NFT: Nats @ Mets - Game 1: Carrasco

Optimus-NY : 10/3/2022 6:33 pm
Well, this is rather anticlimactic. The Mets' chances to win the division are down to 3%, according to PlayoffStatus.com. The Braves have a mafic number of 1. Any combination of a single Mets loss and a Braves win sews up the NL East for Atlanta. Quite frankly from both perspectives: the sooner, the better. The Braves are in Miami tonight against the Marlins and are ready to finish this division up. The Mets are back in Flushing hosting the worst team in MLB for a three-game set---the same team that beat them two out of three games at Citi Field about a month ago after that huge Dodgers series.

In any case, the Mets are gonna play tonight normally, but the reality of the situation is that it's time to focus on the WC round starting on Friday. It'll be a best of three from Citi Field for all of the games necessary needed (two or three) before the NLDS. AS the #4 seed, the Mets will play the #5 seed---either the Padres or the Phillies. According to PlyoffStatus.com, the odds are that it'll be the Padres (85%) rather than the Phillies (15%). Walker is pitching tomorrow, and deGrom will be bypassed on Wednesday---assuming the division is clinched today or tomorrow by the Braves--and the regular season finale will be a bullpen committee game. In any case, Vogelbach is DHing against the righty and Nido is catching. We'll probably see Alvarez this series catching at some point, but let's wait and see. Hopefully Marte continues to improve. I have a feeling he won't be available for the WC round either (he was hit in Pittsburgh on September 6th). Let's see what happens. Lineup and Starting pitchers are below. At least the game is back on SNY today...

Starting Lineups and Pitchers - 10.3.22 - Nats @ Mets - 7:10 pm EST start from Citi Field

and the Mets are only able to get one game in on Wednesday after a rain out tomorrow (which they win). In that scenario, would you risk starting Degrom and Scherzer vs the Nats with a chance to win the division after a sweep (knowing you’d be completely fucked for the best of 3 if it didn’t work out)?

This would be during a hypothetical doubleheader on Thursday

No problem Dennis. Thank you for the kind words (my ex-wife wouldn't agree though, lol)! Glad to have made your acquaintance online here as well :-) We'll all continue to have our threads and banter back and forth after the season is over either way. Glad you've had a good time.
The Braves will probably win tomorrow

And as the weather would have it, sweeping a doubleheader always seems harder than winning one game each day.

That said, it would be fun entering the final day with hope. I’d pitch the bullpen game regardless. We already tried to line up our aces perfectly in the name of winning the division and it backfired.

No way. Too risky. That is uber-dangerous territory there. I'm already concerned with Darvish beating the Mets here like he did earlier this season---with ease I might add for those who may have forgotten what happened right after the All-Star Break.

Final Score from Miami - Marlins 4, Braves 0

Tomorrow you've got lefthander Braxton Garrett pitching for the Fish in Miami (3-6, 3.56 ERA, 83 SO). I'm not sure who's pitching for the Braves though. It says TBD on their website.

Marlin won. Well. The plot thickens. Maybe?
The Braves will win tomorrow and close the door

I am 99% certain.

I also can’t open myself up to the possibility that the Braves would ever get swept but the Mets would not sweep the Nats and hold up their end.

Barfs were hung over today after this past weekend. Tomorrow is gonna be interesting, to say the least. It's questionable if the Mets will get both games in tomorrow due to the rain.

I think you're right. I think the Braves had the inevitable let down after their series with us. I expect that they will win tomorrow, and put us out of our misey😁.
Another analysis of what happened.

"Not winning NL East over Braves is a massive failure, but it's also something Mets can overcome"
All that matters now for Mets is the playoffs, where hope is far from lost - ( New Window )
Whoever started vs Braves tonight for Miami
