Cole Beasley watch

Eric on Li : 10/4/2022 11:40 am
currently on the tampa practice squad Beasley has just 1 remaining elevation before he and the bucs have a decision to make.

this week they got mike evans and chris godwin and they dominated targets as you would expect. russell gage also played and out targeted beasley 4 to 1 despite being listed as doubtful.

julio jones was active but didn't see a target while breshad perriman was inactive due to injury and scotty miller was a healthy inactive. jaelan darden was also active at Wr but he's their return guy.

add that all up and while they may delay his final elevation beyond this week, there is probably a decision coming for the bucs and beasley in terms of whether or not to give him an roster spot. presumably it would come at the expense of 1 of their 7 current active spots - scotty miller being the most likely.

if beasley gets his last elevation this week and nobody else gets hurt enough to open up a roster spot for him, it's possible next week he's at a point where he needs to choose between remaining on a practice squad without any elevations and waiting for an injury to occur or taking an active roster spot and getting a bunch of targets right away (which no doubt the nyg already offered, and he instead chose the TB PS - but will that change if they don't active roster him?). it may be that the giants have held off on bringing in any other veterans until they see how his situation resolves since he's obviously got familiarity with the system (he was the 2nd leading target catching 82 balls each of the prior 2 years in buf).
Sign me up for Cole…

He is a professional. Brady had a lot of good things to say about him too. he could step in and immediately be our slot WR getting open to move the chains
relative
Ron Johnson : 10/4/2022 11:45 am : link
to what we have it'll feel like we added Tyreek Hill.
i'd take him

he'd bust his ass and would set a good example
A win this week
Vanzetti : 10/4/2022 11:47 am : link
Would go along way to changing the way people view the Giants. Right now they are perceived as a losing organization and guys looking for one final exciting playoffs and possible championship are not even going to consider them

Beating Green Bay would help change that perception. As would being four and one
what is the time frame for bucs to elevate him
upstatenyg : 10/4/2022 11:51 am : link
or the Giants can sign him?

If you had a choice between
Gman11 : 10/4/2022 11:52 am : link
catching passes from whoever the Giants trot out there and Tom Brady what would you pick?
Especially now that Shep is out
adamg : 10/4/2022 11:57 am : link
makes too good a fit for need and position.

He might not have a choice pretty soon.
Highly doubtful
BigBlueShock : 10/4/2022 11:57 am : link
He already had his chance (multiple chances if you believe reports the Giants were persistent) to come here. He chose not to. And this was before Tampa came calling. Beasley will have choices and I’m not sure why the Giants would now suddenly be more attractive to him with the current QB situation
Even at his best, Beasley was a complementary player.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/4/2022 11:58 am : link
The Cowboys knew it, so they went out and got Cooper. The Bills knew it, so they went out and got Diggs. Who would Cole Beasley complement here? Who would open up the underneath stuff for him by attracting double coverage and stretching the field? Richie James? David Sills? Darius Slayton?

It is only an option if the Bucs don't elevate him from practice squad, if he stays there, I believe other teams can sign him.

I think the question of whether he would stay as a PS player or sign as a starter with the G Men, he would come to NY.

If bucs are elevating him obviously he would stay there.

I may be wrong, but if the Giants want to sign him off the practice squad he can refuse to sign and stay on the Bucs practice squad.
I think the NFL rules state
upstatenyg : 10/4/2022 12:02 pm : link
that if you are signing from another practice squad, directly to the 53 man roster, the player has to sign unless being elevated by current team or if they are playing each other. If neither happens, i believe he would have to come.
Gman11: You’re right that PS players are free agents.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/4/2022 12:04 pm : link
They are not obligated to accept an offer. I think Adam just meant that Beasley is running out of elevations in Tampa.
The problem here is Cole is an established vet and he may

not want to come here for a variety of reasons. If his heart isn't into being in NY, do you really want him here?

Yep. Would be interesting if he still didn't want to come here though. Wouldn't speak well to our QB situation.
I think most players if not all
upstatenyg : 10/4/2022 12:09 pm : link
would rather be a starter, with the chance to be a playmaker, #1 target over being on the PS of any team.
Beasley isn’t a #1 target. Never was, certainly isn’t now.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/4/2022 12:28 pm : link
He was Dallas’s best receiver for two months in 2018, on an offense built around Ezekiel Elliott. The passing game sputtered. The Cowboys acquired Amari Cooper, promoted Michael Gallup to the lineup and won seven of their last eight to take the East.

Have you missed the fact the giants have no credible receivers at the moment
Problem with CB is that he is
jvm52106 : 10/4/2022 12:36 pm : link
basically the same type of player we have in James, Robinson (when he comes back) and to some degree Toney, in that he will work underneath. We need someone who can be a bit more down the field.

If we could get Mimms from the Jets (for a 5th rd pick) Iw ould do it. Draft picks are needed but if you get a young player who can be here a bit then it is a pretty good deal on our part (except the contract of course).
He’d be our best WR
BillT : 10/4/2022 12:38 pm : link
The minute he entered the building.

We are not looking for a #1 WR on someone’s practice squad. We are trying to upgrade vs what we have now. He would be an upgrade and at this moment we have no slot WR. They are all hurt.

#MissingThePoint
upstatenyg: We all know the current Giant receivers stink.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/4/2022 12:44 pm : link
The question here is whether Cole Beasley would make a significant difference. My view is that he wouldn't. Even in his prime, he wasn't a difference-maker unless he was surrounded by superior weapons. He was a valuable contributor in Dallas and Buffalo, but if you add him to this team I doubt the results change much.

100% True. Doubtful they can do it but if they pull off a win in London this team will be thought if much differently
the current nyg may not have a healthy #3 Wr let alone a #2 or #1
Eric on Li : 10/4/2022 2:06 pm : link
obviously there is no #1 WR floating around on any NFL practice squad for the league minimum - but there is daboll's former #2.

as someone said above (and the entire point of the thread) is that he may not have the choice to catch passes from Tom Brady for more than 1 more week if they don't give him an active roster spot.

there is no depth chart that will be easier to rise up and he knows the system/coaches/gm. he'd be a big upgrade here and if he's out of options with tampa at this time next week he may not have a better offer on the table than an immediate active roster starting spot from the 3-2 nyg (or even better if 4-1).
Put Toney on waivers.....
Fishmanjim57 : 10/4/2022 10:28 pm : link
Then sign Cole Beasley. Beasley knows Daboll's system, and I think he needs a home. The Giants could benefit from a player like him.
As for Toney, I've given up on him. He's an injury prone crackpot, and has never been able to stay on the field. He's just another Gettleman mistake.
Defensewins: Cool hashtag, bro.
Big Blue Blogger : 10/5/2022 2:23 am : link
I was responding to upstatenyg’s post directly above mine, which suggested that joining the Giants would offer Beasley “the chance to be a playmaker, #1 target.” My point, which you missed because you ignored the context, was that giving Cole Beasley a chance to be a #1 receiver would be sticking a square peg in a round hole. Even in his prime, Beasley was successful only when there were far better offensive players around him. The Giants have Saquon Barkley and, well, they have Saquon Barkley.

Would Beasley make some plays? Sure. Nobody said he wouldn’t. Is he better than David Sills? Of course. Nobody said he wasn’t.
