Game 1: Carrasco (NYM) vs. Abbott (WASH)
Game 2: Walker (NYM) vs. Espino (WASH)
We've got a doubleheader with questionable weather today in Flushing, with Game 1 scheduled to start in about ten minutes, pending of course any further delays due to inclement weather (we can keep comments & discussion for both games on this thread).
The Braves have a magic number of 1 to win the division, so there will be three chances for that to happen today between their game in Miami later and the Mets' two games today in Queens. Let's see what happens. The odds are overwhelmingly in the Braves' favor (92%) according to
PlayoffStatus.com.
Let's see what happens with the Phillies and Padres too today. The odds are that the Mets will play San Diego (84%), but don't be surprised to see Philly slide in there on the last day since there's only one game separating them now and also because Philly has the tie-breaker between themselves and San Diego since they won the season series against them. Things are still up in the air other than the identity of the 12 playoff teams. The Brewers were eliminated yesterday when the Phillies won against Houston and clinched a playoff berth of their own.

I don't think you can throw one of the big 3 ahead of the still very likely WC round. I think if they're going to win the division (a minor miracle at this point) they'll need to do it by leaving the pitching in tact for the very likely worse case scenario of opening the playoffs on Friday.
I agree. The Mets need to be put out of their misery and the Braves need to end this too for their benefit. Yesterday the Braves must have been off their game after the drama this past weekend.

+1. Exactly.
LOL. I feel the same way. It woud be historic.
You can’t risk Jake throwing 7 innings only to watch the Braves win and have him burned for Friday.

The Mets haven't won a World Series since I was in high school. I would rather not risk throwing away a miracle division win. You need to help create your own luck and not just settle for second place because we are too used to things not going our way.

I agree. Allow me to add, you pitch Jake tomorrow and he doesn't pitch at all in the WC series. You're not going to pitch Jake on short rest in a series deciding game when he hasn't been sharp recently and given his injuries the last two seasons.
You should be able to win against the worst team in baseball with Peterson, Megill, bullpen game, whatever. And just let the chips fall where they may.
If you would really go into that Padres series without being able to pitch Jake, it's just not a good idea.

And they stay alive until tomorrow, both their game and Atlanta’s start at the same time tomorrow afternoon.

The risk is that the Braves win against a far inferior opponent making that start meaningless, and not having Jake at all for a do-or-die 3 game series against a really good San Diego ball club.
You should be able to beat the Nats with Peterson/Megill.
And there's always the chance you pitch Jake, don't get run support even if he pitches well, and lose anyway.
The Mets are in this spot because they shot themselves in Atlanta. Now they need to wear it, and you go win that ball game assuming it's not going to matter, because you need Jake in a short series.

+1. Exactly, especially since the Nats look like they're gonna mail these games in.
While starting DeGrom tomorrow would make him unavailable for the wild card series, if you can somehow make it through that, you'd be able to start Degrom in games 1 and 5 of the NLDS on full rest @LAD (if you make it there), and still get a Scherzer and Bassit start in that series.
I was just thinking the same thing about Carrasco. He and Walker both seem pretty unreliable in the 2nd half of this season.
It's hard to have any confidence in him facing LAD or ATL in the playoffs. Wonder if we'd be better off rolling the dice with Walker or Peterson. Unfortunately, not sure if Peterson is stretched out.
I could see the Mets just going with a full bullpen game and trying to match Walker/Carrasco/Peterson/Megill to try and keep the damage from getting out of hand.
Really poor performance in a big spot. Jake and Max were disappointing but still turned in quality starts. Bassitt was a dog

He really was. No two ways about it. Peterson needs to be in the Mets' starting rotation next season no matter what at this point.

I'm starting to think that all four of the unsigned guys--Jake, Bassitt, Carrasco and Walker--are not locks to be back.
Hope they hold onto Jake, despite the injury risk. It could come down to how he performs in postseason.

It's a tough match up, especially with Met-killer Juan Soto in the lineup. Thank God Tatis is suspended.
I don’t know for sure but I’m assuming the division winner and higher seed, so STL
Alonso leading in RBI
Darvish and Soto are Met killers

Darvish scares the shit outta me.

Ok but the way my brain works...if we lose to Padres it sucks...if we lose to Phillies it absolutely ruins me for years and years

That series scares the shit outta me man. I don't have any kind of overwhelming confidence facing them.

Very true. Our regular season ownership of the Phillies worries me too. A lot of times the worm turns in the playoffs
