A peek ahead at roster moves: Week 12 edition

Big Blue Blogger : 11/19/2022 6:00 pm
First, a quick recap of Week 11 transactions:

Date | Pos | Name / Transaction
11/14 | DB | Rodarius Williams - Activated from injured reserve
11/14 | OL | Devery Hamilton - Waived
11/14 | DB | Justin Layne - Waived
11/14 | DL | Henry Mondeaux - Signed to active roster
11/14 | OL | Will Holden - Practice squad contract terminated
11/15 | DL | Vernon Butler - Signed to practice squad
11/15 | OL | Devery Hamilton - Signed to practice squad
11/19 | OL | Shane Lemieux - Activated from injured reserve
11/19 | TE | Lawrence Cager - Elevated from practice squad (3rd)

That brings us to an abbreviated Week 12. Assuming no new, major injuries against Detroit, the week will begin with an unsurprising set of moves that amount to Jack Anderson and Lawrence Cager trading places:

Date | Pos | Name / Transaction
11/21 | OL | Jack Anderson - Waived
11/21 | TE | Lawrence Cager - Signed to active roster
11/22 | OL | Jack Anderson - Signed to practice squad

Cager is out of elevations and remains a key piece, at least until Daniel Bellinger returns. Anderson is a surplus OL now that Shane Lemieux, Matt Peart and Nick Gates are back. In a just world, Austin Calitro might go instead, but his salary is locked in.

I doubt Evan Neal will play against Dallas. Even if he does, his return won't necessitate a roster move, though he might relegate Peart or Tyre Phillips to inactive status.

There's no indication so far that Tony Jefferson or Azeez Ojulari will be activated next week. If a roster spot is needed for one of them, players on the bubble include Quincy Roche, David Sills, Marcus Johnson, and the ever-popular Austin Calitro. Ben Bredeson remains ineligible for at least another week.

FWIW, I think we'll see a defensive lineman (Butler? Anderson?) elevated next week. While the versatility of Jihad Ward and Kayvon Thibodeaux has helped, the iron-man act by Dexter Lawrence and Leonard Williams can't go on forever. Dallas will wear those big men out, especially on three days' rest.
Any idea about our safety?

That would be a nice get.
Giant John: I believe McKinney is ineligible until Week 14.

That would mean earliest he could return is the home game against Philadelphia on December 11th.

In theory, he could dress for the final five games, including the three head-to-head matchups against the current #1 and #2 seeds in the NFC. I don't think anyone is that optimistic, but it's possible. The good news is that a hand injury shouldn't prevent him from staying in football shape.
i expect Azeez, Jefferson, Cager (with a good showing)

to challenge for roster spots soon at least for the Commanders game after turkey day.

Mckinney you hope only needs 4 weeks.

i know they said Robinson was doubtful to make his way back but i wish they get an update on him. what is his knee injury exactly? its not an ACL/tendon thing - that would have been annoucned.

That looked like a minimum of 4 weeks. That wasn't a hairline fracture. I think his return would have to depend on a few other factors as well. I'd count him 50/50 at best to return.

Very curious to see what's next with Azeez, and hope for the last quarter of the season he can contribute.
Injuries, a miserable performance, and a short week shuffle priorities

The first move, pending only an MRI, is a sad one with long-term implications:
Date | Pos | Name / Transaction
11/22 | WR | Wan’Dale Robinson - Placed on injured reserve
11/22 | TE | Lawrence Cager - Signed to active roster

Although Cager dropped a two-point conversion attempt, he remains a better option in the passing game than Hudson or Myarick. He’s out of elevations, so he moves to the roster as Daniel Bellinger continues to heal.

Meanwhile, the loss of Robinson and Adoree Jackson creates an opportunity for at least one other practice squad member:
Date | Pos | Name / Transaction
11/23 | WR | Kalil Pimpleton - Elevated from practice squad
Pimpleton will return punts and back up Richie James in the slot. He might handle kickoffs too. Gary Brightwell has been meh in that role.

Jack Anderson remains on the bubble if additional roster space is needed, along with healthy scratches David Sills, Quincy Roche and Austin Calitro. TBH, the starting inside linebackers were so bad against Detroit that they may have revived Tae Crowder’s career, and it’s possible we might see Calitro in uniform again.
you left out safety

Seems like a reasonable chance we need at least one safety with Pinnock going to the hospital after the game yesterday.

Cager may be a guy whose individual skills never add up to the sum of the parts. But if Bellinger isn't ready and Miller isn't viewed as ready for a shot, might have no choice but to sign him.
Good point, Mort.

A second elevation this week might be Trenton Thompson or Terrell Burgess, assuming Tony Jefferson isn't ready to come off IR.
As expected, Cager replaces Wan’Dale Robinson on the roster.

Nick Vannett fills Cager’s practice squad spot. Like Vernon Butler last week, the Vannett signing is motivated by an immediate, pressing need. Expect him to suit up soon, especially if the team takes a cautious approach with Daniel Bellinger.

Jason Pinnock seems to be OK, so a move may not be necessary at safety. At WR/PR, I still expect Kalil Pimpleton to dress, though there are other options for backing up Richie James, whose knee injury does not appear overly serious.

Daboll identified a number of players as game-time decisions. We’ll get some clues at the deadline for elevations.
