Safety Xavier McKinney

Q: What happened?

A: I got into a Can-Am accident. I kind of just flipped over, not flipped over but tilted over, fell on my hand. That's basically what happened.

Q: Was your friend driving or a guide, a teammate?

A: Yeah, we were on a sightseeing tour. That's what I can tell you. It was nothing that was reckless. This was just simply being able to see, being able to be out of the country, seeing out the country, seeing what it looked like. It was just an unfortunate event that happened.

Q: Were any teammates in the thing with you?

A: No.

Q: What actually happened to your hand? What's the injury?

A: Just my fingers. I've just got a broken finger. Like I said, it was unfortunate. Luckily, and I thank God that it wasn't anything worse, but like I said, it wasn't anything that was reckless that was going on. Just kind of a freak accident.

Q: Do you need surgery? Did you go to the hospital there? Is it something you took care of when you got back here?

A: I went to the hospital over there, but I did get surgery when I got back here.

Q: Were you aware that it was prohibited in your contract to ride an ATV?

A: No.

Q: Talking to Brian and (general manager) Joe (Schoen) did they make you aware that's not something they would prefer to have you do?

A: Before this happened?

Q: After.

A: We didn't get into that. Obviously, they were more concerned about my well-being and my health and that's what I was more concerned about. We didn't get into any of that, but like I said, it was an unfortunate event. It was one of those things where it's my first time out of the country pretty much besides being out in London, so I wanted to get a visual for what it looked like. Sightseeing tour, nothing crazy. Just unfortunate.

Q: Were you driving?

A: It was a sightseeing tour.

Q: Some of those tours they give you your own to drive. Sometimes you sit in the back of one. So, what was the situation?

A: Sightseeing tour.

Q: What's the emotion that you feel for being out for your teammates?

A: Obviously it hurts. These guys, we've put in the work. Countless amount of hours together. I know what I put into this game. I know how much we have collectively as a group put into what we've done to build where we're at now. It hurts a lot for me. Mental rollercoaster for me, but I'm going to continue to be here for my team, I'm going to continue to lead how I do and just make sure that I can be able to help and provide to win these games whether I'm playing or not.

Q: You expecting to be back this season?

A: No timeline on it. I'm just trying to take it day by day, do what everybody is asking me to do. That's what I'm here for. I'll be fine.

Q: Do they expect you to have full use of your fingers?

A: Yeah, my hand will be fine. That's the good thing.

Q: Because you're on the non-football injury list they can withhold pay. Have you discussed that with them, and would you be upset if they attempted to?

A: No, I wouldn't be upset with it. Like I said, I take full responsibility in what was going on. I'm an accountable person, so for me I was just more upset about knowing that I wasn't going to be able to be here for my team. But as far as that goes, I'm still going to be able to help as much as I can. Like I said, I'm going to be in meetings, I'm going to be out there in practice, and helping as much as I can so we can keep this thing rolling.

Q: What day did that happen?

A: This happened on Wednesday (Nov. 2). Yeah, Wednesday.

Q: It's just the one finger or multiple fingers that you had surgery on?

A: This was a couple fingers.

Q: You mentioned how it was an accident, but did you apologize to Brian and your teammates for this happening?

A: Yeah, I've already addressed it with them. They kind of already knew when it happened. They were the first people to really know about it.

Q: How many fingers did you say you broke?

A: A couple.

Q: How long are you going to be in the cast?

A: That I don't know. Hopefully not too long, but we'll see. I'm going to take it day by day and next I'm going to do everything they ask me to do. We'll see where it goes.

Q: So, it's just a hand? Because you're in a sling.

A: It's the fingers. I can take it out, this is just here just to be here. It's just my fingers. It wasn't like it was my arm or anything crazy. Everything else is fine it's just my fingers.

Q: Did you fall off the thing you were on, or did you jam your fingers?

A: No, I didn't fall off. Basically, I fell on my fingers I should say. Like I said it was a freak accident. Nothing reckless was going on. The thing didn't flip over.

Q: Something fell on your hand you said?

A: Yeah, and this wasn't an ATV. It was actually a Can-Am. Which is like a bigger, you've probably seen a Can-Am before, it's just a bigger version.
Does anyone remember the NFL of yesteryear

when defensive players -- with broken hands or arms or wrists or fingers or something -- would be in a cast and the team would wrap it up so that the player looked like he was wielding a "club" out on the field. Wouldn't miss much time at all.

Oh... the good ol' days of NFL football. (:-)
Clearly there is information he does not wish to share with press.

That’s his right. I have driven an ATV hundreds of miles. I think I have a good idea about what happened. Bottom line though is that it was an accident. Knowing all the facts isn’t going to get him back in the game any sooner so move on and hope he can play sooner rather than later.

As my old man like to remind me, 'Ronnie Lott had his pinkie amputated so he didn't miss time!'
My initial reaction
SomeFan : 11/8/2022 6:38 pm : link
is that “it’s just a finger why can’t he play” but I guess it is a severe broken finger.
Now I read it and have concerns

he is done for the year.

Yep, which makes me wonder if it's more than a couple of broken fingers. A minimum of four games is a big blow to the team.
I don't understand
Archer : 11/8/2022 6:51 pm : link
Something doesn't make sense.
If you saw my fingers you would wonder what happened.

When I played football players wore metal cleats and every time you were on the ground your hand and fingers were a target.

I can't count the number of times that my fingers were broken.
Displaced with multiple fractures yet I never missed a game due to a broken finger.

Not just me but every player on the team.
Looks like the days are gone such as Larry Wilson
carpoon : 11/8/2022 6:58 pm : link
playing with casts on both arms because of two broken hands. He intercepted a pass in a Giants game with both casts on. The pampered players of today could never handle that.
From what I understand (minor asshat alert)
regulator : 11/8/2022 6:59 pm : link
he's lucky not to have lost any fingers. Surgery on the hand/fingers is very delicate and while everything went well, no doubt he is going to be on the shelf for a while to ensure everything heals properly. The key is to ensure no functional deficits going forward. Tendons, ligaments, nerves, etc. Obviously that's important for a DB who uses his hands and fingers extensively and can be expected to make plays on the ball.

I love the old-school Ronnie Lott refrain but of course it's not hard to understand why the Giants are playing the long game here. And I seriously doubt they'll withhold pay from a player they universally view as a foundational piece, even after doing something pretty stupid.

If he had your average broken finger, the type many of us have suffered playing sports, I’m sure he wouldn’t be on IR.

Sounds like he severely injured his fingers. How many of y’all who busted your fingers playing sports required surgery?

These tough guys would just decline surgery, rub a little tussin on it and get back on the field.

I've had 2 optional hand/finger surgeries to insert screws from football because with surgery it was a 4 week vs 8 week injury without. One with my left thumb and the other with my right pinky. I opted to have both done because each time it happened was early enough in the year to have hope and coming back to play, in both cases I was able to be back on the field same year.

I remember the time I picked my finger up off the field, stuffed it in my waste band, and went back to the huddle.

Gutsiest shit anyone had seen in 8th grade Pop Warner in decades.

I can imagine going under the knife means you really messed up your fingers. Which is what I was getting at.
Ronnie Lott Amputated Pinkie
ChrisRick : 11/8/2022 7:42 pm : link
Just an fyi on the real story of Lott having part of his pinkie amputated

Quote:
Lott Loses Part of a Finger for His Troubles

In 1985, the Niners moved Lott to safety.

This would provide an extra layer of protection in the defensive backfield and make opposing quarterbacks think twice before throwing anywhere on the field.

As San Francisco was slugging through a 10-6 season, Lott was pulling his weight with six interceptions, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and 104 total tackles.

During a game against the Cowboys in the last week of the season, Lott hit Dallas running back Timmy Newsome.

The impact crushed the tip of Lott’s left pinky finger.

Instead of seeking treatment and surgery for his finger, Lott wrapped it and played in San Fran’s Wild Card game against the Giants.

New York mercifully eliminated the Niners 17-3.

Once the season concluded, Lott consulted doctors about his finger.

The prognosis was bone graft surgery and rehab that would have meant a late start to the 1986 season.

Lott was against missing any playing time and chose instead to amputate the tip of his finger.

After the amputation was complete and the doctors took off the bandages, Lott was mortified by what he saw.

“I was trying to laugh it off, but I felt sick,” Lott told the AP in 1986 of first seeing the nub. “I tried to stand up, but I broke into a cold sweat. It was just a total shock. I thought, ‘Oh, man, I should have had the pin put in.’ … We are losing the compassionate side of sports. We’re becoming gladiators. If I ever become a coach, I hope I never lose sight of the fact that players are people. They feel. They have emotions. I could have all of Eddie DeBartolo’s corporations and it isn’t going to buy me a new finger. It has given me a new perspective on life.”

I was a corner in high school and in our state championship game we had a 5 point lead with time running out. Other team has the ball 4th and goal at our 6. I got picked at the LOS and my guy was crossing the middle of the field open at the goal line for the winning TD. I had no choice, so I bit off my own finger and threw it at him just as the ball came. Hit him right in the eye and he dropped the ball. We win.

I have never regretted that decision. I still have 9 other fingers.

As an Ole Miss fan, I vividly remember Patrick Willis' club hand.

Since McKinney is out for a few weeks,

who will be the on-field signal caller?
Anybody notice the transcript left out the entire chippy
FranknWeezer : 11/8/2022 10:25 pm : link
exchange with (I think) Jordan R.:
"how many times do I need to say that?"...
"but I don't get it, you said..."...
"ok; you don't have to get it; I'm saying; do you hear what I'm saying; do you hear what I'm telling you?- sight. seeing. tour. Next question."

Without the video we spotted on Twitter, we'd have been none the wiser about that exchange and how it came across from XMan.

Come on, Hanlon, don't hide the ball like that.

hey you not recording right?
If you ask a player multiple times if he was driving...
Jim in Tampa : 11/9/2022 10:46 am : link
and he doesn't give you a yes or no answer... it means that he was driving and doesn't want to admit it. (It's easy to say "no" if that's the truth.)

I tend to agree with you, but I suppose there could also be lawsuit-related reasons to dodge the question. If, for example, X is threatening to sue the driver and/or tour company (if they were responsible for his injury through some form of negligence) and nondisclosure is a term of settlement?

Or if one of his teammates was driving and he doesn't want to get anyone else in trouble? We know Ward is an ATV enthusiast (who has publicly offered to take teammates on rides, as you can see in his IG comments). I'm not saying Ward was the driver - I'm just saying that it's not completely inconceivable that X could have a reason beyond himself to not answer who was driving.
It sucks but I think you have to suspend him for the rest of the year

You get a week off and you go to Cabo for a small vacation. You take a ride on an SUV and get into a freak accident .... that is the story I read anyway.

I might have taken the same vacation and the same SUV ride?

oops meant ATV.

Why is it hard to understand that these guys are literally prohibited by contract from taking ATV rides? That's not a random oddity in the standard NFL contract language; it's specifically in there because of the elevated risk of injury that such activities represent.
