NFT: TV experts - need help buying new TV

DC Gmen Fan : 11/24/2022 6:23 pm
Never buy new TVs and looking at Friday deals I see some nice 65" Samsung smart TVs for prices in the 400-500$ range. They get seemingly great reviews but then the expert reviews are awful. What am I missing? Here is one I'm looking at.

Nothing

A $500 65” tv will get you the basics. Expert reviews will hammer it for picture quality but you can’t expect much for $400-$500.
Just watch for...

the sale TV's being a lower end model range with big picture size. The idea is to get people focused on the size and not realize the lower end model with worse features.
This is an older technology TV - thats why its cheaper
PatersonPlank : 11/24/2022 7:28 pm : link
First its LED, not OLED.
As far as LEDs go, this is a plain LED. The newer version is QLED, which has picture advantages. The newer versions of QLED also offer full-array LED, and micro-LED, which give advantages in the dimming control. This gives greater contrast, darker blacks, and brings the LED TVs closer to OLED TVs in contrast.

So its older technology, but really good deals. I am going to buy this TV, or one like this, for my patio, but get QLED or OLED for my living room.
If you REALLY care about picture quality

Go OLED. If picture quality isn’t the top priority, then disregard the “expert” reviews and buy whatever fits your criteria (smart features, size, budget, etc). It’s OLED, then the rest.
OLED TVs give greater contrast - the blacks are blacker
PatersonPlank : 11/24/2022 9:40 pm : link
and the colors vibrant. The QLED TVs are brighter. You really have to see them yourself to decide which you prefer. I go back and forth between the Samsung s95 OLED (the brightest of the OLEDs due to Quantum Dot OLED technology, and the Sony x95k Mini-LED TV. The Mini-LED brings it closer to the OLED contrast. I really can't decide.

The Sony OLED A95K is the best, but I don't want to spend $3k
if you are sticking to that price range

I believe you can get a TCL 6 series. TCL's built in roku tvs are really good for the price

Agreed.

I have 3 of these in my house including a 75 incher. They are great TVs for the price.
Too many choices-

This is a living room tv. I dont care about gaming. I just want a smart tv with a good picture 65" to go above my mantle.

Samsung, Hisense, LG, TCL - How does one decide?

You're on the right track with these brands, just a little advice. Samsung is a high end brand, so you'll pay more even for their budget and black Friday barebones models. LG is a brand I love, but you're talking higher end money. I have an LG OLED.

Hisense and TCL are budget brands that pack decent features and represent good value. I own a TCL and just got a 55" hisense, model 55U6GR. It also comes in 65. Model #65U6GR. Best buy has it for 499 for BF. Usually 799. Reviews put this tv at 7.9/10 but great picture quality.

TCL series 5 and series 6 are well-featured top. The series 6 is TCL's high end flagship model.

I would go with a TCL. Most reviewers say it’s the best bang for your buck. Can get it with Roku or Google TV.
I ended up ordering a 55'' Sony Bravia 2021 model OLED

Another vote for the TCL 6 series. They offer a good feature set at a good price. I have 2 in my house.
