from the Texans game, they started using him in a different set of routes than he was previously running. Slayton wasn't great catching the ball over his shoulder so he's been getting more routes where he doesn't have to "track" the ball as much.
Slants, rubs, drags etc... have been added in to take advantage of his speed rather than the "go deep" strategy Garrett had with him.
i've been tracking this since they started it earlier this year, the historical is very interesting even though they only publicized the model this year. i think while this methodology is interesting and certainly will surface great players on an individual level it also surfaces scheme efficiencies.
for example, you may not realize this but Shurmur's offense seems like it was very YAC friendly having both rookie year slayton and golden tate in the top 8. even Engram was graded well at 42nd overall.
garrett's offense seemed extremely yac-unfriendly (all the comeback routes) which is there was likely so much regression from all involved. engram, slayton especially.
daboll's offense has seemingly been able to bring back the yac and also helped get slayton open more. those crossing routes the last several weeks have become a staple (so much so ill bet aaron glenn had that hutchinson play prepared).
back to slayton individually though, he definitely has the athletic talent to make big plays - he simply needs to keep getting better at catching the ball.

only so much you can do with routes. He bobbles passes coming into his chest when he's standing still.

His hands are never going to be confused with Tory Holts, but he's much better catching the ball when he doesn't have to track it.
body catches and juggle a lot of balls, which of course causes drops. A lot of our receivers have the same problem. He's been in the league for almost for almost four years. if his hands were going to improve they likely would have by now.
If he is one of the top 5 receivers in the league and our coaching staff couldn't figure that out until October that does not say much about their talent evaluation.
Receiver in the league. He’s getting open a lot and has been great after the catch (probably skewed heavily from the Texan game), but there’s also a lot of areas he needs improvement.
He has his share of good plays only to have a few ah shit plays. He’s the #1 now, but really is probably no better then a #3 or 4 on most teams.
I think he’d be a very good 3 too. His drops are an issue but probably not as bad a lot of #3s around the league. He’s probably in the top half of #3s because of his YAC skills.

Yea sorry. That’s you just making shit up. He’s been dropping slants and bobbling those also. It’s not “tracking” it’s his hands. It’s called being inconsistent. You can’t teach hands. I guess engram was used on the routes as well.
He looks like a legit wr now. Still doesn’t have great hands or even good hands but he can certainly play. His weird career arch makes more and more sense if you attribute 20-21 to the obvious problems at HC and everywhere else, and early 22 just to a new system, player and staff finding their comfort zone.
Slayton is underrated. Not a WR1, but he's a solid WR2 and he makes plays.
And he dispels this notion that we don't have any skill players available for Jones. Over 80% of his catches go for first downs. That has to be close to top of the league...?

I like Bitey but you are right, he dropped an over the shoulder this week and he's not running slants at all, he's running deep crosses and digs. He's inconsistent catching the ball, that's usually one of two things: mental hurdle or someone who doesn't know he has a vision problem. Catching the Football is not a physical thing if it's easy drops. You can fix that with repetition. What you have trouble fixing is mental things and undiagnosed vision problems.

The Wandale injury really sucks because I thought they complemented each other pretty well.

My brother and I were talking about this. Only answer is he must've gotten himself into Daboll's doghouse very early on.
Keep in mind also that teams weren't exactly beating down his door for his service, either.
My guess is drops and learning the new offense. The latter is much better so they trust him (and need him) to play more.

Maybe he's doing so well now because of how DaBoll handled him early on.

Also, I think he only missed a couple of games to start the season.
