Rookie OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux may have just one sack, but DC Wink Martindale thinks “the kid’s playing great.” He’s doing what the Giants are asking. Loading up on the selfless stats. #giants
about how Wink's defenses didn't lead to high sack totals from edge defenders. It's not surprising that a rookie didn't break that trend. Wink clearly values a more versatile skill-set from the edge position.
But that 2nd quote explaining what he means by can-opener is great, really does seem like Wink is very high on Kayvon.

If you watch nobody abandons their gap. Sometimes he just has the Edge take an exaggerated arc upfield, just to take an area of the field away from the QB. Guys are moving to spots on the field the QB isn't used to seeing people.
They aren't just lining up and isolating Thibs in 1on1, 2-way go pass rushing situations. That's not the scheme.
Of course, this is why Wink's on record saying he'll take CB over DE. He is going to scheme pressure - he isn't asking his pass rushers to create on their own.
Sounds like Thibs is doing exactly what he's being asked to do.
He doesn't over pursue and get pushed too deep on his rushes, he holds his edge and doesn't do thinks that put him out of position.
IMO he is due for a break out sack game hopefully it's Thanksgiving day with the world watching.
The coaches evaluate players differently than the fans
That is why they are coaches. Sacks are overrated stat. They say a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous. BBI critics use a high bar for many of their opinions of our players. We are not talent evaluators.
RE: The point is that he is a threat to get to the QB.
Respectfully, it doesn't matter that he's doing better than the other Edges in his class. That may just mean we should have picked a different position cause the ERs weren't very good. What matters is what kind of pro he's going to be. As far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out. Despite what Wink says, if Thibs, despite everything else he does, ends up as a 4-6 sack a year guy, the team and the fans are not going to be happy.

Your response it just so silly. Calling someone a hater is where you go when you run out of arguments. I don't hate KT at all. I'm rooting for him. I'm just saying that between what I saw in college and now with the Giants he hasn't yet convinced me that he was worth the #5 pick. Here's hoping I will. I'm not denying it. Tae Crowder probably hustles on every play also. And no I'm not comparing them, just saying that hustle in and of itself doesn't make a star player

He hustles where, on the sideline? He’s hardly on the field for a reason.
KT’s hustle leads to plays in the run game as well, but I suppose he only has one pass rush move so he’s a bust according to the BBI faithful

If KT was leading the league right now with 10 sacks, would you still think sacks were overrated?
excuses (he's always being held) and predictions (the sacks will come and he's gonna be a great player). If you can look at the player he is today, and his production so far, and say to yourself that you're thrilled we took him at 5, God bless you. I can't. But I am hoping that in the not too distant future I will be able to post a thread titled "Bill in Ut eating crow on KT". And I promise I will if I should.
Bill, well the fact is he's held A LOT. That's just a fact. And I think he's having a good season sans the sacks. He's stout vs. the run & is seemingly all over the place. Let's also not forget...he has played 7 games. It is way too early to call him a bust or disappointment.

Okay. Then what about Sy? I gave ya two sources for a reason. By all means question what a coach says. When it's corroborated by someone who professionally evaluates talent in a way you and I cannot from a tv broadcast, that should give pause. Not only did he give you his evaluation, he also gave you performance context among his peers.

To be honest, I don't really get Sy's writeup. First off, Sy was not that high on Thibs before the draft either, iirc. But as to now, he didn't compare Thibs to the league in general, he only compared him to 2 other highly drafted rookies- Walker and Hutchinson. And his comments were basically how he is matching or outperforming them in pressures. Which could lead one to say that it just may not have been a very strong class for ERs. But then I looked on my own and see that Walker has 2.5 sacks and Hutchinson has 5.5 sacks. Why no mention of that, idk. Bottom line, you don't draft a guy at #5 to do the things that go unnoticed. You draft him to sack the QB. And hopefully that will come in time.

IDK what "had it out for" means at all. I readily admit that I didn't think he was a good enough pass rusher to be drafted at 5 and that he's done nothing this year to change that opinion. But I have no desire to be right about that, I'm a Giants fan, he's an important player on this team and I'm looking every week for the positive to prove me wrong.

I also, just off the top of my head, looked up the Bosa brothers. They had 9 and 10.5 sacks as rookies, so it's not like rookie ERs never have good sack numbers.

Ojulari, who Sy said Thibs is outperforming, had 8 sacks as a rookie.
There's things to like and things to improve on (setting up other moves if his initial ones don't work). What I'm not impressed by is Wink's defenses in general not getting a lot of sacks, particularly since the Giants typically stall out in the playoffs (one and done) if they don't have a defense that can generate more than 40 sacks in a season since 1981 (1989 and 1990 are the only years the Giants have had less than 40 and moved farther than the divisional round).

So is this different from Graham's defense?
Some people on here say he only has a speed rush
Other say he only has a bull rush
And he isn't sacking the quarterback
Think we trade him for a 2nd or 3rd round pick?

I think there was something in a thread about the All-22 in Jacksonville that said Thibodeaux was chipped by a tight end.
That being said, what's the point of drafting Thibodeaux so high if all he's supposed to do is two-gap and let somebody else through the door?

I also, just off the top of my head, looked up the Bosa brothers. They had 9 and 10.5 sacks as rookies, so it's not like rookie ERs never have good sack numbers.
Ojulari, who Sy said Thibs is outperforming, had 8 sacks as a rookie.
