Adoree Jackson's Injury

LTIsTheGreatest : 11/22/2022 10:30 am
really infuriated me becuase it did not have to happen. You mnean he was their only other option to return punts since they were afraid to send Richie James back out there? It was a cruel reminder of the time in preseason when they used Jason Sehorn to return kicks against the Jets and he ended up tearing his ACL on a kick return and missed the whole season. Even though it was many years ago, you should learn from past mistakes especially one as daunting as that
thanks for this

Get over it. It's football.
No Monday morning QB here

Never liked the idea and questioned it to the very last minute that the kicker punted and NO, I didn't jinx it !!!

From what I can tell, the BBI community is roughly divided in half between those who say "you can't coach scared" and those who say "it was a big mistake."

The "you can't coach scared" crowd is simply wrong. And here is what Sy'56 said about the topic:

"If NYG wanted to put a premium playmaker in the return game, why not put Saquon Barkley back there? Because you don’t want him getting hurt. Then why put Adoree’ Jackson, who in my opinion was the most important player on defense, in that role? This coaching staff has been amazing from the start and Daboll is in the running for Coach of the Year. But that was the wrong move and they’re going to pay for it."
It's a fair criticism
AcesUp : 11/22/2022 10:37 am : link
And hopefully one this young staff learns from. It was a bad gamble. I can't see how that risk is worth more than using another roster spot to grab a sure-handed guy off the street if that's all the staff wanted. If you need a play late in the game, sure throw Adoree back there but in the first half of a non-divisional game in November it was not good risk management. Bad gamble.
Agree he shouldn't be returning punts.

But how about some of these guys sac up for once and not get injured? We've only led the league in injuries since 2009. Can these guys stay healthy for once? Really asking for that much?

Already being hurt is what truly compounds this situation and makes it even more of an awful decision.

It was a poor decision,
Simms11 : 11/22/2022 11:04 am : link
Dabs is certainly not risk averse and Jackson has had a lot of success returning punts at USC, however, in hindsight it may cost us a post-season berth. I personally would have put James back there again. I think he learned his lesson. I recall Dave Meggett dropping punts and Parcells pissed, but they kept putting him back in there and he turned out to be one of the all-time great Giant PRs.

I specifically keep around a backup with 80+ KR/PR ability. Giants can't find one of those with our plethora of bottom tier WRs and RBs who don't play a lot?
Sehorn ran back punts and kickoffs in college
GeofromNJ : 11/22/2022 11:09 am : link
and begged Fassel to let him run back kickoffs during preseason to show the coach how valuable he could be. Fassel hesitated, but finally relented. Jackson also ran back punts in college, but he didn't beg for the job to replace James. Daboll should have assigned the job to a sure-handed player rather than somebody he thought could change field position.
Arguably Sehorn decision was more tolerable
Spiciest Memelord : 11/22/2022 11:12 am : link
since it was preseason and Fassel was trying to get him into the groove rather than panic throw him into the lurch with something he has don't since college.
It's awful
Matt123 : 11/22/2022 11:32 am : link
My thoughts on it were summarized well by Bobby Skinner: the risk/reward didn't make sense. What was the upside?

I also found Papa and Banks postgame interesting, how strongly they were trying to defend Daboll. They struggled, one of them said something like there are teams that have running back by committee and risk one of those important running backs.

Doesn't have to be season ending to end the team's season.

That's more an indication of why Jackson was back there in the first place. There really aren't other great options on the roster.

Which is why,in the 2+ weeks since the Seattle game, not one FA was brought in for a tryout as a PR? If James wasn't the answer, why wasn't someone else brought in?
Bad move. I might have felt differently if Jackson had a history of

Success as a punt returner at Tennessee, but he didn’t. Less than 10 yards per return and multiple fumbles.
IMO the risk was not worth the reward
arniefez : 11/22/2022 3:14 pm : link
CB is a thin position for the Giants to begin with, Jackson was having an excellent season and has a history of missing games with injuries. This is not a 2nd guess. It was a poor choice.

Richie James back there again?

The talking heads are having a field day with this.

Either get rid of the kicking game or acknowledge that you need players there.

In Week 10, I'm sure the options were endless
Some of the best return men in NFL history were star position players

A good coach puts his players in the best positions to help the team win. It's football with risks but good coaches don't coach scared because of that risk.
