Duggan - Do Giants have shot to upset Cowboys?

US1 Giants : 11/22/2022 11:05 am
Quote:
The Giants’ offense has been limited all season, but the creativity that was sprinkled in has been absent recently. The Giants found success with running back Saquon Barkley in the Wildcat, but that has only been used once in the past four games. The Giants have also gone away from the multi-tight end sets that were successful earlier in the season, which could be partly related to Bellinger’s absence.

Cowboys 31, Giants 20

The Vikings were 8-1. They are a good team and Dallas destroyed them. Pollard and Elliott will have a field day against the depleted Giants Dline, unfortunately.
In my opinion

No
Zero chance
pjcas18 : 11/22/2022 11:28 am : link
they should save the time and money involved with flying to Dallas and just forfeit.

Give John Madden turkey legs to the media for stepping in and stopping this debacle before it happens.
I just hope the team
eric2425ny : 11/22/2022 11:35 am : link
makes it out of this game with no additional injuries. Jones was running for his life the last time they played these fucks.
Not likely....however...
Drewcon40 : 11/22/2022 11:39 am : link
some of these "predicted blow-outs" do not always follow the script. If the Giants can hang around the 1st half, you never know - we could still have a shot in the 4th quarter. The talent and who we are dressing will definitely be a factor against us but they still have to play the game.

I wouldn't bet on it but the game still needs to be played.
If DAL has multiple turnovers in Giants territory
Jim in Forest Hills : 11/22/2022 11:41 am : link
and the DL sacks Prescott a ton and they find a way to stop Pollard.. maybe.
Oddly, I have an optimistic vibe
Matt M. : 11/22/2022 11:43 am : link
First, I think this could be a game Dallas is looking past given their arrogant coach and owner and the current health status of the Giants. Second, I really trust this coaching staff. Daboll and Kafka have been making chicken salad out of chicken shit all season on offense. Why not another week.

I expect more 2 back sets to keep Dallas guessing. I also expect more play action passing to start. This would, hopefully, open things up or leave Jones with more opportunities to run once he's outside the pocket. Either way, the right gameplan can attack the aggressive Dallas D with Barkley and Breida and some creativity.

On D, it isn't going to be easy. Again, I don't know why, but I have been feeling this is the game KT busts out finally. If they get in Dak's face, A LOT, they have a shot.

They need to play a near perfect game and force Dallas into mistakes. But, I really think we have a shot.
I wouldn't count us out...
Johnny5 : 11/22/2022 11:46 am : link
... not based on what I have seen from the staff so far. So... nothing will surprise me either way. However, with our injuries right now? If I was a betting man (I'm not), I am taking Dallas at home in a HUGE rout of the NY football Giants. I am prepared to be a very pissed off fan on Thursday... lol

Matt - great point, this is something I keep coming back to. Daboll and staff are going to have to deal with adversity and this is a great opportunity. I am looking for "culture changing" games and for the first time in awhile (this year), I don't feel like a L is inevitable.
They need to be plus three in turnovers

Our only chance to win...
bw in dc : 11/22/2022 11:54 am : link
is if Dallas is in a very giving mood on Thanksgiving. If they turn it over at a higher rate, which isn't impossible, we can hang around.

And I believe Dallas comes into this game having lost three in a row on Thanksgiving. So, there are some interesting variables...
Chance akin to the Saudis beating Argentina
Sec 103 : 11/22/2022 12:11 pm : link
oh wait!
The issue is, Dallas is really good at running the ball
mikeinbloomfield : 11/22/2022 12:14 pm : link
and the Giants just gave up how many rushing yards to Detroit?

We won't be able to get them off the field because its always going to be 2nd and 3 or third and one. Which opens up the passing game, which they may try to take advantage of anyway because everyone is hurt.

On the bright side, we get a 'mini-bye' to get some of the OL guys back. The Commanders game is a must-have.
The Cowboys looked great on Sunday
Breeze_94 : 11/22/2022 12:21 pm : link
The Giants did not.

The Giants are injured, the Cowboys are mostly healthy.

The Cowboys run the ball well- the Giants cannot stop the run.

So the eye test tells me there is about a 10% chance the Giants can win this game. The funny thing about the NFL is any team can win any game- while I’d be surprised, I do have a funny feeling this is a bit of a classic “upset” game.

The injuries are brutal, but the keys to the Giants offense (SB, DJ, AT) are all in place. Defensively, I’m worried about the secondary - but outside of Lamb, the Cowboys don’t really have any WR threats. The Giants need the defensive front (Leo, Dex, KT, Ximines, Ward) to show up in a big way- both against the run and as pass rushers.

My prediction is Dallas 31, Giants 16. But a few breaks, standout performances from their stars, and sloppiness from Dallas on a short week- and perhaps the Giants can win this game
I think
Les in TO : 11/22/2022 12:22 pm : link
It will be close for three quarters but the cowboys pull away in the fourth and the final is around 26-13
Of course there's a chance, these are professional athletes

If Saudi Arabia can beat Argentina, the Giants can defeat the friggin Cowboys.
Dallas lost to Green Bay
jvm52106 : 11/22/2022 12:26 pm : link
and the world was coming apart. They beat up Minnesota and they are world beaters now. Minny was coming off two big emotional efforts, one that went to OT and on the road. They were due for a letdown and when it happened, it happened completely. I wouldn't crown Dallas anything yet.

All the pressure is on Dallas right now. We are not supposed to win and probably not even be in it. The longer the game goes and stays close the bigger the pressure will be on Dallas. I am hoping we open things up a bit. Go up tempo, take some chances, some trick plays and who knows...
Let's not start Neal

Using that as an example though, we’d need some serious breaks go out way, some lucky bounces, officiating, and the turnover battle to go massively our way. That was like a perfect storm of things that happened to make that happen. We ain’t winning this unless we get some turnovers with a no name secondary and pressure that has been missinf from the edge.

Danny Kanell : 11/22/2022 12:55 pm : link
The defense is gonna have to play lights out and pressure Dak all day. And the line is going to have to give Jones time. If both of those things happen, we have a shot.

I'll also take Daboll over McCarthy every day of the week.

Obviously looks daunting but it's the NFL. Every week has crazy outcomes that no one expects.

both teams are going to try to run the ball a lot.

Dallas has a lot of advantages in both personnel and being home on short rest.

I think BD is going to really play up the underdog role and I think the team is going to be fired up to play not wanting to get embarrassed on what may be one of the biggest TV on Thanksgiving ever.

Can the Giants achieve the blueprint and win in the 4th?

30 or more carries for over 4 ypc.
Defense plays better in red zone and limits to FG's.
Win turnover battle.

I left out hold the team to 20 or less (which has been part of the blueprint) as I think this may be too tall a order.

So the Offense will need to get over 25 points imv.
Win the turnover battle.

Giants have scored over 25, once this season. Scored over 25, twice last season. Tall ask, my friend.

GMen72 : 11/22/2022 3:09 pm : link
DJ is going to have to win this game. Dallas will load the box and make DJ beat them. The Giants will also have to get off to a hot start, and most likely, a lead. If the Giants fall behind, and Dallas knows they're passing, DJ is in trouble. With a lead, the Giants can try to establish a run game and milk the clock.
In order to win this game
Tuckrule : 11/22/2022 3:48 pm : link
It’s no penalties. No turnovers. And we’ll need a few trick plays on offense to get chunk yards. That’s the only way to win. We can’t beat them straight up.
On any given Sunday still applies, so of couse they can
steve in ky : 11/22/2022 3:54 pm : link
It won’t be easy and probably need to create a turnover or two, protect the ball themseves and the D will have to bend but not break and limit them to FG’s
.
Banks : 11/22/2022 7:02 pm : link
We are so banged up everywhere I don't know how we keep this close. Dj will have to be near perfect and the defense will have to play way above their current talent level. I fear our weakened oline is just gonna get their ass kicked in all phases
I just don't see it
Giants86 : 11/22/2022 7:08 pm : link
banged up. Cant stop the run, lack of a pass rush and losing players on an already thin roster. We are going to struggle to win more than 1-2 more games I am afraid.
I would have signed on the dotted line for 8-9 this season.
But after sitting at 7-2, and now 7-3, I really want to see us make the playoffs. Im getting older LOL.

I feel the same way. Cowboys came off their best win of the season. Giants off their worst loss. Short week. Giants are underdogs. You never know.

I’m not sure what happened but the creativity that we all saw and loved earlier in the season has completely disappeared in recent weeks. This looks more like the Joe Judge offense than the offense from earlier in the season. I was hoping the bye week would get things back on track after self scouting but they’ve only gotten more conservative

+1. I see Kafka getting a lot of credit but this offense looks very stale to me. They either hand it to Barkley or run the horizontal flood concepts to scheme someone open. To me, it seems they just don't have faith that the OL will hold up in pass pro w/the WRs/TEs able to get open downfield in 1on1 situations. So it's constant floods and trickery.

I just can't bring myself to think they are limiting the scheme because of Jones. We've seen him pocket pass. That isn't the issue.

Have not liked his 1st half offense all year. They are protecting something or everything on the offense and it has lead to Barkley being worn out.
BTW
mittenedman : 11/23/2022 9:50 am : link
I don't think we have a chance unless the Cowboys completely piss the game away.

Traveling there without any real practice time, with the ridiculous injuries, is a joke. Barkley was terrible last week. And I can only imagine the Cowboys will have the refs in their pocket for their national TV extravaganza.

It feels like a blood bath.

And then we possibly right the ship the following week, after the 10-day layoff.

It's almost like a kid playing Madden that discovers a play he really likes and just keeps using it over and over. McAdoo was like that with the shotgun inside handoff and the slant/flat.

Sure, Jones is good at the play. But you can't just keep calling it over and over. In his defense, the same excuses for Jones apply to Kafka: there are realities/consequences of having such lousy skill players. They are easily covered and they don't make plays. And when the pocket collapses so easily when you drop back, there isn't much you can do but constant roll-outs.
I think the real question is if the Giants cover

where I had less optimism. Given the injuries and the limitations of talent on our team....I think we are going to get destroyed.

I could see DJ getting sacked and knocked out of the game and season by the end of the 1st quarter. The OL has completely regressed and we look like the same team as the last few years again.

Sure, but Minny was a weak 8-1, with a barely positive point differential (which is now negative). And Dallas lost to a mediocre GB team only a week earlier, so I would pump the breaks on fluffing them up too much. Last I checked, Mike McCarthy is still their coach.
Reality check says no, but I say yes
Matt M. : 11/23/2022 8:13 pm : link
Why? For the very reason that makes it illogical. Nobody, outside of the Giants locker room thinks they have even a remote chance. That makes them dangerous, especially when Jones and McCarthy are so damn arrogant and the Giants have a better coaching staff.
This would be a solid 8 upset on

Against them at nearly full strength, Jones was under duress all day. Minus 3 of those starters, minus everyone else and you people think we have a shot? No, no we don't. If we lose by less than 30 I'll be pleasantly surprised.
