Morning folks! We'll do a thread for the game later tonight when it's appropriate (about an hour prior to game time or so). Check out the following:
SNY will have pre and post game coverage for all Mets post-season games. This link worked pretty well for me before:

Let's hope for some more Terrance Gore magic for a third year in a row!
Tonight's pitching matchup is already set:
October 7, 2022 - Starting pitching matchups for Padres at Mets
The Pads have already announced that lefthander Blake Snell is starting tomorrow, but the Mets haven't. What do you guys think of the strategy the Mets are likely using of starting Bassitt for Game 2 if they are victorious in Game 1 and starting deGrom in Game 2 if they lose Game 1? Personally, I'm all for it. We can chit chat about that and the reasons why in this thread if anyone would like, amongst other things.

.
Here are some articles to start things off:
FYI - '86 Met World Champ Bobby Ojeda will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game #1 at Citi Field tonight.
Another FYI - The Mets are goin go to be wearing black tonight, as they have all year during Friday home games. It'll be the first time they've worn black in the postseason since Game 4 of the 2000 World Series against the Yankees.

To close off, here's a neat little postseason hype video someone made for this year's club. Hopefully this'll help to put things into perspective this year: this is one of the best teams in baseball and can win a championship, no matter what happened down the stretch.
Enjoy :-)

Padres Postseason Roster for the Wildcard round against the Mets - ( New Window )
They may leave Ruf off if Marte is fully ready to go in the OF, but I think Buck likes the flexibility in the position players to PH in the later innings.
For the Divisional Series you can easily argue that point. I agree with you.
Quote:
I will really like them - specifically Did they leave off Naquin because they expect to have Vogelbach as the lefty bat off the bench, because Alvarez is going to get a shot as the every day DH? I hope so.
obviously also if it means Marte is back that's great news also.
Megill hasn't looked good but I expect he's essentially the mop up guy if necessary as opposed to Carrasco/Walker who aren't used to coming out of the BP. Carrasco hasn't been great either so no big loss there and while Walker has been good enough that you may regret not having him, i think there's logic to trying to hold him in reserve for the next series, and the reality that he was already half burned.
All in all I like the roster decisions. Even Ruf makes sense. He has played in the NL West and I'm sure he has experience against a lot of the Padres pitching staff (including this year). He's a veteran who is better suited to pinch hitting than any rookie with limited experience. He now gets a fresh slate and will come into these games in a very limited fashion. Take a good at bat against a lefty off the bench. His batted ball data wasn't awful most of the time he was here and he did take some good at bats and hit into some bad luck. He could very well get 1 big hit in this series and turn his entire narrative around very quickly.
+1.
Great post Eric. Makes total sense. Game 2 against Snell will be interesting. Do you think we'll see Alvarez catching so the Mets can get his bat in the lineup against the lefty? I'm assuming Marte will be Dhing for this entire series when I say this.
i think Alvarez' best chance to get in at C is tonight with Scherzer because he's caught him before. i think the least chance of alvarez catching is whatever game bassitt starts because he seems hard on a catcher.
if they want to have both vogey and alvarez' bats in the lineup tonight vs. Yu, i think that's the best chance for alvarez starting at C. then id guess he DH's whenever SD starts Snell with 1 of the righty catchers in.
I have a feeling he has a very good postseason and never sees the minor leagues again (save for perhaps rehab)
Quote:
Thanks for your Mets threads! They are terrific and we all appreciate the effort that goes into them.
I know the ship has sailed on Dom, but I have a hard time adding Ruf to the roster vs. Dom. I know they aren't directly competing because Ruf is a righty, but with Alvarez on the roster as the guy who will get AB's vs. a lefty, it leaves fewer AB's for Ruf and I'd prefer to have a better defensive 1B on the roster than Ruf.
No probs man! Check out Eric on Li's 12:23 post. I think he nailed it right there about the Ruf situation. I think it came down to Ruf vs. Vientos more than it did Dom due to the amount of lefties (5 out of 12---including Snell and Hader) on the Padres' staff and Snell pitching tomorrow. I would not be averse to adding Dom though if he's needed further down the line in the playoffs, if the Mets advance of course.
Makes sense - I didn't think about the NL West connection but that's a good call. Not to mention he's probably better suited than anyone coming off the bench to PH in a big spot and deliver a quality AB.
Let's hope Max and DeGrom/Bassitt show up and can build momentum into LA. The blister is a little concerning but hopefully DeGrom can battle through it.
Did anyone catch ESPN expert predictions? 27 experts picked the Dodgers vs. 4 experts picked the Mets. 0 experts picked the Mets to make the WS and only 1 picked the Mets to win the NL. Even two people picked the 93-win Cardinals. It's amazing how down on the Mets everyone is after the last two weeks. I'm excited to be the underdog!
ESPN exclusive?
ESPN exclusive?
SNY wilk have pre-game and post-game coverage before every Mets playoff game for the entirety of this post-season run, but they will not be broadcasting anymore games until April. All Mets and Padres games in the W.C. round will be broadcast by ESPN (see the top of the thread).
I have a feeling he has a very good postseason and never sees the minor leagues again (save for perhaps rehab)
I sort of feel the same way. He barreled 3 balls in just like 7 or 8 batted ball events. that was more than the other 2 rookies this year in more like 30 events. Dom had like 7 barrels this year in 100 events.
I think alvarez could very well have a postseason sort of like Conforto as a rookie - hit 1 or 2 big homers and continue taking decent at bats. conforto didn't light anything up in 2015 but he hit .200 with 3 homers and 6 rbis.
if alvarez could do similar it would be a miracle because conforto was both 2 years older and had almost 200 plate appearances in the big leagues under his belt whereas alvarez got 14.

Hopefully Max is more himself tonight. He said the oblique is a non-issue. We'll see...
The bar is low for him. Both the Mets catchers or (more likely) the Mets RH DHs have been dreadful hitting

Ron will be doing games for TBS as usual
Hopefully we get a Keith sighting on pre/post games!
Too bad they didn't bring up Alvarez earlier last month to get him more at bats. It looks like he's gonna be a bigger part of this run than many realized. The three game series at home against the Nats was a nice warm-up for him and the team so they can get used to this October chill in the air. Hopefully this affects San Diego negatively enough to have a positive effect on the outcome of the game for the Mets.

the winds blowing NW: is that wind blowing out or in (or neither)?
Quote:
There's a 14% chance of rain and the wind will be blowing northwest at around 10-15 MPH with a low of 50 F. No shadows to deal with for hitters tonight, just bright lights/pressure of the post season.

That's what I'm trying to figure out now, lol. It's driving me nuts! Does anyone know?
153 - Padres (21st in MLB for the 2022 regular season)
Yankees lead MLB with 254. The Braves came in second at 243. The Brewers were third w/219. The Pads with Soto and Machado are power threats. We've just got Alonso as our only bona fide power threat (Lindor is meh). I hope the wind keeps the ball in. Plays towards the Mets' advantage with their offensive style of play. Gotta get back to grinding out at-bats, Chavez style.
Most home runs in 2022 by team - Statmuse.com - ( New Window )
I looked it up and it looks like CitiField has home plate pretty much due south, so winds from the NW would be blowing in
Megill and Drew Smith have been ineffective in their "return" to the pen. I understand why they left Walker and Carrasco off but I think it is a mistake. Go with your best arms.
It seems like they might be thinking ahead to the Dodgers series, where a rested Walker/Carrasco could be a bonus.
To me, that's how you wind up falling between two stools.
That said, it is a relatively minor issue. If Mets have to put either Smith or Megill in a game, they are probably either way ahead or in big trouble.
It will be tough for RH hitter to have a high flyball go out in LF.

We looking at same Drew Smith? 5 innings pitches since coming back and gave up 5 hits and 1 run (1 HR)..
I'm with you on Tylor but I'd rather run Smith out there than May or Givens

Polar Bear and Troll laugh at your silly wind
DH: Vogey (vs. a RHP tonight, he's the guy to start)
Catcher: McCann
-The guys on SNY said that he was 4 for 10 in his career against Darvish (he also hit well in the Nats series, but they're the Nats, lol). I hope Max doesn't kill him tonight. If it wasn't for that offensive stat, I'd start Nido, who to me is the better player now.
1B: Alonso
-Pete has gone 7 for 14 with a homer and 4 RBIs.
2B: Guillorme
-I'm stuck here. I'm assuming Marte is DHing, so that leaves an OF spot open. McNeil has to play, so I'm guessing Luis G gets the start tonight because of that.
SS: Lindor
-Time to get hot. Mets need him and Alonso to being the powerhouses of the lineup.
3B: Escobar
-Gotta hope he continues his hot streak. He's been money lately. Hope he continues his hot streak. Where he hits in the order is the only question.
CF: Nimmo
-Duh
LF: McNeil or Canha
-Gotta get a way to get Jeff in the lineup assuming Marte's on the roster, but not playing the OF tonight. If Marte does play RF tongiht, then this is all moot and Jeff goes back to 2B with Guillorme sitting.
RF: Canha or McNeil
-Same as above basically. Canha is a guy that can do something this postseason. I'm looking forward to it.
If Marte is only DHing and punch running this series, then he doesn't play tonight vs. Darvish. He'll get tomorrow though against Snell the lefty. I'm worried about Starling in the OF. My guess is that the Mets use him as a pinch hitter and pinch runner this series, along with a start tomorrow against Snell.
If Marte plays the OF, then McNeil goes back to 2nd w/Luis G sitting. Your OF goes back to being Canha in LF, Nimmo in CF, and Marte in RF.
Did I miss anything? Guess we'll find out in a few hours what Buck and the Mets have planned for Starling this series.
Quote:
But towards 1B and the RF line. Not directly in towards home.

Obligatory...
1) B. Nimmo (L) – CF
2) F. Lindor (S) – SS
3) J. McNeil (L) – RF
4) P. Alonso (R) – 1B
5) E. Escobar (S) – 3B
6) D. Vogelbach (L) – DH
7) M. Canha (R) – LF
8) L. Guillorme (L) – 2B
9) J. McCann (R) – C
You could play around with the 5th and 6th slots, but I trust Escobar to hit 5th now over Vogey since Escobar has been so hit over the stretch run. Marte's on the post-season roster for this series, but I'm assuming he doesn't play the OF this series, hence Ruf's addition to the roster.
I'm guessing Marte only DHs, pinch hits against lefties (the Pads have 5) , and pinch runs if called upon. I think he DHs tomorrow against Snell, based on the roster and his injury history. Do you guys think Buck plays Marte in RF tonight based on current circumstances (injury, matchups, and post-season roster composition)?
That is very good news!
lindor
mcneil
alonso
vogey (2/3 vs. yu with 2 rbi)
marte
escobar
canha
mccann (4/10 vs. yu with 2 homers, a 2b, and a walk)
Wow! Big news! That changes everything. McNeil has to be hitting 3rd then between Lindor and Pete, right?
2 - 1 final in CLE (Bieber (w) and McLanahan (l))
and 0 - 0 in STL in the 7th (Wheeler and Quintana)
hopefully the Mets continue that trend (and the Padres do not, lol)

Cards manager single handedly blew that game. He left the reliever in WAAAYYY too long, handed the next guy a pile of shit, then had the IF in when the goal should’ve been to get out of the inning tied.
Just dumb shit.
Should have a result in about an hour.

I've got Mets in 3 (series can go either way; glad Marte is back)
Degrom and Max both failed in critical games already. "The other team was in playoffs mode" doesn't make that better. There is no "should win". The Mets "shouldn't" be in the wild card and they are. Anything can happen when you leave this up to a wild card series.

the mets should beat this team. Bell hasn't been as bad for Pads as Ruf, but he's been bad. .192/.316/.271 for a robust 587 ops. He has 3 homers and 14 rbis for them and he's hitting cleanup. Tyler Naquin's numbers as a met are better across the board and he didn't even make the bench. imagine if he was hitting cleanup?
pitch around soto and machado all day. do not let them beat you. literally give them nothing to hit.
Versus the Mets, I feel like it's peak deGrom against us.
