Giants need an entire WR unit in 2023

Ben in Tampa : 11/20/2022 4:52 pm
I can't remember a unit so devoid of talent in the almost 30ish years I've watch this team. Is that hyperbole? I don't think it is.

The Robinson injury is brutal. You'd expect he was pencil'd in as the starting slot WR next season, but now a ACL Tear in late November means he's probably starting the season on PUP at best.

The Giants don't just need a #1 WR. They don't just need two receivers.. They need to rip the entire group out by the stem and replace it. It's conceivable they turn the entire WR roster over next year.

Schoen has a huge task in front of him. Insane.

I think they have their practice

squad in place though.
...gonna be fun
outeiroj : 11/20/2022 4:53 pm : link
trying to do that while replacing barkley and jones since everyone wants to replace everyone whenever a team struggles
I literally have no idea how peole watch NFL
Returning Video Tapes : 11/20/2022 4:54 pm : link
And not see how deficient we are. Slayton is maybe a top 100 guy. Odell is worth the risk just because he’s be our best WR.

Not sure he wants to sign with us after Wandale gettting his knee blown out by our turf
...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 11/20/2022 4:56 pm : link
Don't worry. Our WRs will get injured next year too.
They need Bellinger back
Bill in UT : 11/20/2022 4:56 pm : link
Slayton may be ok as a 2. Same with Robinson, but he may miss a lot of next year. But we certainly need a 1. I don't know if Golladay changed anything today or not. We'll see what the rest of the year brings
Does any vet QB sign here?
giantBCP : 11/20/2022 4:57 pm : link
DJ or otherwise? If we don’t bring Jones back on a franchise tag, I think we’re going to be left with a rookie or Taylor out of necessity.

I think this is the underlying reason that we’re looking to bring OBJ back.

He did not.
Fumble aside, I like Hodgins as a 4th WR
Anakim : 11/20/2022 4:57 pm : link
But yes, they need two outside WRs and now need a slot guy as well

Someone gonna give DJ a Carr like contract…gurantee that. Made no sense not to put him on 5th year option.
We'll
Giantfootball025 : 11/20/2022 5:02 pm : link
100% draft 2 wide receivers with our top 4 picks in rounds 1-3. Any of the top 5 I'm good with. Johnston, Adidison, Smith-Njiba ( my personal fav), Boutte, Downs.

Wide outs like Rashee Rice, Either Tenn WR, Parker Washington should be available in rounds 2-3. Wandale Injury sucks big time but he'll be back and he's a piece for the future it may help if he comes back and can be our 3/4th until he gets back into the swing of things.

In retrospect, Schoen’s biggest mistake was not signing Jones long term in the off-season. Forget the fifth year option. He could have gotten a great bargain, but he missed the boat.

This off season is going to be so much fun with what happens with Jones. If the Giants don't sign him its going to be real interesting what he gets in the market. My guess would be a two year deal.
Well there was that year

DJ will not be back. Joe Schoen pretty much guaranteed that by not taking the 5th year option. From a cost perspective it will never work out. Franchise Tag is not really an option at the 40+ or whatever it's expected to be.
Also DJ said in one of his recent pressers that they didn't talk contract at all over the bye week.
I agree with you - there will be a ton of teams in the market for a serviceable QB (12+ by my count) that will pay starter AAV but on a shorter term.
They actually need TWO WR units in 2023
David B. : 11/20/2022 5:16 pm : link
One unit to play, and one just for ACLs.
Slayton should be brought back
Breeze_94 : 11/20/2022 5:53 pm : link
He’s very undervalued around here. Also something to be said about having 4 years of rapport with DJ. And tbh, he may be the best veteran option they have as the FA market is weak at WR.

WDR- looks like he’ll be headed for PUP

Hodgins- kept around as a #5/#6. Assume he competes with Colin Johnson on the back of the roster.

Draft- they need multiple guys. A guy in round 1 to be the alpha since there aren’t any notable FA’s. Jordan Addison would fit this system well. I also LOVE Zay Flowers
WR; D(DL/LB/S);

Definitely need to draft one and trade for one.

Jalin Hyatt and Tyler Boyd
This is true.
Matt M. : 11/20/2022 6:24 pm : link
Not that it was much better with a healthy Robinson. But, at least he would have given us 1 guy. We now have 0 WRs guaranteed a spot on the roster next year. A number of these guys are not even likely to be here for camp. First round has to be WR. Second round might be WR. I wouldn't be shocked if we draft 3 WRs, plus a FA or 2.

not the line that's starting this year though, it's mostly young (Thomas, Neal, Gates, Lemieux, Ezudu). Just because Gettleman was a moron...
Definitely need WR1, WR2, WR3
BigBlue565358 : 11/20/2022 6:43 pm : link
Slayton is a WR4 at best

Underscores even more why we shouldn't take a quarterback in the first round. With all these injuries we're going to be picking closer to 20 than 30

Should still be in range for a stud wide receiver in the first round

Unfortunately this WR draft group isn't as strong at the top as the last few years

Slayton is a starting caliber Z receiver. He led the team in yards in 2019 and 2020 and will lead the team again this year (he already is).

I don't know what a "WR4" is.

We need a true big body X which is what Golladay is supposed to be. Hodgins has been a fine replacement X having been here only 2 weeks.

Wandale will return as the slot guy assuming he rehabs OK. I worry about his durability having missed a month at the beginning of the season and now the ACL. He may have a shorter career than Shep.
I tip my hat to Darius Slayton
RobCrossRiver56 : 11/20/2022 7:25 pm : link
He's doing the best he can and making the best of it.
Slayton is not a starter, he's a backup
BigBlue565358 : 11/20/2022 7:37 pm : link

Slayton is a good player
giantBCP : 11/20/2022 7:47 pm : link
His hands are questionable, but he’s a lot better than a “WR4”. It makes you question the staffs reasoning for burying him on the depth chart behind some scrubs for half a season.

Disagree completely. He's been the team's best receiver since 2019 and it's not even close. Backups don't lead the team in production for 3 years on their rookie contract. He would be the starting Z on half the teams in the league.
No he wouldn't

Slayton wouldn't start on most teams in the league.

Schoen has MANY strong points, character, experience, but sometimes he comes off like a rube, a hick from the sticks when it comes to personell, lick a country mouse trying to outsmart a city slicker who sometimes outsmarts himself instead.

In time, the NY environment will change this, but I believe there are and will be growing pains. He's a first time GM don't forget. experience in that role is something that he does, as a matter of historical fact, lack.

Being the exec officer ain't the same as being the captain. Same goes for Kafka. They will get better as they become more seasoned. Problem is it takes seasons to become seasoned, and experience to become experienced.

I can count 6 teams in the NFC alone where he would be an upgrade at the position.

After today he has more yards than our next 2 WRs combined and in fewer games.

I am really confused by what your definition of "starter" is and how you define a guy who has over 2,200 yards in 3.5 seasons a "WR4".

Why do you keep comparing Slayton to our other receivers? He had a good rookie season, sucked for 2 years, and now is the only halfway decent receiver on the team

Lol. His 2nd year was literally better than his rookie year. Now I'm convinced you don't watch much football.
Whoever they do at WR
VinegarPeppers : 11/20/2022 10:51 pm : link
They’ll likely all be on IR by mid season anyway.

We get Thibs, Azeez goes down for 10 games. We draft Neal, he’s down. Next season he’ll be 100% but Thomas will go down.

It’s just the way it is for the Giants. Cursed. Historically our top WRs always have short Giants careers. Steve Smith, Nicks, Manningham, Cruz….
