How bad have the Giants WR's been through their history

NY-Fan : 10/3/2022 6:24 pm
Sterling Shepard is probably going to finish his Giants career 8th in receptions all-time with 362 and he only played in 75 games and only 2 full 16 game seasons.

Also Jones is already 7th in total yards and has the highest comp% by far at 62.9%. Looking at Jones stats you would think that if you can get to a Super Bowl with Manning, Simms, Hostetler & Collins after looking at their numbers you should be able to get there with Jones. That is another debate though.

Barkley currently is 9th in rushing yards all-time.

Giants have never really been an offensive juggernaut but hopefully with this staff some of that will change.

Never is a long time. How long have they played 16-17 game seasons?

How long did they play only 12-14 game seasons? Receiving yards per game may be a better gauge. Your list may be very different.
For most of the giants history…

It was a league that was run first and pass when you need to.

This is also why LTs accomplishments were so amazing. The number of sacks from a linebacker position during a running era and when he also dropped back into coverage.

The Giants have been snakebit @ the position; Nicks & Odell had Canton level talent IMO. VC didn't have HOF talent, but he was a damn good receiver.

we had a damn good WR corps, transitioning from Plax+Toomer+S. Smith (throw in Tyree for good measure) to Nicks+Cruz+Manningham. It was one of the strengths of the team. So in other words, they haven't always been bad even in semi-recent times.
It's seriously

Our most pitiful position over the years. Prior to Cruz's and OBJ's Pro Bowl selections in '12, '14, '15, and '16, our last Pro Bowler at the position was Homer Jones in '68! That's almost 45 effing years!

Though I agree with a position above, it's a different game now. And having all these young, offensive coaches and front office crew might change things on that front for us. That's the hope, at least.
Phil Simms Career

He was with the Giants from 1979 to around 1993. During this entire time, he never had a really good WR. He had some decent WRs but nobody that would worry defensive coordinators. His best receiver was Mark Bavarro but he was a TE and only played about 5 years but missed time because of a knee injury. After a few years, the Giants developed a very good running attack and Simms became a game manager so the lack of big time WRs was not a problem.

To the point of this thread, at some points afterwards, the Giants drafted or signed some very good WRs but it was not always the case.

They sucked all but for a few short years of my life. I was born on the 80s and first legit receiver we had was Toomer. I didn't think much of Ike. We started turning that around when we got Burress and then drafted/acquired good receiver after good receiver. Only for every single one to get injured shortly after. Smith, Nicks, Cruz, and Manningham to a lesser degree. Even OBJ was hurt frequently before he forced himself off the team. It won't take much to rank high on our all time receiving stats, but we've been unlucky in finding a talented wr that can stay healthy.

Sadly, the same can be said for tight end. No offense to Howard Cross, he was a warrior and great blocker, but in nearly 40 years only 2 players are worth talking about

The WRs were good in those years, and OBJ was great before his injuries.

But there's been a lot of dogshit years. Simms' best target over his 15 year career was Bavaro. Not his WRs. Imagine how good his numbers might have been with Nicks+Cruz+Manningham.
Never is not a good word to use for things like this.

The GIANTS had a VERY productive offense with Y.A. Tittle at QB.

And they have had some really excellent WRs through the years including Del Shofner, R.C. Owens at the end of his career, Homer Jones, Amani Toomer, Hakeem Nicks, Plaxico Burress, Steve Smith, and OBJ to name a few.

And then there was this Gifford guy who was THE MOST versatile player in the history of the game, and he played some WR late in his career.
overall true but for one decade

Giants had very good receivers in coughlin era. Burress, Toomer, Nicks, Cruz, Beckham, Manningham, Steve Smith very good.

They have certainly lacked players with longevity and all pro. But they have had peak WR seasons that were very good during a decade. Eli being a part of that obviously ;)

They were dismal in the 70s obviously. 80s and 90s were not anything great but better, steadly better under Fassel and then coughlin. They have also been dismal as a team since then so there is that.

NYG is lucky they will improve leaps and bounds in this department just through attrition next year. A draft or two targeting WR will have them much better at this position over next five to seven years.
yes and shofner and jones count too

during the 56-68 era as well.
Simms had reliable receivers.......

Maybe not all-pro, but definitely lunch pail type of guys; Bobby Johnson, Phil McConkey, Stephen Baker, Lionel Manuel, Mark Ingram, to name a few. They got the job done and we’re a significant part of those teams. Those days were more of ball-control offense anyway. Run the ball, and stop the run. The issue is WRs are really the offense these days and so you really need decent WRs.
On the other hand, Ron Johnson was their first

1000-yard rusher. They were, traditionally, more of a passing team than a 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust team. They had Conerly and Tittle and Tarkenton.

And they traded their star WR Homer Jones to get Ron Johnson. Jones was a legitimate star wideout.
2011 was the best WR trio

In franchise history. Injuries destroyed the careers of Nicks and Cruz, who looked like would be a dominant duo for years to come.

Not even close to all-pro. Agree they often got the job done but it always was annoying to see what the Redskins were putting out on the field in terms of WRs versus what Simms had to work with.

He did have Bavaro of course.
