NFT: What’s going on with my gas house lamp (video)?

FranknWeezer : 11/26/2022 9:35 am
Video should be self explanatory, but after working fine for the 9 years we have lived here, all of a sudden it won’t keep a flame. I noticed compared to the lamp on the other side of the door that the flame on this one was smaller and “bluer”. So I turned it off and cleaned the jet with a toothbrush thinking maybe there was an obstruction. No dice. And now as you can see in the video, it can’t maintain a flame at all. There’s no wind during the video, and I had the valve turned to 3/4 open…open full didn’t help either but did produce a louder gas sound. Any ideas? Thanks for your help, BBI.
What’s up with the flame on this gas house lamp? - ( New Window )
Can’t say I know much about this

But could it be something about the air flow. The flame seems to hover above the top edge of the tube like it doesn’t have any oxygen to ignite until it gets above the rim of the tube. Are there vents in the bottom of the tube the might be obstructed preventing a proper air flow? Completely guessing here.
I don’t know anything about lamps

But I agree with BillT looks like an air flow problem. The video looks like you have a lot of corrosion in the lamp itself that could also be in the line as well. Cleaning and vacuuming it out could help. You also should be able to remove the torch portion of the unit to clean out the line and remove any debris.

Smell any gas call the gas company because if it’s a gas leak it can be very dangerous
if it has its own valve,

shut the valve all the way, then open it up again - see if that changes anything

Its not getting enough oxygen. Some type of air intake orifice(s) are probably clogged. Dont use a toothbrush, get yourself torch tip cleaners. Clean the main orifice again with the tip cleaners and while doing so look around for air intake orifice(s) (probably near the bottom of the tip on the sides of it). That should fix your problem.

agree with this. See if you can remove that piece just about the valve. Maybe it unscrews off of there. Then, clean it thoroughly.
Thanks everyone

I’ll shut off the valve, remove the orifice and clean it thoroughly. Also a hum out debris and see if all that helps.
Have you checked the attic?

Removing and pumping air thru the orifice to clear it worked. Thanks folks!
