NFT: Nats @ Mets - Game 1: Carrasco

Optimus-NY : 10/3/2022 6:33 pm
Well, this is rather anticlimactic. The Mets' chances to win the division are down to 3%, according to PlayoffStatus.com. The Braves have a mafic number of 1. Any combination of a single Mets loss and a Braves win sews up the NL East for Atlanta. Quite frankly from both perspectives: the sooner, the better. The Braves are in Miami tonight against the Marlins and are ready to finish this division up. The Mets are back in Flushing hosting the worst team in MLB for a three-game set---the same team that beat them two out of three games at Citi Field about a month ago after that huge Dodgers series.

In any case, the Mets are gonna play tonight normally, but the reality of the situation is that it's time to focus on the WC round starting on Friday. It'll be a best of three from Citi Field for all of the games necessary needed (two or three) before the NLDS. AS the #4 seed, the Mets will play the #5 seed---either the Padres or the Phillies. According to PlyoffStatus.com, the odds are that it'll be the Padres (85%) rather than the Phillies (15%). Walker is pitching tomorrow, and deGrom will be bypassed on Wednesday---assuming the division is clinched today or tomorrow by the Braves--and the regular season finale will be a bullpen committee game. In any case, Vogelbach is DHing against the righty and Nido is catching. We'll probably see Alvarez this series catching at some point, but let's wait and see. Hopefully Marte continues to improve. I have a feeling he won't be available for the WC round either (he was hit in Pittsburgh on September 6th). Let's see what happens. Lineup and Starting pitchers are below. At least the game is back on SNY today...

I’m trying to regain some level of confidence.

The bright side is that there will be playoff baseball at Citifield this Friday night. We know that for a fact. Beyond that, if we should be so lucky, we get the Dodgers who we actually played pretty well this season. It would be silly to look beyond that at this point but if we do happen to face the Braves again at least it would mean we made the NLCS and playing great hall again.
Here are more links to the Braves-Marlins game from Miami tonight:

Except McNeil, let him chase his batting title.

But sitting some key guys will be like a subtle jab that 'you guys failed' (including the manager!), it's down to the Wild Card for us. Just rest them because it's going to be a long slog for us to advance down the line. I bet we even win more games with the backups.

Really disappointing, as bad as the Rangers collapse last postseason...
Agree it would be best for ATL to win tonight and wrap it up

and deserve the division. Obviously disappointing for us fans with Mets likely winning 100 games and only a wildcard to show for it. A silver lining though is the Mets have played the Dodgers tough this season and NLDS “only” requires us beating the Dodgers 3 times instead of 4 in NLCS. Plus when they’re right, we have the top 2 pitchers in the postseason on our side.
Marlins are up 2-0 in the Bottom of the 1st.

Muchas gracias, Optimus!

The concerning thing is, the Braves are the defending champs, and they still wanted it more than us! How depressing is that? After their slight WS hangover, they hunkered down and got to business. While we peaked too early. Buck seriously needs to adjust that next season.

De nada. It's all about the banter at the end of the day. We have a nice lil community here :-) I hope the Braves wins tonight and end this thing (sounds weird, doesn't it? lol). There's gonna be a rain delay for the game tonight. O hope they just cancel it and have a double header tomorrow and the Braves take care of business tonight in Miami and officially end this charade. The Mets have a three percent chance of winning the division. I'd rather it be zero by the end of tonight so that things are legitimately over and done with and definitive planning can be made for the last two days as well as the post-season roster.

Was going to start a separate thread but this might work. I mentioned in another losing Marte was huge. Beginning to think that if he doesn’t get hurt, they don’t lose to the bad teams the way they have been in September; still can’t believe they lost 3 to the Cubs at home. If Marte doesn’t get hurt, anybody think they go into the Atlanta series with a 3 game lead, maybe 4? Or am I just blowing smoke up my rear end?
My God, wouldn't it be something if the Braves lost their series

Who knows? I think they fibbed about the finger injury the whole time. We may not see Marte at all for the rest of the year. Best case scenario is we see him in the NLDS. We're not seeing him for this series against the Nats or the WC round/best of three series starting on Friday.

His loss was no doubt big. But not sure how much help he would have been. The one cubs game was 6-0 after 1 innings, when Cookie completely sucked. I'd hate to think this offense was so co-dependent on one guy, but he was definitely missed.

Oh, well. They made their bed, now they have to lie in it...

Good for him. I've been riding him all season, glad to see he finally got hot. As much as we want to cry about the cubs sweep and being 2-6 vs CHI, MIA and WAS in september, the fact is we don't win a few september games without him. So I guess it washes out in the end (not completely, but partially).

Not many stranger things have happened, lol. The Mets are gonna play it normally tonight--if they play. That's why I hope the Braves just end the thing so the Mets can officially move on. It would be weird to get Wednesday with hope for the division still and deGrom available. They still wouldn't pitch him in that scenario though I don't think.

While I would love it, at this point I'd rather it be over, so they can sit some guys, keep the ideal rotation, etc.

It would be the worst of both worlds for them to still be in it Wednesday and have to play hard and win the game, only to see ATL win and clinch anyway.

The interesting scenario os this: What if the Mets win both games tomorrow and the Marlins win tonight (like they are now) and tomorrow? The Mets have deGrom scheduled to pitch on Wednesday in that scenario on 5 days rest. They'd still need the Braves to get swept by the Fish in Miami though. I STILL don't think the Mets would throw deGrom in that scenario and would opt for a bullpen game. It would be too big of a risk because they'd need him for Friday or Saturday.

Not stupid at all! I feel the same exact way, I'm just bottling it up. I would play tomorrow's doubleheader normally if that hope still exists. The issue would be Wednesday if the Mets are still alive for the division. Can't throw Jake under those circumstances, but the Mets could still easily win a bullpen game and hope for the best. Too bad Alcantara was shut down by the Marlenes a few days ago, despite Mattingly saying that wouldn't happen only days before that. Alcantara was scheduled to pitch on Wednesday. Now THAT would have been dramatic!

The only circumstances that would have existed for me to pitch deGrom on Wednesday would have been if the Mets had their complete destiny in their own hands. They don't, even if the Mets get to Wednesday with a chance still. That's why those blown games to to the Cubs and Nats last month hurt so much. The Mets blew the division more than the Braves won it.

Yeah, MIA is a bunch of pussies for doing that.

Instead of a pen game, I would start Peterson or McGill and them throw as much as they can. I know they have been "training" to be a pen guy, but they both have sucked in that role so far - not surprising given they have been starters most of their career - so I say let them start and see how far they get.

But again, this is all pipe dream stuff.

I wouldn't put it past ATL to rally and win this game, LOL...

I STILL don't think the Mets would throw deGrom in that scenario and would opt for a bullpen game. It would be too big of a risk because they'd need him for Friday or Saturday.

Agree. If winning the game meant winning the division I'd say start him, but since ATL can clinch simply by winning, might as well save him for WC game 1.

Yep. Nevermind he CHI/WAS/MIA thing - if they had simply won ONE FUCKING GAME this weekend, they would still have controlled their own destiny.

But alas, they didn't, so here we are.

GRRRRRRR....
Marlins are hitting now in the Bottom of the 6th in Miami.

Marlins are winning 4-0 still. Result to come in roughly an hour, pending something odd. Let's watch that one and keep hope alive somehow, as little of it that there still is, lol!

Marlins stream for Braves at Marlins tonight - ( New Window )
Got this offa the Marlins' telecast:

re: the Mets' chances to still win the division. Believe me, it's still in my head, but I'm just tempering my expectations.....by a LOT, lol. Optimus, I understand, and you're right. I was stupid to eeven mention the possibility of that happening. A pipe dream. I would delete my post if I could.

Peterson pitched on Saturday for an inning or two I think, but he could still pitch on Wednesday in that scenario. I think we see him either way. Megill is a guy I don't trsut at all at this point though. Funnily enough, Drew Smith has picked it up lately, especially against the Marlins on Wednesday at Citi in that dramatic Escobar comeback game in extras.

He threw 2/3 of an inning Saturday, so he should be good to throw a decent amount of pitches on Wednesday.

But again, we are getting waaaaaaaaay ahead of ourselves.

Personally, I think ATL is throwing this game just to fuck with the Mets, haha...

Thanks about Peterson. I'm already starting to put the series ut of my mind. It would be in the Mets' and Braves' best interests for the division race to end ASAP---tonight. Watch it go until Wednesday and the Fish not have Alcantara on the mound since he was shut down for the season already. What an embarrassment of a franchise the Marlins are.
Optimus ans speedy, you guys are such good guys.

I mean it from my heart.

Still 4-0 Marlins

8th inning.
Let’s see hypothetically the marlins sweep the braves
Metnut : 10/3/2022 9:08 pm : link
and the Mets are only able to get one game in on Wednesday after a rain out tomorrow (which they win). In that scenario, would you risk starting Degrom and Scherzer vs the Nats with a chance to win the division after a sweep (knowing you’d be completely fucked for the best of 3 if it didn’t work out)?
