With the NHL hockey season kicking off tomorrow.I'm interested to hear how the fanbase sees the Rangers season going?
Are they going to improve, regress? Any changes need to be made to the roster or lineup?
Rangers open up the season Tuesday at home vs the Lightning.
Panarin - Trocheck - Vesey
Laf - Chytil - Goodrow
Blais - Carpenter - Reaves
Then these 4 as extras: Hunt - Brodzinski - Kravtsov - Gauthier
Rydahl has been assigned to AHL Hartford.

They should flip Laf or Chytil and Vesey. Vesey doesn't belong in the top-6.

Agreed, Vesey is like this year's version of Dryden Hunt in the eyes of GG.
The kid line has looked the best together, but Gallant rightfully recognizes that he has to break them up to help bolster the top six. I'm still wondering how Vesey ascended to the top six so quickly after being signed off the street.
Agreed, but my guess is they'll keep him around due to how popular he is in the locker room and the fact that he can kick Tom Wilson's ass.
Still, we'd save some dough so if we waived him and replaced him with a guy like Rydahl.
The kid clearly was immature and made some wrong moves last year. But he has come back this year and sat in front of the media, and acknowledged that fact. Tough pill to swallow for a young kid, not a move someone who is "mentally weak" makes.
It is insane how much some professional sports fans act like every move a young player makes is a personal attack on the fanbase. Did you handle it much better as a 21 year old celebrity and millionaire? Let us know how it is done please.
Although we'll see how that mental midget Kravtsov takes the demotion.
So he is looking at other stuff

You ever play hockey “dude” I have, I know the mentality. Russians are notorious flakers. It’s why they drop in drafts among other reasons. Guy wanted to be given a spot, didn’t get it, refused to earn it in the AHL, ran home to his parents. I don’t have hate for the kid I want him to thrive here, but don’t act like he’s handled anything with maturity. This is his last shot as a Ranger, earn it or Gallant will let him rot on the bench. Also Kratsov is a celebrity millionaire? Ok. Overreact much.
If he’s gone it’s take shots at our skilled players all over again

Oh horseshit. Reaves did nothing but play shitty hockey last year.
Well, now comes the real test because he hasn't looked good and now he's skating with the extras. Will he throw a temper tantrum and go back to Russia if he isn't playing or, GASP, if he's sent to Hartford?
Disclaimer: haven't been able to watch any of the pre-season because, Free at Last, Optimum/MSG is no longer our carrier. But the downside is it's tough to find MSG on any other, hoping to hook up with SNR's Uzzu at some point.
But, shock, what I don't understand is his ~14 game cameo at the end of the '21 season (spring). He was playing right wing, digging in the corners and along the boards, skated well, involved in the rush and aware of positioning. He did not look overmatched at all. How does his lethargy (for lack of a better word, certainly not going to use 025's negativity) get explained?
I dislike moving Laf from the Kids' line: it has been the strongest performer in SCP and pre-season: I dislike the idea of undercutting two lines to make up for the hole on RW1 (send Buch packing but sign Nemeth and Reaves?). Laf is clearly comfortable there, Filip and Kappo too. Give the guys a chance, it's a work in process and won't necessarily come together just because the calendar says so.
I gather Hajek has looked awful. Is this going to be another year-long GG blindspot on 3rd pair??
Also disappointed to see Rydahl sent to Wolfpack; Mercogs has been saying he looks good.
It's practice though. I'll save my meltdown for Tuesday.
I get the Vesey and much agree with Kravtsov. Rangers have to find a way of breaking their losing streak of losing highly drafted, offensively skilled players. Between GG and Drury, there's a lot of boot camp, tight leash.
Brett, what's your reasoning on KAM and Fox? They both like to move the puck toward the opponent's blue line and Fox--we'll see--but he lost a bit of his Norris defensive zone excellence last year, and KAM still prone to his moments.
Apparently, despite the bullhorn imperatives of he who shall not be named (and this is one of those cases you can confirm what he said, all these disparaging comments about the worst of the worst), much commentary that KAM has lit the camp on fire and is poised to take another leap in level of play. It is camp, after all, but there were many good moments in the Playoffs.
For those who want Laf on the first line, Laf is not a RW. Blais is not losing his job at 1RW due to injury, he is a very heavy player to play against. Kravtsov is the only question mark but he will be given an extended look before he is moved from line 2. Gallant is not breaking up the kid line. They have been very effective together since the playoffs and it really gives us depth. The 4th line is the only unknown but Gallant will use it to match against who we are playing against.
I predict a very good year for the Rangers as we have a ton of quality players in Hartford ready to come up if needed.
Opening night should look like this:
Kreider Zibs Blais
Panarin Trochek Krav
Laf Chytil Kakko
Goodrow Carpenter Vesey
Lingern Fox
Miller Trouba
Jones Schneider

ready physically for this level. I wouldn’t be surprised by any moves made with him.

Kravtsov's contract is one-way. He can't go to the AHL without clearing waivers. Probably why he signed it.
Which would be hard on that team since Fox is entrenched on PP1 and the Rangers only use 1D on the PP, but I think Miller's 5v5 play elevates this year.

My thinking is more driven by wanting to see experimentation on D rather than strong conviction in KAM/Fox working well together.
I think it's worth trying to combine the most skilled players and seeing what they can do. 5-10 games together or something like that. Maybe it bombs. I think it really sucks that we almost never got to see McDonagh play with Stralman or Shattenkirk for an extended period.
I think Miller is one of the more misunderstood Rangers in recent memory - he took a huge step up in the back half of last year. He makes some poor reads in the defensive zone sometimes but I think they're overstated - literally everyone does (Hedman, Fox, Makar included) and I think Miller gets blamed for them more often just because it's easy to blame the F to D conversion than break down the play and see that there were multiple fuck-ups. In the playoffs particularly - when Pittsburgh was slicing through our defenseman in our zone it was because the forwards were doing a terrible job getting back, allowing the Penguins to walk the blueline (which should never happen at even strength).
Miller does so many things well that outweigh those mistakes. He's already a good defenseman with a lot more upside.

This might have been the most demanding practice Gallant has run since taking over. Last night wasn’t nearly good enough. And this camp has been blah…for whatever that is worth.
I’m starting to think that the best move would be to break up the Kids Line, but that would leave Chytil naked out there. Plus, they’ve shown no interest in returning Laf to RW.

Sammy Blais is not a 1st line right winger.
Vesey officially signed
Gauthier waived
Blais doubtful for tomorrow with upper body injury
Kravtsov back on the second line in practice
Practice lines:
Kreider - Zib - Kakko
Panarin - Trocheck - Kravtsov
Laf - Chytil - Goodrow
Vesey - Hunt - Carpenter - Reaves(Guessing Hunt gets scratched)
PP1 - Fox, Zibanejad, Trocheck, Panarin and Kreider
PP2 - Trouba, Chytil, Kravtsov, Kakko and Laf with Jones rotating in
Brennan Othmann can mix it up pretty good
Othmann - ( New Window )
