Next season’s decisions

gmanfromgland : 11/21/2022 6:14 pm
I rarely post on this site but I enjoy reading the discussions about my favorite football team. This season has been very enjoyable for me, but I can’t help but think about all of the decisions our new management has to make at the end of this season.
With important players like Saquon, Daniel J, and Dex in the last year of their contracts can we afford to sign all three and still address our lack of quality and depth at many positions?
When you see Cowboys getting a running back like Pollard in the 4th round, should we invest millions in giving Saquon a new contract?
Do we franchise Jones and give him another year, lock him in long term or let him go into free agency?
Can we let Dex walk away after his breakout year?
How do you see our new GM and head coach handling these personnel decisions?
Dex Is On 5th Year Option

In 2023, right?

My 2 Cents

I would do whatever it took to bring back Dex. I would also try to sign Jones to a reasonable contract. I do not think we should re-sign Saquan. Yes, I realize he has been the majority of the offense this season but the price tag will be too high and his injury tendencies are too great. I think with an improved O-line and WR's, next years offense won't be as reliant on Barkley. We can get good production from an RB not taken in the first round.

Agreed...we need Jones more then Barkley...

Correct. He’s back in next year for a little over 12 million. I was a year too early on Dex.

He is the guy that I would work on an extension with now to free up money this year. I really want to see us make major strides next season and we need serious additions in the play maker positions.

They will probably tag Barkley

Jones more than SB based on what? When teams shut down the running game (Seattle and Detroit), this team is dead in the water. There's zero evidence, throughout his entire career, that DJ can lead anything.

Tag Saquon, even if just to trade him. Offer DJ a team friendly deal ($12-15 million per year), and if he declines, let him walk. DJ isn't worth the franchise tag, or anything near it.
The key piece of the Giants future is Danile Jones.

Without him us fans have to sit through years of waiting to see if a rookie develops, or even worse, a parade of used up qb's! Jones is the key! Dexter Lawrence is the force in the middle of the what is becoming a very good defense, he too is a key player the Giants have to keep.

his weekly checks are only 127k, extending him doesn't do much for cap relief this year, maybe enough weekly to sign a PS guy to the roster but not much else.

With Daniel Jones we get yo sit through more sneaking by 4th place schedules, 20 points per game, dink and dunk, run heavy, offenses, and hoping to sneak into the playoffs. Dream big!
I love SB but
mpinmaine : 11/22/2022 1:58 am : link
do not think the Giants should pay for him going forward.
I see him doing nothing against Dallas,

could be, and hope to be dead wrong.

As for Jones. , despite a terrible game in my view Sunday, I am still unsure. I think they should run him more, not sure why they didnt Sunday or in previous weeks, it was working.

Read somewhere the franchise tag for QBs is set at $45M next year

My prediction: Giants sign BOTH Jones and Barkley for the price of the QB tag.

Jones gets $30-$33M and Barkley gets $12-$15M.

Schoen and Daboll have come to us from Buffalo, where they experienced first hand how a darn good quarterback elevates a team. You have to look past all the public utterances and wonder. I can't help thinking they want a better QB than Jones, but I can't see the way to get to one that doesn't mortgage the future. It's possible we stick with Jones because of that, but I just don't believe it's what Schoen or Daboll want to do.
The options are limited if we go the free agent route. Do the 49ers keep Garoppolo? He would cost some.
I get that we’re all down on this team
Breeze_94 : 11/22/2022 12:39 pm : link
After Sunday. They’ve won 7 games with half of their starters missing significant time.

The 4 key guys I’d look at resigning

DJ - IMO this isn’t a hard decision. Just a matter of logistics. What will the price tag be? I don’t see the Giants being in position to draft his replacement. Too many teams looking for a QB this off-season. I also don’t think DJ wants to leave this situation. Daboll and Kafka have helped him grow tremendously- he finally has stability- why would he want to go elsewhere?

Saquon- he is the heart and soul of this team. He wants to be a Giant. Another no brainer.

Love- he wants to be here and speaks highly of the org. He’s one of the most valuable players on the defense, a leader in the locker room, and only 24. Another no brainer IMO.

Slayton- he won’t command a huge deal, and I don’t see a guy in the FA pool I’d rather have. Also a young player still and seems to finally have put it all together.

After those 4, there’s a few guys- Ximines, Moreau, Ward, Breida- that I would love to have back if the price is right.

Assuming that everything above takes up most of the Giants cap (even after cutting KG). They maybe have enough to fill 1-2 holes with mid level FA’s. They also have key pieces and young depth who will be back in the mix after injury (Ojulari, McKinney, Neal, Bredeson, Bellinger, Aaron Robinson, Beavers, Davidson) and 11 draft picks (including comp picks).

I think they’ll be in good position to restock and upgrade at WR, LB, CB, IOL, DL through the draft. Continue building a young team that will gain additional flexibility to re-sign key pieces (Dex, AT, McKinney) as some of the dead money and big contracts come off the books in 2024 (Adoree, Leo IMO won’t be here much longer as they were both from previous regime and will be pushing 29-30 at the end of their contracts)
