Bright Spot: Nick Gates

CMicks3110 : 11/25/2022 8:25 am
I honed in on him while rewatching the game and I thought he looked very very good. Great pass blocking. Stoned his man repeatedly. Got good pop when running. Also intense dude.

Jack Anderson on the other hand. Yuck.

Tyre Phillips looked pretty good too.
Took a shot on the chin

from Parsons, too. Gates is an instigator - wonder what he did to piss of Parsons?
Unbelievable
Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/25/2022 8:27 am : link
that he is even playing this year.

He should keep the job.
Eric did you watch him too?
CMicks3110 : 11/25/2022 8:29 am : link
How do you think he played?
Is Gates a UFA?
Metnut : 11/25/2022 8:32 am : link
Would be great to lock him up to an affordable deal.
i think going forward...
BigBlueDawg56 : 11/25/2022 8:34 am : link
he is our center and tyree phillips in our RG with ezeudu at LG when the whole line gets healthy

100% correct Eric!
If they can figure out the 2 Guards, they will have built themselves a very good oline. We need a couple of mean spirited Guards.

Agree. I saw the same thing regarding Gates in pass protection. Be interesting to see how Sy's review calls it and I am sure someone will post the PFF grade (not the best but at least something).
Gates was excellent and impressive coming back from that injury
kelly : 11/25/2022 10:07 am : link
He should win comeback player of the year.

He held the point of attack on passing downs unlike Feliciano. Gates deserves to start going forward.

On this is contrary. But I would put Neal at left guard and keep Phillips at right tackle with Gates at center. At least short term that is our best line.

We have to be more stout in the middle going forward. Gates and Neal give us that.
That's good to hear. I'm looking forward to Sy's take on Gates' play.
Ira : 11/25/2022 10:07 am : link
If Ezeudu and Neal keep improving, we should have a pretty good o-line next season. Won't that be something?
I thought he looked exhausted too
mittenedman : 11/25/2022 10:10 am : link
which is understandable but it didn't really affect his play. He will get stronger and better as he goes.

There were some small, important longterm wins coming out of this game. Gates and Thibodeaux.
Keep Gates at center
PaulN : 11/25/2022 10:40 am : link
Put Evan Neal at guard. Let Philips and Peart man the right tackle position. Maybe we can knock some people off the ball next week. It's the way I would go. Neal's transition to guard would be seamless. Let him move to right guard, leave Gates at center, Philips and Peart can man the right tackle position, in fact, they have played no worse then Neal.

"Want-To" personified
Gates absolutely should be C going forward
regulator : 11/25/2022 11:08 am : link
but I disagree with anyone suggesting Neal should move to guard. Pass pro techniques are completely different and moving him to guard on the other side of the line will hamper his development. He needs to get his reps and will grow as a tackle. Our running game has suffered in his absence.

If we need to upgrade over Ezeudu at LG in the short term, and again I am not convinced of that either, it should be with Bredeson.

Thomas-Ezeudu-Gates-Glowinski-Neal is a serviceable line we can build on.

Neal is substantially better than Phillips or Peart. They did not draft him #7 overall to switch him to RG after 8 games played. Take out the Dallas game week 3- Neal has been improving week over week.

There were several posters just like you that wanted to move Thomas to guard after the first half of his rookie season too. Some of you just never learn…
was watching a youtube fan video re: Tyre Phillips
bc4life : 11/25/2022 11:21 am : link
Had problems staying healthy, but thought he should have been developed at guard not tackle. Said the switching between tackle and guard negatively impacted his development. also, was JUCO transfer so he did not get 4 years of coaching under one system.

I'm wondering could he be answer at one of the guard positions. Neal is their right tackle - injuries and growing pains like Thomas, but he is their right tackle.
I'd be shocked if Peart
bc4life : 11/25/2022 11:22 am : link
was on team next year.

Might have had better chance as blocking TE
Gates is the answer at enter if he's healthy.
Optimus-NY : 11/25/2022 11:29 am : link
Love him. Left Guard is the question going forward (Ezeudu? Bredeson? a draft pick next year? FA? etc.). Glowinski isn't any great shakes, but he's a pro and can at least fill the RG slot this year and next year. Neal is the RT now and going forward, period.
With the relative youth of our oline

A top 3 rd OG May make more sense long term to solidify it for yrs
Rather have a solid RB that is lower cost running thru it
I am a saquon fan but it’s a tough question how long to commit
3 yrs max. If someone else wants to blow the bank, take the 3rd 2024 comp
Back in August, I defined a "good season"
BlackLight : 11/25/2022 12:32 pm : link
by how many players proved they were worth keeping around in 2023. The fewer guys we have to worry about replacing, the better.
Gates is a FA but both
Dave on the UWS : 11/25/2022 1:28 pm : link
Schoen and Daboll have openly mentioned how impressed they are with the guy. I would be surprised if he isn’t resigned and the starting center going forward
Don't forget about our RG we drafted from NC....

Marcus McKethan is 6'5" and 340.
Gates had the highest PFF grade

By far on the offense.
82.4
CMicks3110 : 11/25/2022 2:17 pm : link
He needs to start the rest of the year. With him, Neal and Bellinger back, looking forward to seeing if the run game gets going again.

Smart. Tough. Dependable. Badass.
Neal should absolutely stay at RT
Rick in Dallas : 11/25/2022 5:04 pm : link
He is going to be a stud RT in a couple of years
Sure let's put a highly rated tackle prospect taken in the top 10
Larry in Pencilvania : 11/25/2022 8:23 pm : link
At guard after 8 games in his rookie season. Good call
way too much panic over Neal
bc4life : 11/27/2022 7:50 am : link
Thomas struggled early on and now is one of best in the league
If anything, you would put
section125 : 11/27/2022 8:02 am : link
Phillips at RG with Neal at RT.

But Gates needs to stay at center the rest of the year to see if he should be re-signed.
