This is good news in my opinion
GiantBlue : 10/3/2022 8:08 am : link
Two weeks ago, they bring in Jaylon Smith and he played pretty effectively yesterday in Wink's scheme.

If Wink sees that kind of impact by possibly bringing in Landon, then I say trust the Wink!

But with a 3-1 record and a winnable game vs. GB next Sunday in London, it seems like the team has a jump in their step not to mention the coaching staff and GM!

Let's see where this takes us.
I don’t see Collins as a replacement for Love. Different skill set.
Ivan15 : 10/3/2022 8:09 am : link
Collins’ game is more like Peppers’ game. That being said, if Collins can play like he did during his second (or was it third?) year, that might be worthwhile in a positionless defense.

LANDON CALLING 2.0?
Talk about timing: #Giants will welcome old friend Landon Collins for a visit today, source confirms, as @JFowlerESPN reported.
I’m told Collins’ visit was already scheduled before rash of injuries hit NYG yesterday. Intriguing fit in Wink’s defense as S/LB.
Never bought the Collins at LB thing
BillT : 10/3/2022 8:12 am : link
Even our smallest LB are 6’3” 235/240. Collins is what, 6’ 220. He isn’t needed on the outside and can’t play inside. He can’t cover so just what does he do. If Wink has a plan so be it but I don’t see what he brings.

1. He is slow. He is not manning up on anyone.
2. Where does he play? He's not a deep safety.
3. If you think putting him at LB is the answer, remember that multiple DCs have tried this with him and he was dead set against it.

It doesn't hurt to bring him in, give him a look, and talk with him. We know Wink would have a plan for him. So, we'll see where this ends up.

When he has been placed in that LB role he has been successful at it…in NY as well DC. Heck the other ex-Giant turned WTF player alos turned out to be a decent Oline when he switched positions. For as bad as Flowers was at LT, it baffled me that they didn’t put him in at Guard which he proved to be a decent starter.

As it relates to Landon, the bigger question is whether we can afford him.

The Giants approached him about LB. He was dead set against it. Flowers was their baby that they risked their careers over. Instead of admitting a mistake, they just kept saying he was the answer.
One thing Collins can do is tackle......
Simms11 : 10/3/2022 8:46 am : link
IIRC he was a pretty darn good tackler and seemed to play well in the box, exception being 2016, where he had like 6 INTs that year?!
As Eric said, teams do this every week but
Shecky : 10/3/2022 8:49 am : link
A huge difference I notice this year vs years past. This year they seem to bring in more veteran guys. Guys who have starting and playing experience. Where as in years past the guys they would bring in each week were UDFA who didnt make other teams.

Personally, I like this approach better. But the "names" stand out much greater this year, such as a Collins, then them bringing in no names of years past.

BigBlueShock : 10/3/2022 8:53 am : link
Collins is at a different place in his career now. He’s a FA that hasn’t been signed after 4 weeks into a season. He’d probably play nose tackle at this point if he needed too. Him not wanting to play linebacker several years ago is irrelevant now
Can he play QB?

The way it was worded
nygiants16 : 10/3/2022 8:56 am : link
makes it sound like he is visiting with intent to sign over him coming in for a workout..

Maybe Jefferson is hurt? seems like he would step into that in the box role and Belton goes to the 2nd safety next to mckinney if Love is out..
I trust these coaches know. What and how to use these players.
George from PA : 10/3/2022 8:59 am : link
Is there any players currently playing worse this year?

They are doing what the previous coaches said they would do.....putting players in successful roles

I 100% agree with that. All I was getting at is if his heart isn't in it then it doesn't matter where he is.

Wink Martindale: "If you have a slow MIKE, you have a slow defense."

Giants were in talks with Landon Collins before yesterday, and he'll visit today. They see a fit in the box, always Collins' strength.
But Landon has always fought notion of being a LB. Does that matter now?

The replacement for Love is Belton, plus Jefferson in 3-safety sets.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/3/2022 9:49 am : link
I don't know what they might have in mind for Landon Collins. The visit could just be diligence on available street talent, as Eric suggests. In any case, Collins lacks the coverage skills to replace Love. As a backup for Crowder, or extra safety depth, he might be an upgrade.
First we brought back Davis Webb ...
FStubbs : 10/3/2022 9:49 am : link
... now we're talking Landon Collins (who seems like he might actually be a good fit).

Dare we discuss bringing back a certain WR in a few weeks to help out that sorry unit?

He saw the mess in the NYG organization circa 2019? Wise man!

That said, the money he got from Washington was kind of nuts.

He is a good blitzer - most running backs cant handle him.

But I agree with your point, he is one-dimensional - which explains why he is available to sign.
Kinda doubt Collins is 220 at this point in his career.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/3/2022 10:25 am : link
In college the joke was he was 1 biscuit away from being a LB.
Seems like there is really not a place for him to play
nygiants16 : 10/3/2022 10:26 am : link
safeties are love or belton and mckinney with Crowder and Msith or mcfadden in base..

big Nickel is Love, Belton and mckinney woth crowder and smith at LB

Nickel is love, Belton and mckinney with crowder and Holmes in slot

dime brings in a 4th safety usually, maybe thats where they see him?
Replaces Jabril Peppers
Samiam : 10/3/2022 10:28 am : link
Could be 100% wrong on this but I thought the Giants would have liked to have Peppers back but couldn’t afford him. I thought he could be valuable in Wink’s defense. I think Collins is not as good as Peppers but could serve in a similar way especially blitzing and if he’s affordable, why not?
Wink wants a sledgehammer in a hybrid LB role to stop screen passes
MartyNJ1969 : 10/3/2022 10:35 am : link
The one thing Collins does well is defend the screen pass.
Put him in LB
Festina Lente : 10/3/2022 10:36 am : link
He'll be better than anything we have. I'm all for it
Giants were interested before injuries on Sunday
Breeze_94 : 10/3/2022 10:43 am : link
So this isn’t bad news for Love.

Also, there’s no way they are viewing him as a safety. He’ll be in the box. Although this defense is position-less and 2nd and 3rd & long.

I haven’t watched Collins play in a couple years but I’m assuming he’s still a better athlete and player than any of the “LBs” they have at the moment.
Collins is not as good as Peppers?
Greg from LI : 10/3/2022 10:47 am : link
😂

The legend of Jabrill Peppers just won't go away around here, huh? The guy couldn't cover for shit and he was a lousy tackler. Collins at least wraps up.
Collins was a 3x Pro Bowler here
Anakim : 10/3/2022 10:57 am : link
He wasn't good against the pass, but he was better than Peppers at pretty much everything else.
Peppers was Dollar General Collins.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/3/2022 11:11 am : link
And played exactly thus.
Peppers vs Collins
Samiam : 10/3/2022 11:15 am : link
So Peppers is playing for Belichick and Collins is trying out for the Giants who have no money to spend. Does that mean anything about what each guy can do now?

Peppers is playing for no money, so does that say something too?

Details on the Jabrill Peppers deal:
* 1 year, $2M
* $300K signing bonus
* $225K workout bonus
* $1.05M base fully guaranteed
* $25k per-game roster bonus
* Up to $3M in playing-time incentives

With $1.35M total fully guaranteed

That would be my guess, as long as he doesn't have to cover anybody downfield... Maybe Wink can make use of Collins in the hybrid role.

Peppers is getting minimal playing time for the Pats, limited snaps. More time on special teams. I watched most of the Pats/Packers late game yesterday. BB apparently doesn't trust Peppers either, I wasn't sorry to see him go.
Peppers is a backup in a weak defense on a 1-3 team

He's less than a year removed from a ruptured ACL (with a high ankle sprain thrown in for good measure). That probably has more to do with his playing time at this point.
Peppers had moments
nygiants16 : 10/3/2022 11:32 am : link
but he got burned a lot, he was fine going straight ahead and staying in the box but he wasnt some star..

Collins was a difference maker on a playoff team, is collins the best in coverage? absolutely not but he was elite in his role in the box
No
AcidTest : 10/3/2022 11:39 am : link
harm in taking a look. As Eric said, teams bring in players every week, and his visit was apparently scheduled before all of our injuries yesterday. I expect that at least one player injured yesterday will go on IR.
Bottom line
Greg from LI : 10/3/2022 11:42 am : link
Peppers is a tremendous athlete but a bad football player. That athletic ability occasionally allowed him to make flashy plays, but on a consistent basis over many plays, he was not good. Bad in coverage, terrible tackler. He was pretty good on the blitz and could hit, that's about it.
No doubt that NFL teams work out players
Dnew15 : 10/3/2022 12:05 pm : link
on the regular.

BUT this feels different after watching Sunday's game.

The Giants are going to struggle to find players period to fill out the roster at certain positions IF the majority of injuries from Sunday keep players out of the lineup for London or moving forward.

This Giants team, like everyone other one for the past decade seems to be snake bit from injury stand point.
Collins Was Never As Good
Bernie : 10/3/2022 12:23 pm : link
As his reputation. 1 big season of ints that he could never repeat. He couldn’t cover TE’s 5 yrs ago, he won’t be able to cover them now. Pass.
Jefferson wasn't inactive
WillieYoung : 10/3/2022 12:50 pm : link
He's on the practice squad and didn't get one of the two call ups. He has already been activated at least twice and can only be activated three times without being elevated to active roster.
No one could sniff out a screen like Collins
Vanzetti : 10/3/2022 12:58 pm : link
You couldn't run one against him because he always managed to shoot between the OL before they got in position.

OTOH, because he was always looking into the backfield, he got burned on some deep routes.

But I think Wink will know how to use him. Its amazing how he plays to a guy's strength.
No thanks

Just don't have him walk across the MetLife turf to sign the deal :)
His last year in WFT
Now Mike in MD : 10/3/2022 4:20 pm : link
he shifted to LB and pparently played well in that role, although it is difficult to tell how accurate that is because the WFT media is so sychophantic.

But considering he played LB, I would guess the Giants brought him in with the ide of him playing LB and not safety.
