The Interesting, Random Story of Giant Vince Dennery

christian : 10/4/2022 7:55 am
Skimming the stats for past WRs, I filtered by highest YPC and saw Dennery at 65 YPC. He had 1 career catch for 65 yards and a TD in 1941. The year the Giants lost to the Bears in the championship game, led by future HOFs Tuffy Leemans and Mel Hein.

Thanks to the power of the internet: Dennery was a standout from Jersey City who went to Fordham. His career was cut short when WW2 broke out. He ended up in the navy and hurt his wrist landing in Okinawa, and couldn’t play football again.

I love these old stories, and I’m always amazed at how WW2 forced all walks of life onto the battle field to serve. And you end up with a bunch of pro athletes with incomplete careers because of the war.

little more than incomplete careers for many. Two members of the Giants Ring of Honor lost their life. Al Blozis and Jack Lummus. Jack Lummus was a Medal of Honor Winner. Al Blozis also had his number retired.

You can spend a very long time studying WW2 and the impact it had on lives and sacrifices made. It's called the Greatest Generation for a reason.

Lummus played in the game you referenced and it was also the last game he ever played. I don't think Blozis was on the Giants at that time.

It also help shape future great HC's (who had served) started football trees still evident today. The military and football have a very close relationship when you look close enough.
