Observations about Detroit game & going forward

M.S. : 11/20/2022 5:19 pm

(1) First and foremost, no BBIer should be down about the beat-down the Lions put on the Giants today.

(2) Why? Because Coach Daboll, his staff and the Giants entire team have given us more enjoyment and excitement this season than any of us had a reason to expect.

(3) This current Giants team is never going to win when Saquon Barkley is stopped dead in his tracks and the team is 0-3 in the turn-over battle.

(4) The Giants had some strange calls go against them in the first half which certainly did not help matters any.

(5) Throw in the obscene amount of injuries and I am a little amazed that Detroit did not win by more.

(6) Going forward this season could be very rocky indeed for this team. Not only is their starting roster filled with back-ups and back-ups of back-ups…

(7) … but much worse IMO is that Seattle, Detroit (and Dallas to a lesser degree) have all shown the rest of the league how to manage the Giants: Just stop Saquon Barkley and your odds of winning go way, way up.

(8) As for “winning” going forward, I think the Giants will have a very difficult time reaching the 10-win mark, which would practically guarantee this team of making the playoffs.

(9) Coach Daboll is in a difficult spot right now. For one thing, he raised expectations so high through the first half of the season that — should the Giants fall flat on their faces now — Daboll will get a lot of the blame.

(10) IMO, that wouldn’t be fair to our first year Head Coach.

(11) But fair is fair, and if this team goes south and misses the playoffs, at minimum the Adoree Jackson return snafu is on Coach Daboll. He owns that and there’s just no getting around that.

(12) Go Giants.

the Jackson return issue. You can't play scared, you put your best players in position to make plays and win. He was the best option at PR. Injuries happen.
Be most pissed about the WDR injury. Another one thanks to the turf.
They've hit adversity. Lets see what Daboll and his staff do to try to make the team competitive! Most people were hoping for 8 to 9 wins. Think that's still possible.
No time for the defeatist attitude

Get ready for the next one. This is good for BD. Let's see how he handles it. He should be evaluated the same way going forward. It's the job description.

Adoree not being available at CB1 for over a month is not putting your best players in position to make plays and win. Punt returns are not game winning plays. They are extremely low EPA plays with an extremely high injury risk.
The refs today sucked

As just one example, Detroit got off two plays a full second after the playclock hit zero
To get to 10 they need to

Split with Commanders.

Win 1 out of 3 with Eagles/Cowboys.

Split with Colts/Vikings.

would have killed for a 7-3 start in August. This coaching staff has been turning chicken shit into chicken salad the entire season.

Our roster more similarly resembles the Texans than any playoff team that you can rattle off.

Manage expectations. Enjoy the overachieving wins and understand the losses that are coming.

This is a rebuilding team that has massively overachieved.

I was critical of Daboll regarding Adoree Jackson. 100%. I believe he made a huge error in that regard. And IMO he owns it for the rest of the year. Plain and simple.
We're allowed to vent after a terrible loss

We all know they've overachieved, we all know this is supposed to be a rebuilding year

We can know this and still be angry and frustrated about the game today
Right off the bat, #1 and #2 are BS
Matt M. : 11/20/2022 6:31 pm : link
That is exactly why we should be upset. The Lions were the lesser team, the road team, and have exactly 1 road win in years. This was a game a team with playoff aspirations has to win. I didn't expect it to be pretty. But, I did expect a win and I don't think that was unfounded.
As for Jackson, I don't think he got hurt because he returned a punt
Matt M. : 11/20/2022 6:33 pm : link
He got hurt because he was hit late and dirty while basically down.

did you miss how earlier today the Pats won on a punt return? Or how about the beloved Jackson return against the giants?

There is a reason the saying "3 phases to the game" exists and its because special teams is extremely vital to success

How often is a CB getting tackled after the whistle? Literally never.
He DID get hurt because of the punt return. It was a bad idea. This is why.

Maybe it happened exactly as you’ve described it. But IMO, that’s all besides the point. Adoree should have never been back there in the first place except to fair catch the ball. This is the same stupid Jason Sehorn mistake of yesteryear, and Daboll now has to wear it for the rest of the season.

Of course I talk about EPA per play and you bring up 2 extreme and rare examples of where a punt return creates a TD. The NE punt return for TD today is the first of the year. Teams punt an average of 3.7 times a game; that's a total of 118 punts a week. Through week 11 that equates to something like 1300 total punts give or take a few. 1 net TD. You can do the math on those odds.

Worth risking your CB1 for 1/1300 odds?

More specifically for the NY Giants, the last time the Giants returned a punt return for TD was in 2015. Including that one they have had 3 total PR for TD since 2000. That's an average of 1 PR for TD every 7 seasons. Again, do you like those odds to risk your CB1 for potentially the remainder of the year?
