Is Starting DJ This Sunday Even the Right Move?

Anakim : 10/5/2022 9:02 am
Yom Kippur Thougts:

What we're essentially looking at is a strictly limited in mobility Daniel Jones vs. a guy who has only played in one NFL game in his entire career, Davis Webb. That's what makes me so nervous about Sunday. Even the most ardent Daniel Jones supporter can't say that he wins games with his arm rather than his legs. Will a strictly pocket-passer Daniel Jones be enough to overcome the Packers? I lean towards no and that scares the hell out of me.
Is starting DJ ever the right move ?

Jones is a very limited game manager that can make plays with his legs but not his arm . The drop off from Jones to Taylor to Webb is not huge. Giants need a QB.
Beyond his play
Scooter185 : 10/5/2022 9:11 am : link
I'd also be worried about making the injury worse on a sack
Don’t get the worries
BillT : 10/5/2022 9:13 am : link
If he’s healthy enough to play he will and if not he won’t. If his mobility is limited it won’t be any worse that Webb’s who’s a “pocket passer” if he’s even that. Beating the Packers was always a long shot and we’re even more compromised, injury wise, then normal (though it seems pretty normal for us). It’s not like the choir between DJ and Taylor. Then you might consider not playing DJ until he’s a lot better. A limited DJ vs. Webb I’m taking DJ.
yes.

So many are willing to give W's away for free. Glad the team, coaches and players don't think that way.
The Giants have been very coy
Section331 : 10/5/2022 9:29 am : link
about the severity of his ankle injury, and understandably so. It is very possible that his sprain wasn't that serious and he'll be ready for Sunday. If so, why shouldn't he play?

Not really the question that was asked, but no surprise that it goes there.

To the OP, you re probably correct, but there s 4 + days before kick off.

I do not think Jones is good but the drop off from him to Webb will be gigantic. The Packers should be heavy favorites but starting Webb gives us almost no chance to win.
eh
Greg from LI : 10/5/2022 9:42 am : link
The Giants are barely even attempting to pass the ball. Webb can hand off just as well as Jones can, though he can't run like him.

Didn't think the Giants had much of a shot in this game anyway.
I am reminded
Costy16 : 10/5/2022 9:43 am : link
Of when he pulled his hamstring two years ago and they brought him back too early vs the Cardinals. He was a shell of himself, and the Giants got beat by 19 in that game.
I think Webb starts, Jones makes the trip but
Del Shofner : 10/5/2022 9:45 am : link
doesn't come in unless Webb is hurt, Taylor stays home so as not to fly with a concussion, and we see a lot of wildcat with Saquon and (finally) Toney.

Yes, that was one of the Tua aspects less commented upon and kind of shocking but not at all surprising: neurologists pretty uniform in view that you do not fly in hours (or even days) post head trauma.

If he's relatively healthy (and mobile), then obviously it's a no-brainer.
Will a Cortizone shot to Ankle dull the pain so Jones can run better?
MartyNJ1969 : 10/5/2022 10:31 am : link
just a thought.
bbi will be pining for their morst hated player

Daniel Jones, again.
JFC if he’s cleared
Dave on the UWS : 10/5/2022 10:56 am : link
he plays. The bigger question is, if he’s NOT who is the backup?

That's a terrible idea. Numb the ankle so he makes moves on it he shouldn't, exacerbating the injury. I'd rather he sit for a week.
If he's healthy enough to execute the gameplan
Biteymax22 : 10/5/2022 11:15 am : link
He should play. If he isn't he should sit. If him and Tyrod are for some reason both available, I'd still want a 3rd QB active just in case.
Legitimately no offense meant by this
Mike in Long Beach : 10/5/2022 11:19 am : link
But I don't understand the "should he play?" speculation, to be honest. More than any other coach I can remember, Daboll is super tight-lipped on injuries. We legitimately have no clue if this is an actual injury to be concerned with or if it was one of those things where it was pretty much fine in 24-48 hours.

Should he start? I have no freakin clue.

People get scared over strangest things
ZogZerg : 10/5/2022 11:25 am : link
Maybe you should be scared of making assumptions?

You have no clue on how bad his ankle is.
If he can move around enough I think you have to play him
csb : 10/5/2022 11:32 am : link
Every game in the NFL matters; GB has not played well early in the season and a win here would be huge for the Gmen. In a lot of ways I think this matchup is better for the Giants than the Dallas matchup and if you can get a win you play your best players.

Those that say the drop off from DJ to Webb is not huge - but the guy has never thrown an NFL pass. You are making assumptions from a preseason game where his teammates and opponents are either on a practice squad or out of a job. Look at what a disaster Glennon/Fromm was last year - if DJ can do enough to be effective and it isn't at huge risk of making it worse you have to start him.
we are going to win this game
markky : 10/5/2022 11:36 am : link
it will be easier if DJ plays, but we win either way. without DJ it will be the Barkley show.

It's why some of us were screaming to keep Webb as 3rd QB at the very least he's in the room/practicing which could have made a difference. I mean its not like we have an iron man QB like Eli or backup QB.

Webb is on the practice squad - so he is still in every meeting, film session, etc.

You need to stop screaming that.
Webb IS the third QB. He IS IN THE ROOM.

Come on guys, pay attention.

Judging by your post it appears that you believe...

1. Anyone who is critical of Daniel Jones "hates" him

2. No one should be critical of a professional athlete unless they can take his place and play just as well
No

No, not with this OL.

Let him get heal rather than have the ankle be an issue for the entire year.

Since I assume that neither of you have medical credentials, haven't spoken to Jones or the trainers, and you haven't watched Jones practice...How can you possibly have an INFORMED opinion as to whether or not Jones should be starting???

If Jones is healthy, he plays.
Yeah, the key is "if healthy."
Since1965 : 10/5/2022 4:36 pm : link
That's different than "able to play."
Running is certainly what makes him most valuable
UConn4523 : 10/5/2022 4:45 pm : link
but I'd still rather him in there and not running over Davis Webb.
