NFT: Mets @ Braves - Game 1: deGrom vs. Fried

Optimus-NY : 9/30/2022 5:56 pm
There are some interesting changes to the order today. Alonso is batting second for instance and Canha's hitting cleanup. Buck's got Alvarez hitting 7th and Nido is catching and batting 9th (as he normally would).

The Mets have a 1 game lead, which is enormous right now. Everything they needed to go right for them did on Wednesday regarding their dramatic win against the Marlins, thank to Mr. Escobar, and thanks to the Nats winning in extra innings against the Braves. Here are the scenarios the Mets need to win the division going into the start of this critical series:

-1 win gives the Mets the tiebreaker; so if the Mets then go on and sweep the Nats for the last series of the regular season, they win the division.
-2 wins means only 1 win is needed against the Nats after this series in order to win the N.L. East.
-A three game sweep in Atlanta would win the division.
-If the Mets get swept by the Braves in Atlanta, then they would need help from the Marlins against the Braves in Miami to win the division.

Does he come out for the 7th? I'm guessing he's done, but if he isn't he almost is.

I think he has one more. At least to start the inning

Issue is they want him ready for the last game of the season if necessary

It’s amazing how much trouble they’ve had in ATL. Both stadiums.

Focus On tomorrow, get a win and take the pressure off

Better show up tomorrow. Fried didn’t even have his A game.

This offense has stunk for two months. Absurd
When can we take the kid gloves off deGrom
Snablats : 9/30/2022 9:24 pm : link
This is a huge game, our bullpen sucks, deGrom needed to go another inning. Even an off deGrom is still better than this bullpen

Mets have 3 against the Nationals, and Braves only have 2 at the Marlins. By my count that puts the Braves at 161 games. Am I missing something?

No. They have three at the Marlins. Alcantara is pitching on the last day of the season too.

Should have looked at another site. The one I looked at had 2 games. Weird
megill

is throwing batting practice.
So they don't get a relief pitcher like Iglesias
Snablats : 9/30/2022 9:31 pm : link
At the deadline because they're going to try to change Megill into a reliever, which he's never done ever

Sandy dumbass can't leave this team soon enough. He's been with the Mets for a decade and can't ever build a bullpen

it's bizarre that they've had such an amazing season and yet
Eric on Li : 9/30/2022 9:36 pm : link
the weaknesses we all knew about ahead of the season have pretty much never been solved all year.

weak bottom of the order
thin bp

by no means is the season over because of 1 game but it is a near 2 month trend of the offense not doing what got them to where they are now. they are not working pitchers into high pitch counts. they are not making life difficult.

unless a switch somehow flips on the lineup to not just rely on individual power outbursts from alonso/lindor (and the occasional canha/escobar) it's hard to see this team hitting enough.

where did the team that worked every at bat go?
Come back and get the W tomorrow
moze1021 : 9/30/2022 9:37 pm : link
No big deal yet

Jake looked a lot better except a few mistakes that excellent hitters made him pay for. That'd the main positive to take from this game

Marte being missing is huge.

But maybe they all get going at the right time??
So far it's been a total no show

JDG was fine. The issue continues to be the offense not doing what they did for the first 4 months.

Fried was on 71 pitches in 5ip.
2 days ago Luzardo went through 6 in 95 pitches.
3 days ago Lopez went through 6 in 91.

they just aren't working pitchers the way they were through early August. in fact most of the runs they've scored lately have been from the long ball which is the opposite of the rallies they had earlier in the year where they were stringing together hits (esp 2 out hits).
Bravo Nido!

I hope so. I don't think it's explainable with Marte. Canha and McNeil are both really good top of the order hitters. It's obviously 1 less good hitter but this was a negative trend dating back before he got hit.

if you think about it in the month or two pre-trade deadline they were scuffling offensively, then the first couple weeks post-deadline it looked like they fixed everything, but then the league i guess adjusted to vogey and ruf because those 2 went over a cliff and the offense has been mostly stagnant since.

all year when the DH's hit they win, when they don't they struggle. amazing that what should be such a simple position to solve has been such a problem.
deGrom was not fine giving up three runs in six innings
Snablats : 9/30/2022 9:52 pm : link
When you are looking for over 40 million per year, you need to do better than that in the biggest game of the season

It'll be the same with Max tomorrow if he gives up three runs in six innings. You make this kind of money to be better than a 4.5 ERA in the biggest game of the year
And which team looked ready to play tonight
Snablats : 9/30/2022 9:57 pm : link
In the biggest game of the season, the team with playoff experience or the team without it?

Three outs left to change that
Yes, as amazing as deGrom has been, this game was a letdown
CooperDash : 9/30/2022 10:00 pm : link
for him. The other guy pitched better, plain and simple. If you want to opt out and get the big bucks, then you need to show up when the season is on the line.

that's the downside to bringing a 20 year old up with 1 week left in the season.

weird they are going naquin > vogelbach? and no pinch runner. what are they waiting for with Gore?
regardless of how this ends good job getting 20 pitches on jansen

Fried got into a nice groove after giving up the first run and the Braves simply did what they do best...hit HRs. And the usual shaky closer episode to boot.

All tied up. 5 games to go.

I like the Mets but Go Braves...

under the hood a bit in alvarez first game
Eric on Li : 10/1/2022 10:36 am : link
he made contact 3 times and 1 k.

2nd inning 2 on, none out, 93.5 mph GIDP, but it did have an xba of .400. riley made a good reaction play. if i remember right he swung first pitch.

5th inning, none on, none out, 67 mph ground out. xba .180.

7th inning, man on 2nd, 2 out, 100 mph fly out. it never threatened the outfielder so they were positioned well because it did have an xba of .410, so not quite a can of corn.

9th inning, bases loaded, 1 out, strikeout vs. jansen. that was his worst AB of the game. 3 pitches, lost the bat swinging on strike 3.

overall his average exit velocity in the game was 87mph which isn't notable. it's a pretty similar debut to what we've seen so far from baty/vientos in their first weeks.

after being overly cautious to the border of insanity giving prospects a chance all year it's a little crazy to me that they threw a 20 year old into that spot last night.

i know im a broken record, but even if they didn't call up vientos pre-deadline (which they specifically should have to see what they had before making trades) in august when guillorme/escobar hit the DL and Ruf was doing nothing that was the obvious time to test what they had in both Baty and Vientos instead of the spots they kept wasting on Marrero/Sanchez who never played and had 0 chance of making the postseason roster. the injury obviously impacted things but Alvarez should have come up earlier in september, even if it was just 1 week earlier, when they were facing the last place teams and could have gotten some time as catcher just to get him every day at bats.

they squandered all those chances and instead threw a 20 year old into the biggest game of the year where he faced 4 all star pitchers and unsurprisingly went 0-4, making key outs in 2 rally's with less than 2O. and now i assume he will sit for a week and they will roll some dice to choose which of their RHH rookies to pinch hit against lefties and start against corbin.

they couldn't have managed themselves into a stupider corner then the one they find themselves in now.
100% agree

Buck has had a tough last 3 weeks
larryflower37 : 10/1/2022 12:35 pm : link
In decision making, last night was another example, moving deGrom up, starting the kid, leaving him in to hit with bases loaded, etc.
How is everyone feeling about the way we end the season?
I am not very confident that they will rebound, I do think Max will bring it tonight like he always does.
I think Buck is in his own head and it's translating to the field with how tight this team seems to be playing.
I thought they turned a corner with the come back win against the Marlins but it seems only Escobar is playing loose right now.

I don't pin this all on Buck. The offense was spectacular for half a season then became extremely unreliable post ASG break. That's on everyone. There was no reason to be wound up tight in July.

Management was swelled up with pride at the product they had on the field, and instead of being aggressive (or proactive) they played everything safe and bet on DeGrom, Max, and Diaz to put a coat of paint on any weaknesses.

Vogelbach and Naquin were solid adds, Ruf was an absolute catastrophe, and so was addressing the bullpen. Plenty of us said at the time they needed more help.

They might still pull this out, but if they end up getting the Dodgers, all they're going to see is LHP starters and that is playing right into their weakness and the Dodgers' strength.
The only thing you can fault Buck for
Vanzetti : 10/1/2022 3:22 pm : link
Is going with Megill in a crucial situation.

This loss is really on the players. Jake gave up three HRs and the hitters did nothing. Lindor again coming up small in big game.

You could argue you should have pinch hit Vogy for Alvarez. But I have no problem with him letting the kid hit, especially with the bases loaded. Alvarez drew a lot of walks in the minors and has a good eye.

Vogy should primarily pinch hit when there are two outs because anything on the ground is GIDP. That's what Buck was planning: Vogy for Nido. Unfortunately both Alvarez and Naquin struck out.
im sure they had their reasons but id have gone vogey > naquin
Eric on Li : 10/1/2022 3:54 pm : link
in the last at bat. i had no problem letting alvarez hit there but it did turn out to be a non-competitive at bat. which is what the expectation should be for a 20 year old in his first big league game and first time facing a multiple time all star.

i do still question the wisdom of throwing a 20 year old into that spot when Vientos had been showing postive signs in his last few starts.

their general handling of all the kids this year to me is the most annoying they screwed up because it was 100% in their control to not screw it up. should have called up vientos in july, sent down JDD so they had an insurance option in addition to alvarez. also should have had baty in AAA sooner which may have helped him then adjust to MLB sooner when ready.

remember the braves called their guys up straight from AA in June. who knows where their season goes with that.
what that shows is the Braves had players ready from AA
Snablats : 10/1/2022 4:02 pm : link
while the Mets didnt have any from AA or AAA

So question the farm and why they didnt have anyone ready
when michael harris got called up it took him 50+ abs to homer
Eric on Li : 10/1/2022 4:19 pm : link
in his first 10 games and 38 plate appearances he was hitting .240 with a lower wrc than vientos has now and 9 ks against 1 walk. his wRC was 60 in those first 38 plate appearances.

the braves called their guys up, let them play every day through their early adjustment periods which is the conventional thing to do, and eventually the talent came through. the mets haven't give their guys that chance. vientos is only at 34 plate appearances right now with the 2nd highest walk rate and highest average exit velocity on the team in that small sample.
Eric with the hard facts.
CooperDash : 10/1/2022 5:47 pm : link
