Now that we have a few extra days between games, I thought I'd throw this out for fun. My favorite car chases were in The French Connection and Bullitt. Yours?
The Seven-Ups is my favorite because I know all the roads so well. (Also note that the chase magically shifts from the west side of the Hudson to the east side of the Hudson, but all good.).
a single uncut shot starting about 10 seconds in and going on for four minutes or so. Still can't understand how they did this ... I mean I know what they did but it just doesn't seem possible.
You hit the gold standard with Bullitt and The French Connection.
The Seven Ups was pretty damn good too.
By the way, Bill Hickman was the stunt driver in those movies. He also played Agent Mulderig in The French Connection if his name doesn't ring a bell. Best driver of his time.

Yhat's very interesting. I didn't know that.
A good one that never gets credit is the comedy What’s up Doc
The getaway chase in 'To Live and Die in LA' was a classic in movie-making. Young Bill Peterson was great in that movie. Here's how they filmed those scenes - ( New Window )
Beat me to it. That's the most underrated car chase.
The Seven Ups is probably my favorite. Those old '70s sleds careen all over the road just as they would in real life - no sports cars they.
from someone who just doesn't "get" car chase scenes: what actually makes the best ones the best?
I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I usually just find car chases boring. I don't know if they're just two unrealistic, or if they are sensory overload for my brain, or what, but they usually take me out of the movie and sometimes even put me to sleep.
Dirt Bike in the Aqueducts is super intense. The escape from the parking garage after bailing out Sarah Connor, and lastly the pickup vs. the Trucker of Liquid Nitro, all great and in one movie non the less.
Other’s Death Proof, Matrix Reloaded, Vanishing Point (entire movie is a car chase scene), Blues Brothers is epic and hilarious, lots of good ones in many Bond movies. Pretty much every 80’s/90’s action film has great car chase scenes.
San Francisco with its steep hills and narrow streets is a great city for car chases. "The Rock" was the best, but more recently "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" was a good one.
As for the best car chase anywhere ? I'm going with the Blues Brothers.
I watched Reds2 last night. It was a good car chase but I most liked

I kinda agree with you. If it falls into the catagory of 'This shit's just not real', it does nothing for me.
It has to have the look of reality to pique my interest.

Ira, one more thing about Hickman. He was real tight with James Dean, sort of like Brad Pitt to Leo in 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood'. He was driving a second car behind Dean when he crashed and actually pulled him from the wreckage.
My vote goes to the Truck vs Motorcycle scene from Terminator 2 (granted no cars were involved, but I think it still qualifies). For TV... It has to be this one - ( New Window )

It's already an awesome car chase thru the loading docks, surface streets, and down into the aqueduct. The final run against traffic on the freeway with a ridiculous number of involved vehicles puts it into the stratosphere.
for maybe being the first to really go at it hard in a city for a significant distance with stunt drivers pushing the limit.
French Connection for the ballsiness to do it without permits in Brooklyn.
Ronin had a few chases, and they put significant effort storyboarding them, and using RHD cars with dummy steering wheels on the left side to keep the actors in the cars during the chase. John Frankenheimer was super hardcore about cars, and it showed. Nothing was CGI'd, and lots of guys were driving the vehicles that flipped over or were in big accidents.
Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift for putting drifting on film, which while they are not necessarily chase scenes, they highlighted real drifting (as opposed to single corner powerslides which is all you get in 99.9% of car chases). You had some Formula Drift guys at the time doing the driving, including the real DK Keichi Tsuchiya.
Drive with Ryan Gosling had a good (albeit quick) chase. You can accomplish a lot with a well executed reverse 180 (Rockford turn) for me.
Baby Driver had a decently ambitious chase as well, and that wild double front/rear 180 around the semi was pretty sweet even if it might not have been a true single shot.

Forgot about this.
An excellent chase, very underrated and often not known about.
Do you know where this chase ends with the hero car crashing into the back of a semi?
I'm 99% sure it's the Milwood exit off the Taconic Parkway.
It's definitely the Taconic. I forget which exit but could be Millwood for sure. The Palisades Parkway somehow morphs into the Taconic during the chase despite being on opposite sides of the river...
The Road Warrior tanker chase
That was freakin great movie..
I think Bullitt is the icon and the gold standard.

and to the tax assessors office in the end
Fury Road can’t be topped but it put that in its own category.

Terminator 2
Drive
Ambulance (basically 90% of the movie is one chase scene)
Fast 5 when they steal the vault
Honorable mention to both the first and last race (neither is a chase but whatever) in Tokyo Drift

James Cameron filmed this because no one else on the crew was crazy enough to do it.
