Changing surface of field for 2023? The Ledger says yes

mort christenson : 11/17/2022 11:53 am
The Ledger has an article (behind paywall so I only saw first paragraph) on how Met Life will be changing turf next year. Don't know more than that.

Is there a downside to this?

Or is it just cost.
they are quoting Julian Love on this too
gidiefor : Mod : 11/17/2022 11:55 am : link
sounds like the players convinced the team to change the field surface and there is a deal in place to do it before next season starts

Go back???

That all depends upon what year you were born. (:-)

Some of us would say they already went back!
Props to ownership

For listening to the players.
If they're going to grass...
JohnG in Albany : 11/17/2022 12:19 pm : link
and the first paragraph doesn't say that, I hope there's new technology because the last time they went to grass, it was a mess.

They are going to have to go to trays
Joey in VA : 11/17/2022 12:23 pm : link
Similar to AZ, and move out the grass during concerts and all that other junk otherwise it will be a mess in no time.
Don’t have access to the entire article
JoeyBigBlue : 11/17/2022 12:23 pm : link
But the first few lines don’t anything about grass. It just states that the current field turd was installed in May, 2020 and it has been met with poor reviews by players. They could be switching to a different type of field turf. We have to read the whole article to be sure.
If you google

"MetLife switching to grass" you can pick up the entire article.

Love states that due to the amount of events and 2 teams playing on the field, it may be determined that grass is not feasible and in that case, would convert to the "state of the art turf" instead. I am betting that is what will happen.

If you remember, they tried grass years ago with removable trays for warn areas and it was a total disaster. I think it's pretty unlikely grass will be the new surface but from what the players say, the "state of the art turf" will be a big improvement over what is there now.

Oh, and for STH like myself, you can bet a ticket price increase will happen to fund this conversion for 2023. Not complaining if it cuts back on injuries though.

The cost will downgrade giveaways to small Pepsis only.
I remember the last time they tried grass
GiantBlue : 11/17/2022 1:14 pm : link
It was basically painted mud by end of season.

Hopefully it is a synthetic turf that has better outcomes for the players. I am sure there are studies on the different turfs used.
There are different brands and makers of non-grass
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/17/2022 1:17 pm : link
Surfaces. It's not like astroturf where it's just rolled carpet and the only difference is the label.

There are different ideas and tech now.

You can probably bet on a ticket price increase even if they don't change the surface.

NFL teams aren't operating paycheck to paycheck. They aren't waiting for a season ticket revenue spike to fund a change to the playing surface in the same year.
Can't wait to see what happens next year

when the Giants are still one of the most injured teams in the league despite the field change. Then what will Giants players blame their *constant* injuries on?

Oh we'll find somebody or something, don't you worry about that!
What about when
Pete in MD : 11/17/2022 1:56 pm : link
Bon Jovi plays? All of those walkers and wheelchairs will tear up the field!

They can blame it on the practice field if they don't put the same surface there.
Based on this snippet from the article it appears they haven't
nyjuggernaut2 : 11/17/2022 3:27 pm : link
decided on what will take the current turf's place yet.

Quote:
“The Giants and MetLife are in the process of getting things done for next year,” Love told NJ Advance Media. “That turf will be changed. The stats have shown that we are on one of the worst fields in the league.”

The Giants were asked to comment on Love’s statement, but a spokesperson said it was a matter for the MetLife Stadium Company LLC, which did not respond to a request for a comment.

Love did not know exactly what surface the Giants and Jets will settle upon. He said his preference and the preference of almost all NFL players is grass.
