Giants Run Defense This Season Has Allowed

M.S. : 11/21/2022 10:11 am

an average of 5.3 yards per carry. That's 31st in the NFL. Only the Chargers are worse at 5.5 YPC.

You would think with Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence at defensive tackle, that stat wouldn't be quite so bad. But consistently stopping the run game is not a 2-man effort. It takes all 11 defenders.

Yesterday, with Adoree Jackson and Xavier McKinney out of action, a lot of missed tackles in the secondary. If memory serves me right, some of them led to big third down conversions for Detroit.
This is where inferior ILB is a factor

I think with all the injuries this season, the biggest or most impactful might actually be to the rookie Beavers. He looked that good this summer.
Are Inside Linebackers
JoeyBigBlue : 11/21/2022 10:16 am : link
Are really really bad. Plus we have no depth on the D-Line. A recipe for a disastrous run game.
This is where i think Schoen has some blame
nym172 : 11/21/2022 10:17 am : link
you look at Howie Roseman, he recognized the problem from MNF last week and made signings to address it.

its clear the giants have no faith and rotation at DL depth....they have made little to no effort to address it.

Howie went out and signed Suh and Joseph and held the colts down to under 4ypc this week with Suh and Joseph playing 25-40% of the snaps.

Between allowing Adoree to be PR and not signing a dedicated KR/PR to help out your team, not addressing the DT depth with guys out there - i think Schoen has to take some blame.

The giants didnt even dress their max allowed game day active roster at 48 - they didnt even use their 2 PS elevation - at least give some young guy a reward its a game of attrition ....the giants are not getting resourceful.

you could have signed a vet K to the PS for the game and not allowed to gano out there with 4 IVs...just poor roster managmenet.
If we had NFL quality ILB’s it would be less
Rick in Dallas : 11/21/2022 10:19 am : link
Seriously we have the worst ILB group in the league
Jaylon Smith is great at making tackles 5 yards off the LOS snd terrible in pass coverage snd he is our best ILB… enough said

depth on the DL is poor as are the ILB's. Its been rough quite a bit stopping the run this year.

One thing they have done well is make some 1st and second down stops and then get off the field on third down. They let up some back breaking 3rd and longs yesterday. I remember one in the first half and it was in Detroit's territory (3nd and 12) that they converted and marched down the field.
Wandale and Sheppard were on the Giants turf

Beavers really would have helped

While the defense has been good,
Dave in Hoboken : 11/21/2022 10:32 am : link
I still feel like they're overrated to a certain degree. Teams have been running over and passing the ball all over this defense the past several weeks or so. Yesterday, the dam finally broke.

go look at the suh/joseph contracts - these are vet minimum signings - we are not asking for big contracts, just people who are vets who know how what they are doing .....

Bingo… like last year, this team can’t even afford to pay a full game day squad. The gross cap mismanagement of the Gettleman era continues to haunt the team. I’m sure Schoen would be happy to pull some LBs off the street if they were improvements over what we have… but then again we’ve been in that position before to disastrous results!

Unfortunately this is an issue that will not be resolved this season.

im not saying schoen is a bad gm just he should take some blame for not making some more moves....not using your PS elevation for a team thats going through attrition. i call it like i see it. if you dont like thats fine. address the point - what am i wrong here? this is not hindsight - many people on this site called for signing linval. many people on this site called for not using adoree and gettign a dedicated PR/KR....

Address the points where am i totally off base?

the Giants have 3 million in cap space -- and they did bring in players for the line - but they are value shopping this year incase you weren't paying attention.

I realize only instant gratification will do for you -- but get a pair and strap them on because you should be embarrassed at the sheer volume of what you've been posting

Please recognize we have enormous holes on this team. Playing above your talent will only last for so long and we are seeing it now. The Giants are forced to play a bend but don't break defense because of the severe talent deficiency across the board. Throw in our usual injury rate and it's going downhill fast. Letting teams run slows down the game and that is precisely the plan. It won't always work but it's our best shot right now.

I may not have this quite right, but on at least one run play, Jaylon Smith came up a few steps but found himself behind a NY defender, while there was a gap to his left that was more or less undefended. That was where the runner ended up for a decent gain. I believe Jaylon Smith needed to step into that gap even though -- technically -- it may not have been his assignment. He had to clear himself of his own team-mate and it just looked like he didn't do that.

I thought it was the other way round where a team can play bend but don't break if they have the players who can bring pressure and sack the quarterback with just four rushers.
How bad were our starting inside linebackers?
Big Blue Blogger : 11/21/2022 12:24 pm : link
Bad enough to revive Tae Crowder's career. McFadden might become a good player someday, who knows? Jaylon Smith looked horrendous.

Give the Lions' coaching staff some credit. They exploited every weakness, and they seemed to know where Smith was going before he did.

That's what happens
Doubledeuce22 : 11/21/2022 12:39 pm : link
when you have arguably the worst ILBs in football. We all knew this team had holes all over it going into this year. People should really be ecstatic that the team is 7-3 right now with no WRs, ILBs, or CBs.

The issue with us stopping the running game is not our DL, its the LB's. Signing Suh doesn't help. The DL takes up the blockers, theoretically freeing up the ILB's to make tackles (like Martinez last year). I say theoretically because we can't do it. They pick the wrong whole, getting beaten by TEs or others, etc.
