Was dropping my son off yesterday before school for HS basketball training. I had right of way as I turned left into the school entrance. I looked to my left through driver's side window and saw a pickup truck pulling out of the entrance, heading directly at me! He had a stop sign and I don't know how he didn't see me. I was driving my '17 Mustang, which is pretty low to ground; all I saw was the truck grill coming right at me, fast!
I mean right TF at me! I floored it to try to avoid impact. The truck plowed through the back of my car. I think if I hadn't floored it, the truck would've gone right through the driver's side door (I might be in the hospital right now or worse).
The combination of the impact and my major acceleration sent us spinning through wet grass, through a pretty big school sign (smashing it into pieces) and just barely missing a very big telephone pole. The truck just kept going. I was too busy trying to avoid crashing into anything else to get a license plate. When I finally got my car under control, the truck was long gone.
My son was in an awkward position, putting on his sneakers, when we were hit. His neck and back have been bothering him.
To add more drama to the situation, there's a pretty good chance the suspect driver was a parent or guardian of one of my son's teammates, who had just dropped off his son at training.
My son is a freshman and it's still not officially a team. It's a mix of JV and varsity and a few who won't make it (most of the kids who are training are pretty serious bball players and only a few won't make it).
I'm pretty confident my son will make JV and since most of the upper class kids drive themselves, there's a decent chance if it was a kid's parent that hit and us and ran, their son will be a teammate of my son. My son also got a glimpse of the driver and we know the color of the truck.
I learned today my Mustang is totaled. It was nice looking, a good year imo and a fun car to drive (was quick, had eco-boost, so got pretty good gas mileage, yet 340 HP). I had thoughts of holding onto it through its antique years. Guess that's not happening.
I asked the police officer to check security video. Accidents happen, but hit and run is really really wrong.
I assume the police would know where to look for this type of video but if they’re no help maybe you can ask around.
You need to follow up with police ASAP.

Pretty certain the insurance company will push for it.
They have cameras, just not near this particular spot. There are 3 entrances to the school. This one is pretty far from the school building.
I have a copy of police report and I'm trying to make sure Geico doesn't screw us. We haven't had problems with them in the past, but then again we haven't had a claim of the magnitude of this one.
I was preparing (with Kelly Blue Book value) to have to fight Geico for fair Total Loss settlement, but got an email this morning and Geico is doing the right thing. At this point I have no complaints with Geico.
No word if the police have identified the scumbag. I'm not really optimistic they will. I'm a mix of sad and mad.
My son's back is still bothering him, so have to get him checked out (Geico is covering 80% up to $10K). And now have to look for a new car.
