Per Schefter.

He made 'several mistakes.'

No shit.
The NFL would be so much happier if fans

Remained ignorant about the whole head trauma thing.

The funny thing is in this case it seems like very little "nuisance or very little special skills" were required to see a dude smash the back of his head on the ground and then stumble as he is trying to walk away. That to the naked eye screamed concussion. If the naked untrained eye says that dude is knocked out on his feet then he is out. A specialist or trained professional is guy who diagnoses a concussion with someone who isn't showing signs that just anyone can see...

I was eating my egg on a bagel on Thursday

And Con Ed was breaking up the concrete. The guy with the jackhammer took a break and sat near me, so I asked how long he had been jackhammering. 20years.

The guy has got to have CTE or whatever you want to call it. But he is not a multi-million dollar athlete so nobody cares.
That's nice but the NFL had plenty of time to review

and step in before Tua was sent out there on Thursday night.

Where was the urgency?

And it's not as though the issue wasn't out there. Chris Nowinski of the concussion project was very vocal before the game that the NFL needed to act.
My understanding is the independent sideline doc
Matt M. : 10/1/2022 4:21 pm : link
not only does a physical evaluation, following a specific klist, but also employs personal observation of what happened on the field through the player making it into the tent. Even assuming Tua passed the tests (not sure how without assistance), it is that observation that should have been enough to at least keep him from re-entering the game. It should have warranted more observation and testing during the week.

It's hard to say that the prior week contributed to him getting hit. But, it certainly put him at much higher risk for new brain injury. A lot of people and organizations dropped the ball on this.
Even if you take the cynical approach

and believe a league doctor is motivated by $and the financial benefit of stars playing, I find that even off base. There is far more benefit from a name player able to play most of the season and for an extended career, than playing one game with chance of re-injury and career implications.
The NFL walks a really weird line
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/1/2022 4:27 pm : link
Of not fully committing to player safety re: concussions but also not wanting to appear as if they don't want to fully commit to player safety.

This is surely a complicated issue coupled with a yet not fully understood medical topic, but as ever the NFL doesn't really want to do all that much, maybe fearing the liability of admitting something.

the backlash of the court of public opinion is something the nfl takes seriously. Instead of doing the right thing the first time.

No urgency, no doubt.
Question: this physician, using the term generously, was employed by Dolphins or by the NFL, or by the NFL and assigned to the Dolphins or Dolphins' games?

And which entity fired him?

Was NFLPA anywhere in the chain of events, i.e., authority to dismiss him?

Good question and I see now that it was the NFLPA, not the NFL, that exercised the prerogative to terminate the consultant.

My best guess is that the NFL provides the funding to hire, and both sides have option to terminate. Whether NFLPA is involved in initial decision to hire, not sure, and will look for info.

They are going to scapegoat the doctor
larryflower37 : 10/1/2022 6:52 pm : link
Everything is fine we just had one bad doctor.
This is why NFL players always tell each others to go find independent doctors outside of football to give a 2nd opinion. They know the system is flawed and skewed towards the owners and NFL.
On top of this they put him on a plane home after the hospital while he was complaining of headaches.
thanks, shyster and to larryflowers37

comment, well reflects TTH's comment re. the NFL's
schizophrenic, conflicted approach, an existential conflict
Clearly a screwup. That firing was inevitable.
81_Great_Dane : 10/1/2022 10:50 pm : link
But the guy who was fired was the independent doctor, and it's the team doctors who get the final say.

Probably more firings to come.
