Visiting NYC and wondering about recommendations for steak houses besides Peter Lugers. Went there on our last visit but looking for something different. Recommendations please and thanks.

I'm a big DelFrisco's fan

it's expensive, but the food is great and it's got the glitz and glam of Manhattan. Everyone should do it at least once, IMO.

Also love Strip House. Different vibe. Dim lighting, more of a speakeasy-meets-gentlemens-club ambiance.
I have never had

a bad meal at Sparks and the history interests some people. I just think of them like Peter Lugers - a professional steak house - and you can use a credit card.

lately my go to is Delmonicos Kitchen (Dk restaurant as it's now known) their ribeye is something I wake up some night's with my mouth watering thinking about.

they have a king crab mac n cheese that is worth the trip to NYC alone.

so many good steakhouses in NY.

72 West 36th Street.

Love this place!

From Wikipedia:
Keens Steakhouse (formerly Keen’s English Chop House) is a steakhouse restaurant located at 72 West 36th Street (between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue) in the Garment District in Manhattan, New York City.[1] The restaurant houses more than 50,000 clay smoking pipes, making it one of the largest collections in the world.[2] The establishment is also famous for their renowned mutton chops. The restaurant was founded in 1885 by Albert Keen in Herald Square, what was then the Theater District.[3] It is also the only surviving establishment of the former district. [4]
A 1954 New York City tourist guide described Keen's as, "An historic and unusual inn type restaurant, featuring English mutton chops steak and roast specialties; seats 350 in several dining rooms, with old English decor. Home of the Pipe Club; bar; no entertainment. Open lunch and dinner daily, except Sunday. Moderately expensive."[5]
Patrons were given the opportunity to store fragile clay pipes at the restaurant so as to not risk breakage during transportation. The membership roster of the Pipe Club contained over 90,000 names.

When you start a thread you have to CHOOSE at the top either the default (Football Thread) or the other option (Non Football Thread).

You can't just write "nft" at the beginning of your first post without selecting "Non Football Thread" because it will still be considered a football thread by BBI's search function.

I point this out for no other reason than to be helpful, because I've seen a number of good "NFT" threads get deleted by the mods, because they were not actually designated as a Non Football Thread.

4 Charles Prime is incredible but very very difficult to get a rez. Very small place but tremendous restaurant.

Keens, Wolgangs, American Cut, Old Homestead are all great.
Keens is my current favorite in Manhattan

Everything about Keens was great.

Just went to Gallaghers last week. Really overrated. Can't recommend it.

My feeling on steakhouses is that if you're paying anywhere between $50-$65 for a steak, they're ALL going to be great, and more or less comparable. Steakhouses, IMO, live or die, sink or swim on how well they do the SIDES. The SIDES are the true differentiator. And the service. Gallaghers steak was great, but the sides were lame, the cocktails weak, and the service was appalling considering the prices.

Peter Luger is still good, but they're resting on their laurels, and they're really no better than the other good places.

Went to Wolfgangs 15+ years ago and remember it being very good, but that's a long time ago, so take that for what it's worth.

That’s my only beef with Keens, they don’t have a Mac and cheese side. Their sides are great though.
Peter Lugers

Went to the location on LI a couple of months back and it was awful. Dirty inside, the waiter treated us like he was doing us a favor. Steak no better than any of the other places mentioned above and the sides were meh. Don't go here.
I went to Keens for the start of my bachelor party, so a while ago
mikeinbloomfield : 10:14 am : link : reply : Delete
Loved it. Everything was old school, including the service. They did a really good job of getting us comfortable and set up for the craziness later. Heck, I liked just sitting at the bar shooting the shit with the bartender.

Agree with most of this, especially that the steak is all very comparable. Good service, sides and drinks are the real differentiators.
Was at Lugers Saturday night

In Williamsburg. Great meal. It’s my go to place
I recommend

going to a place that is unique to NYC or at least is their original location. Keen's has been on my list for a while, Old Homestead, Smith and Wollensky's, and Sparks.
Keens - no brainer

It’s so classic, if you’ve never been you have to go.

New York strip, wedge salad with blue cheese…..one or two sides (if with a group)….this will be the best most tender and tasty steak you will ever have!
Del Frisco's, American Cut, Striphouse, Sparks
JonC : 11:29 am : link : reply : Delete
Old Homestead ... tough to go wrong. I've not been to Keen's before.

Dylan Prime is sadly missed.
Bonus, if you go to Spark's
JonC : 11:31 am : link : reply : Delete
you can lie down on the sidewalk and re-enact the Castellano hit.
Gallagher’s is also a good steakhouse.....

They're all good, I do miss Sammys down the Bowery

I am sure there are a bunch of drunk people who do that
Would be kinda funny to watch though
If you'd like to try something a bit different.....

.... than the classic spots like Wollenskys, Keens, and Old Homestead (which are all wonderful), I recommend A smallish Argentinian steakhouse on East 6th Street in the East Village called Buenos Aires. Their entrana (skirt steak) with homemade chimichurri is out of this world. Also try the provoleta. Buenos Aires isn't cheap, especially if you order wine, but it's cheap compared to a place like Luger's or Keens.

excellent steak. Ribeye, wagyu, etc.

It's satisfied some very picky eaters I know.

Pricey, but lives up to the hype.
Word of warning about Del Frisco's for out-of-town visitors:
Big Blue Blogger : 2:03 pm : link : reply : Delete
The upselling is relentless. It's bad at all of these places, but Del Frisco's is the worst I have experienced, and our department used to go there regularly.

I have no problem telling a server to shove the premier cru Pomerol and the tri-level deluxe silver seafood platter with double crabmeat up his @ss; but saying "no thanks" can be awkward when you're ostensibly treating family/friends/colleagues to a splurge. The staff at Del Frisco's are trained to read that situation and take maximum advantage.

That said, the food is good. Not $400/person good, but good.

is another good call.
Roccos will treat you like family

IE if your going with 4 people- theyll portion apps out for you - guide you in right direction for main course sizes/order, and most likely give you desert on the house. Then you can go to the eagles bar next door after ;).
Peter Luger sucks
kcgiants : 11/23/2022 5:54 pm : link
They only sear the top of their steaks not both sides.
I went there about four years ago and sent the steak back to have them sear both sides. What other steakhouse serves their steaks seared only one side...nobody only them. I have never gone back since then. I've eaten at almost every steakhouse in NYC except any new establishment since covid and I like Keens the best but to each their own.
Read the NY Times review which states the same about the searing/crusting of the steaks plus Lugers steaks are unflavorful.

There's a fire wall for NY Times link I attached

but just google "do Peter Luger sears both sides of their steaks" and you will get the NY Time review to read.
Both sides or not

Peter Lugers was one of the best meals of my life.

I haven’t been to the others people listed though.

I love STK in the meatpacking district also. Recently, we tried a new British steakhouse in Hawksmor, which was really good, but very expensive.
