That’s an Offensive Design I Hope and Believe …

christian : 10/2/2022 6:48 pm
They can maintain (assuming Jones is OK).

I’ll be interested to see when the numbers come out:

1) How many fewer snaps under pressure Jones took
2) How many read and RPO snaps Jones took

I’ve posted this before, I was never excited about the prospect of dink and dunk, and play for space. With a bad pass protecting offensive line, play action and getting out of the pocket is they key in my view.

And if Barkley can continue to pick up meaningful yards on most carries, they can replicate this approach as a base offense.

The WR talent is just not there, nor is the pass pro. If the Giants offense has a chance to be average (which is a big goal), it’s on the legs of Jones and Barkley.

Game ball to Kafka today. Great looking game plan.
Both teams wanted to run

The giants got it done and that’s great - glad they stayed with the run and didn’t get too cute
It was mentioned at the half that they asked

Daboll what was the offensive plan for the second half and he said run the balll. Apparently they knew they could keep doing it so they did

As long as they aren’t in a down and distance hole, running the football has to be respected. I’m also glad they didn’t get cute.
When you’re playing a team with no offense

This scheme works. But counting on winning games scoring 20 is not going to work against even average offenses. Our WR aren’t just bad they’re an asset for the other team. It’s frustrating.

I agree, this isn’t an offense you’d design going into a season. But given the injury and performance circumstances, I think this is a design that gets the most points on the board possible.
I dont see how they can keep doing this

When Jones gets gets hurt.
Agree the OP

It can be argued persuasively, I think, that not one Giants WR starts or maybe even sees the field on any other NFL team

In seeing how this game plan would work with a healthy Toney and Wan’dale playing.

Game plan will be different every week, Depending on the opponent.

Green Bay’s defense has holes also
Is it me?

But I see a lot of dink and dunk across the NFL this year. It doesn’t seem like check down throws either.

I could be completely wrong. Maybe it’s just the games I have watched

I think a lot of team do combat pass rush with short passes, but I don’t think that’s Jones’s strength. I think he’s better when he breaks the pocket and can see what’s developing. I never bought the idea Jones was going to be a guy who could quickly make the right read and it get it out fast.
I think our QBs need to learn to throw the ball away

sometimes. Commendable for the effort plays but throw the ball at someone's feet every now and then and live for another play.

What's the old saying about dogs chasing cars...

Teams are using the short passing game in lieu of running game for a number of reasons. First, OL talent is woefully thin across the NFL especially when injuries hit. Second, the less an OL needs to be engaged the less chance you have of getting called for holding, hands to the face, etc. Third, if you have fewer DT's/ILB's crashing the center of the OL trying to stop the run you can give your QB more time in the pocket. Tom Brady, who knows a thing or two about facing pass rushers, has said that his biggest threat is not the blind side but rather rushers immediately up the gut in his face forcing him to move off his spot. If you can force defenses to have to get pressure with guys off the edge, that is a lot longer distance to travel then when coming in a straight line.

In addition to the foregoing, the short passing game also neutralizes the pass rush because there is just not enough time to get to the QB and/or change the trajectory of the throw.
