9. Looking to Upgrade We need to prioritize the position this offseason. Daniel Jones Signed thru: 2022 | APY Rank: 29 | QB EPA Rank: 17 Returning to the Giants would be ideal for Daniel Jones. Would it be ideal for the Giants? The team needs to consider other options, but finding a quarterback early in the draft didn’t work out in 2022 and probably isn’t going to work out in 2023, either. Do the Giants want to continue fitting their offense around what Jones does (and might not) offer? “That’s going to be the toughest offseason question,” an exec from another team said. “If you are Daniel Jones, you don’t want to go to another team. You want the Giants to pay you because you want to be with (Brian) Daboll, because he brings the most out of you. What are you going to do, go to New Orleans and play for a defensive head coach? Like, what? It is very interesting.” |
They’ll sign him if the ‘value’ is right. He’s a bridge any way you look at it.
I think the most likely result is they get a cheap ‘bridge’ QB in his place, continue to add core pieces, and go for the QB in 2024.
I think anyone the Giants Draft will be more of a developmental QB and with the lack of talent it would be nice to have a bridge to the future similar to what Alex smith did in KC.
It's not ideal for Jones but it does give himself another year or 2 to prove his worth.
I would not be afraid to pay him 2 or 3 years structured right where he might be a high priced back-up or trade bait for a team down the road.
I would rather they bring back Jones than Saquon and that will make non-Giants fans upset because they don't look at it with proper lenses. Jones won't be commanding big money and he's likely the best option going into 2023. Draft WRs, draft a RB, continue rebuilding the line and draft DBs.
But then I wondered what happens if they had switched teams last night. What if Dak is throwing to our receivers, and not Lamb, Gallup and Schultz, and is behind our O-line and not the Dallas line? What if Daniel has those guys to throw to? What if Dak has no running game because his OL isn't opening holes? What if Daniel has the Dallas running game? What if Dak knows his D can't get stops, but Daniel knows he has at least some margin for error.
Gotta say I don't envy Schoen and the rest of the brain trust.
I think there is a real good chance of that happening.

Thank you, my work here is done.
Two years at most for DJ, with an option for a third (if he really starts getting better in his second year under Dabes and Kafka). I won't mind a flyer on a QB in the second round (Hooker?). I thought last spring was the best shot we had to get that flyer QB (Ridder) because of our circumstances. But I am much less down on DJ this year that I've been for the past few years. No doubt to me though, he's still a 'bridge' QB. So I'm with you, WR in the first, RB in the third (Blake Corum?), then DB's and OL spread throughout.
DJ will get good offers, especially from teams with decent lines and good WRs.
But I think he's going to have more options than New Orleans.
The article is about all 32 teams. I doubt there's an agenda at play.
Yea because this article is only about Daniel Jones. What a conspiracy

+1

Gallup and CeeDee would have less catches. Dak makes throws DJ doesn't even attempt. DJ excels in a dink and dunk offense, he's not built to stretch the field effectively.
This was written about every team in the league. Do you really think they sat on this until the Giants lost two games so they could publish it just to bash Jones?
Oh wait, on this board you probably do. The entire world is in on a conspiracy to humiliate Daniel Jones.
I am not against signing Jones to a one or two year deal while we get to the next guy. They just need to pay him like a fringe starter and if he gets a better offer from someone else you wish him well and move on. The team is in a rebuild and you don’t start that by overpaying marginal talent on long term deals.

If he is not the guy and he is quite a bit more expensive than someone near him, why bother with a bridge?
Not arguing. I see also no problem with a bridge. But what's the point if you are "certain?"

But it will not be a solid team looking to lock down the QB position and go the Super Bowl. It will be a team in transition that is looking for someone to push a starter or be a bridge to someone else. Nobody is offering him top dollar to be their future.

Somebody has to play QB and you can’t just go to the QB store and get your next one. They may need time to find/prep one, so you keep someone who knows the system and the personnel to stay competitive while you work on the upgrade.
This team has a ton of needs and you can’t address all of them in one off season. However, you can’t overpay him.
This reminds me of the 2017 Jaguars and Blake Bortles.
It is a Giants strawman. No one has ever argued that he has a good supporting cast.
On the other hand, you see JV WRs, JV OL, and all of these impossible to succeed type narratives all the time.
No one is saying he has Miami's skill position players. But he does have a top 2 LT and a top 2 RB. 2 of the 3 most important support positions for a righty QB.
Not to mention everyone seems to agree that the coaching has been a huge improvement and no one expected much of this roster. Yet, somehow, when the conversation moves to Jones those same people seem to want to make the conversation only about how he took this big step forward. Isn't it logical that he like many other people on the team have improved from better coaching? If someone that looked as bad as him could take such a big step forward couldn't this staff do that for a lot of QBs conceivably? Why spend a lot on him?
I think this article makes a great objective case for that.
What has become super annoying about this Jones conversation that I've seen bw mention is how everyone gives him credit when he does play well. But when he doesn't the victim complexes come out. "Everyone was just waiting to pick apart Jones for 1 bad game while he makes a herculean effort to barely lose with a bunch of horrible players"
This reminds me of the 2017 Jaguars and Blake Bortles.
I don’t think any team in the league is offering Jones $30M for any length of time. If there is one, I am almost positive it is not the Giants.
Jones seems like a great dude and I wanted him to succeed here. It hasn’t worked out to this point and I don’t want him holding the team back.

Ok so what about having Taylor? As you say - don't overpay. So if you don't overpay (let the other guy overpay)-- do you go with someone like Taylor?
And if another team overpays for Jones, and Barkley seems to be declining/flattening out, and the Defense (exclude the Dallas game) in the 3 losses sort of has been roughed up a bit, and next year there will probably be a tougher schedule,--
where are the Giants going? .
I'm thinking it is best to try to disprove our personal theories rather than prove them. That seems to help keep things balanced.
