I was watching 1997 Week 1 Eagles at Giants in bed last night. Jim Fassel's first game as a head coach in the NFL. Many rookie's first games: Tiki, Ike, Sam Garnes. I cut out these plays that happened back to back right before the end of the first half to help give the Giants a 14-3 lead.
Certainly a preview of what to come from a Great Giant!

Garnes sealed it with a 95yrd INT

That's not how it was reported. Young wanted Tiki, but Fassel and Accorsi pushed for Hilliard, arguing, correctly it turned out, that Tiki would likely be there a round later.

Still mad? He didn’t even criticize him he said he was more of a joker than a fiery leader but people love to hate.
Christ, get over it already
Tiki went through a tough stretch starting in 98 which lasted a good while. I do not remember many big plays from him that year (the one that comes to mind is the td pass against the undefeated broncos right before the half). Tiki started out the year as the starter before losing his job to Gary Brown.
Tiki got his game back and was a special player for many years.

I wanted him off the team after 99 and apparently that was the plan. I'm glad they kept him. He's one of my favorite Giants of all time and under Coughlin he was electric more than ever. I always thought people overreacted to his comments. I didn't care all that much.

Fassel admitted he told Tiki that he "sucked" in his sophomore year on the team lol
The 98-99 Giants are two of my least favorite teams... the defense was solid but the offense couldn't find an identity or any consistency until Kerry Collins completely arrived in 2000.

Yes, Gary Brown passed away a few months ago. Good to very good RB for a short time with the Giants, successor to Rodney Hampton until he got in a motorcycle accident, as I recall. Successful assistant coach who died at 52.

At the time, I thought his comments on both were misinterpreted but he has had plenty of opportunities to correct and hasn’t done it.
For the 5 year period prior to his retirement, he was as good as anyone in the league and very durable. Many games, he put the team on his back and carried them to a win. He probably knew he needed one more good year to get to the HOF and you have to respect him for knowing that he probably didn’t have it in him.
If Barkley can put up a season like Tiki’s best, I for one would be real happy. Barkley has one of those already.

Was overruled and the GIANTS took Ike Hillard.

Oh...my mistake.
Thanks for the correction.
