Game 1: Carrasco (NYM) vs. Abbott (WASH)
Game 2: Walker (NYM) vs. Espino (WASH)
We've got a doubleheader with questionable weather today in Flushing, with Game 1 scheduled to start in about ten minutes, pending of course any further delays due to inclement weather (we can keep comments & discussion for both games on this thread).
The Braves have a magic number of 1 to win the division, so there will be three chances for that to happen today between their game in Miami later and the Mets' two games today in Queens. Let's see what happens. The odds are overwhelmingly in the Braves' favor (92%) according to
PlayoffStatus.com.
Let's see what happens with the Phillies and Padres too today. The odds are that the Mets will play San Diego (84%), but don't be surprised to see Philly slide in there on the last day since there's only one game separating them now and also because Philly has the tie-breaker between themselves and San Diego since they won the season series against them. Things are still up in the air other than the identity of the 12 playoff teams. The Brewers were eliminated yesterday when the Phillies won against Houston and clinched a playoff berth of their own.

Exactly. Weird move in that sense.

So yeah, outside of Darvish and Snell and Soto and Macbado WHO KILL US…we should be just fine in a three game series.
So….two pitchers kill us but “we can beat them” in a three game series. You guys are really special.
Dude serious question. Are you a fucking troll? At worst you are, at best you are just miserable and annoying.
Not a troll. I’ve cheered on this team way more than you have all season. But go ahead and pile on.
i think optimus (?) said the WC series is all at Citi.

Dude. You are one of the most annoying posters that has ever come through BBI. Your toxicity game after game has ruined these threads here. Im surprised you arent celebrating right now for how much you pom pom'd the Braves all year.
That’s rich. You’ve been a joke on this site for years. A literal fucking punching bag because of the continual ignorant shit you spew. You are one of the biggest pieces of shit on this site. But go on. I’ll be there waiting for the next time you contradict your own bullshit. Moron.
You're the type of dipshit who probably predicted the Mets would win 77 games this year and then goes ape shit because they "only" won 101, and not 110. Go fuck yourself asshole. And speaking of "years" here, nobody even knows where you came from. You weren't here before this year. Go back to whatever hole you crawled out of. Scumbag.

So true. I thought Snablats was bad for a while. but this jackass clearly takes the crown.
Heading into a season i'd sign up for 100 wins in any way shape or form, no questions asked
It absolutely, absolutely sucks that we didn't win the division. I feel sick to my stomach about it.. but drop the shit with the same ol Mets shit. I've seen the "ol Mets", and this ain't it.
For the first time as a fan I am 100% confident that regardless of what happens this postseason, we have an owner who is going to go and try to make the team better next year
...and we're gonna have a lot of fun again.
Still a lot of baseball left. If the 88 win Cardinals can beat the now 2nd best Mets team I ever saw, well shit fellas, anything can happen..no matter what the playoff bracket looks like

Really well said. I’m on board. Now it’s time to put the regular season behind us and embrace playoff baseball at Citifield this weekend. I’m pumped.
Mets all weekend and Giants rare 9:30am start. Hopefully Sunday is not needed for the Mets but if it is I’ll welcome the drama of a decisive game 3.
Let’s fucking go Mets!

The Braves had an incredible season. So did we. We likely falll a game short. We're supposed to be miserable because our team won 100+ games and has playoff games this weekend for the first time in 6 years?? The nerve of us for being proud of this team!
McCann is not a ML player. He is a guy who would hit .230 in AAA.
He should not be on the postseason roster except Mets did nothing to replace this black hole either during the season or at the trade deadline.
He is awful. An automatic out. With runners on, I'm relieved when he strikes out because it means he won't hit into a DP. And he is not even that good defensively. Terrible at blocking balls in the dirt--a real problem with so many pitchers on the roster who throw sliders, sinkers and splitters.
He is utter garbage.
The Divisional Series games are a best of 5 in a 2-2-1 format (team with the best record has homefield advantage). The brackets remain as they are, but the team with the best record has homefield.
The League Championship Series is a best of 7 in a 2-3-2 format as is the World Series. The team with the best record has homefield. See below:
Home-field for the World Series round goes to the team with the best regular-season record, regardless of postseason seeding within that team’s league.
If the two teams had identical regular season records, the tiebreaker format linked above (head-to-head record, then intradivision record, then interdivision record) applies."

Chris, you were the one constantly saying not to worry about losing the division while the Mets were choking it away all of September, that the Mets will win it. Good call
Moze, there is a difference between optimistic and denying reality. You are doing the latter
And there is no difference between what happened to the Rangers and a baseball pitching staff. The extra innings under duress that the Mets staff will have to pitch, and playing LA instead of the STL/PHI winner if they beat SD, is a monumental difference and will wear out the staff
Every single baseball writer and broadcaster stated how important winning the division was
To say anything else is denying reality
2 catchers (Nido/McCann)
2 DHs (vogey/righty)
2 marte fill in options Guillorme/Naquin
4 SP (maybe 3 for the first series?)
17 Diaz
18 Otto
19 Lugo
20 Peterson
21 Joely
22 Smith
23 May
24 Trevor?
25 gore
26 the other of vientos/alvarez
imo carrasco is clearly odd sp out.
Good to see Alvarez behind the plate either way.

You could be right but I'd be pretty shocked if they dont reward Carrasco with a spot after the season he's had. Also, Givens is essentially healthy and ready to go. I wonder if he gets added?
Good to see Alvarez behind the plate either way.
better late than never. really still cant understand how they didnt foresee that it might be a good idea to get theses guys some reps earlier.
The good news is that in 07 and 08, we were done. There is an opportunity for our Mets to continue playing and instead of packing it up for the offseason, we have a WIldcard round to play.
I’m not going to lie, this still hurts but it’s not over yet. Perhaps we are on the precipice of a signature moment for the Mets.
Perhaps wishful thinking-but we have playoff baseball this weekend which I was not so sure would be in April.

Did I really say the Mets were guaranteed winning the division? You’ll have to find where I said that.
And look at you taking victory laps right now. You must be pumped the Mets didn’t close out the division

In fairness, the Mets played to win as they normally would right until the division was decided. Buck went out and got Taijuan right away---even though it would have been nice to allow him to finish the 5th inning so he could get credit for the win. Now it's time to do this stuff. Beforehand would have been wrong. For what it's worth, I don't think they would have pitched deGrom tomorrow if the situation presented itself. my guess is that the start goes to one of Williams, Megill, or Peterson in what will be a bullpen game.
the ball flies off his bat
P.S. Rain is coming down harder now in the 6th inning in a blowout. They may as well call it since it's an official game at this point. What's the point of continuing on for another hour in that mess?

I know you will never agree, but the fact is a hallmark of Alderson's Mets tenure has been indecision and slow reactions, constantly leaving the team short on the bench because he never makes a decision in a timely manner. Even other GMs complained about trying to trade with him because he wouldnt ever make a decision

No one is taking a victory lap. We are calling out people who deny reality like you. You kept telling us to relax, everything will be fine. And then the Mets choked away the division
You are like DiComo, he said all summer to not worry, the Mets lead by X games. Then when they blow it, he says nothing
And is it Jay on a the Island??? who was the Braves fan? To the only good Braves fan - congrats to your douchebag if a team in another incredible season.
Z, any chance you have your annual preseason win prediction thread?? Be a good time for us to all have a good laugh at how off all of us were.
But I also think it's because for the last two months, we have all known it was going to me down to the Braves series. And to be swept. Very anti-climatic.
I feel wistful. 100 wins but somehow it feels like a bit of a letdown. I think we will all get charged up again after Mets beat Padres.

they were short everything in his tenure because they had no money. during his tenure they were pretty predictable and aggressive with prospect promotions - which is specifically what i was talking about. conforto's original promotion straight from AA was the closest comparable to the team's situation this year and they not only did that but let him stay up and earn more PT even after they traded for depth. They moved Cespedes to CF to keep him in the lineup.
But I also think it's because for the last two months, we have all known it was going to me down to the Braves series. And to be swept. Very anti-climatic.

agree on all the above. in some ways that braves series felt like the fake exercise of watching your own "funeral". it was a playoff level series and they got their teeth kicked in, with painful consequences. the division championship got taken away from them and they were defenseless to stop it.
but they are down they aren't out and hopefully it gets them pissed off and fired up. and who knows if they see ATL again maybe they will come in over confident like they did in that series in early August.
the most important thing is the mets show up in the postseason as the team that played the first 4.5 months, not the team that showed up the last 6 weeks. maybe getting embarrassed helps motivate that even though they shouldn't have needed it.
I think they could beat the Dodgers in either a 5 or 7 but certainly winning a 5 games series would seem more likely.
I think they could beat the Dodgers in either a 5 or 7 but certainly winning a 5 games series would seem more likely.
there is no scenario where it's better to have to face both the LAD and ATL, and that's what they were playing to avoid. The wild card round on top obviously too.
however i do think the LAD are less of a threat than ATL - so if ATL can somehow get themselves eliminated before the NLCS, the degree of difficulty isn't the worst case.
a Braves/Mets NLCS would be epic but that would be a pretty herculean path just to get to the WS.
But to your point, yes it will be a gauntlet to win the WS. They will have certainly earned it if they do.
great to see Alvarez heat up. he and vientos should get the starts tomorrow and hopefully they can both get some confidence because they are going to be needed against Snell and as pinch hitters possibly in a big spot against Hader.

Ha. I did that for years Shecky but not this year. Ill try to pick it back up next year!
And is it Jay on a the Island??? who was the Braves fan? To the only good Braves fan - congrats to your douchebag if a team in another incredible season.
Thanks Shecky and I will congratulate you guys on a hell of a season. 100 wins is no easy task and I know many of you guys are down after the sweep but as the Braves proved last year anything can happen in the playoffs. This was the most exciting season that I can remember in nearly two decades.
Keep Vogelbach on the bench for an important situation against a RHRP.
Assuming no Marte, start McNeil in the OF and Guillorme at 2b.
Nimmo
Lindor
McNeil
Alonso
Escobar
Canha
Alvarez
Guillorme
Nidon't or McCan't
Vogelbach, Naquin, Vientos on bench to hit for catchers if the situation calls for it.
100 wins :-) Let's make it 101 tomorrow :-)
100 wins :-) Let's make it 101 tomorrow :-)
let's pray for a 4/4 with 4 homers for alvarez. if he can do some damage it could be a real gamechanger and right now he's a total unknown. the 2 balls he mashed today were both of RHP too.
About a dozen times in all of mlb history
Worked out well for the dodgers last year
Would be pretty sweet.

I know that other teams have lost the division with 100 wins. But the Giants, for example, didn't clinch DURING the Dodgers 100th victory.
