Addition by subtraction. Joely Rodriguez signs with Red Sox. The Mets need to find a better player for his (Joely Rodriguez) roster spot.

Bryan Harper has Tommy John surgery. Will be out until the All Star break.

Mets have a steep climb to catch the Braves. Braves are younger and have more talent under contract, but at least Mets now have a serious organization.
Joely Rodriguez - ( New Window )

The Mets have talent. But they have not groomed it correctly.

Why did they choose to spend 350 million on Lindor when they had Rosario, Jimenez and Maurizio all in the organization? Since you can only have one or two of those mega contracts, why not use it on a position of need? It was an incredibly shortsighted move
That's a big difference

Have to agree about Lindor. I mean, he’s been good, but not mega-contract good. The Lindor signing likely had more to do with Cohen wanting to make an immediate splash than anything else.

But with Lindor, it was exciting being able to sign the best shortstop in baseball at only 26 years old. Hell, he’s was young enough were he could have easily IMPROVED as he got older. But…he’s played under his career averages in his first two years. And that sucks. We certainly won’t lose with him as a player and he can still put up better stats, but I was expecting at least his career norms for that money.

His 2022 wRC+ was the second best of his career and well above his career average (118 career vs. 127 this season), his fWAR was also the second best mark of his career, career high in RBI, 98 runs is his 5th best mark but 3 better seasons were 101,99,99. Career wOBA is .346, 2022 .342, career OBP .342, 2022 .339, bb% career 8.5, 8.4 2022... 0% snark at all but his 2022 was as good or better than his career norms, remarkably close to his career average. I understand thinking for that price he should be "ridiculously good" but his 2022 was what any realistic person could expect from Lindor.

Taking into account that 2022 was a down year offensively league wide, he was at or above his career average. His OPS+ was his second highest ever.

intriguing zero risk BP arm for someone

"Right-hander Shelby Miller is a free agent that is apparently intriguing some teams around the league. He tells Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle that the Giants offered him a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training but he has major league offers from two clubs."

SF+AAA 60.1 innings 44 hits 83 k's. The kind of zero-risk arm that randomly tosses 50-60 quality innings for somebody and we all say "how did that happen?"

That fact that his 125 OPS+ was the second best of his career is exactly why he is not worth the money.

BTW Gimenez had an OPS+ of 141 and came in sixth in the MVP voting. Lindor got zero votes in MVP balloting.

I think CooperD is right. Cohen wanted to make a splash. It was a publicity move not a baseball move.

Giminez makes 30 million less than Lindor.

It was just not
I was always a bigger fan of Giminez than anyone

But come on. You make that trade for Lindor eleven out ten times without thinking twice. The only disappointing thing in that trade has been Cookie.

could have been better last year if they signed 7 guys off the street that CLAIMED to be pitchers than what they put out there.
Rodriquez can’t be any worse.

not a bigger fan than everyone but as someone who was also a big gimenez fan i agree with your point. it was a painful deal but a deal this team had to make. most met fans (wrongly) thought gimenez was tejada part 2 but 17+ homers was just as far fetched (and i suspect in future seasons that number will settle back down and turn into more 2bs bc his homers surged more than his xbh%, but who knows). even with gimenez hitting a fringe outcome quickly lindor has been worth 11 fwar and gimenez 7 over the 2 years with his last pre-arb year coming up.

lindor doesnt get enough credit for the impact he's had on the met defense overall. the last 2 years defense has been a key strength when the team has played it's best and for the prior decade it was at best a weakness and at worst a crippling weakness that cost them a WS. there's no argument anyone other than Lindor has led that turnaround.

also agree that cookie has been the letdown. I assume with him out of the trade they'd have kept 1 of the SS but i also assume it would have been Rosario and there was no way to do that deal without Gimenez. but either way im sure thats 30m or so they wish they could have had back to spend elsewhere.

hopefully this year's black friday goes as well as last year's (happy tg shecky and all).
