Barkley will be here for a while

scrimmage : 10/2/2022 4:53 pm
Whether you like the idea of signing a RB to a second contract or not, this team is bereft of offensive talent. He's the heart and soul of the team this season and looks to be healthy and playing better than ever. This team will have money next year and needs to retain the only star on offense they have. Despite previous injuries and the instability of the runningback position, Barkley is going to be back be it a franchise-tag or a new multi-year contract.

Got to agree

Franchise tag at the least. Possible they could sign him to a 3/4 year contract. Anyone talking about trading him is completely clueless.

It isn't about Mara, at all. It is about Daboll and Schoen.

I've been saying this since last year.
People get so stubborn

I don’t know if he’ll be here awhile. But, people saying just give him away for nothing bc he’s a RB is bullshit.
I'm not so sure

the yo-yo a few threads below says otherwise..
Nobody

knows yet. We need to see what happens the rest of the season. All we can say with reasonable certainty is that Slayton, Sills, Golladay, and Shepard won't be here next year. Jones likely won't be as well. KT might also be gone.

Barkley is a harder case. He's playing great, but plays a position that the NFL devalues, and has had a major knee injury. He might also get injured.

haven’t had a talent at RB like Barkley since Tiki. I’m glad that he’s finally back to where he was, but runs with more maturity and looks to take on defenders instead of avoid them. As a fan, I want him to stay on the Giants, and I think the Giants will lean towards resigning him, but I’d also understand if they move on. Next week is going to be very rough if both Jones and Taylor are out.
In a few more weeks he might be the only NYG not on the

Injury list.

Trade him before that happens?

Barkley is easy

if you can't work out a contract you tag him.
Ive said it for a long time
Aaroninma : 10/2/2022 5:15 pm : link
Its almost a 100% lock that he gets a deal here. He is an absolute star and the best player on the team by a mile

It's great watching Barkley run with such confidence, but the practical issues w/r/t whether we keep him around have not resolved themselves.

If they don't let him walk in free agency, they can either franchise him $12.7 million guaranteed, or keep him for a much lower 2023 cap hit (but still significant guaranteed money) in a long-term deal.

The problem with the latter option is that four consecutive games of Barkley not getting hurt does not allay concerns about his tendency to get hurt. Add to that, he'll be 26 when next season starts, and nothing about his talent level at age 26 suggests that he'll definitely defy the odds which make the case that RBs don't usually have long, productive careers.

I think the mistake being made here is that because Barkley is so clearly the team's best offensive weapon, we need to pay him like that without regard to the possibility that next year's team will feature significant upgrades at WR. What if this team actually had a WR who could be counted on to get open and catch the ball? What if there was anything like a legitimate debate as to who the best player on the offense was? Suddenly $12.7 million seems a bit steep for a RB.
He looks fresh and running more nfl style now
Payasdaddy : 10/2/2022 5:36 pm : link
I can see him performing well for another 3-4 yrs
We have nothing on offense
God forbid a couple playmakers and it can really open stuff up
A long term contract
Mook80 : 10/2/2022 5:38 pm : link
would be monumentally stupid.

If he continues playing well all year, put the franchise tag on him.

If he does the same next year, franchise him again, and then let him walk.

If he doesn't like the franchise tag, too fucking bad.

I am all for giving him the franchise tag this off-season. RB tag number is only $9 million, which would only be 2 million more than what his cap number is this season.
If he keeps on carrying it 31 times

I'm not sure how much longer he'll be here.
