but I don’t think it matters. Schoen doesn’t seem like the type of guy that will delay the inevitable. I think he rips the bandaid off or signs him long term.

If the Giants had picked up his option, you don't think they would have let 2023 play out on it?
Jones will be here in 2023 I believe; maybe 2024 too
If you aren’t willing to sign a QB long term and fully commit to him, do you really have your QB?
At some point you know what you have at QB. I don’t look at Jones any different than I look at Mitch Trubisky.
Tend to agree with these thoughts.
No, I wouldn't go back and pick up the option. Jones at the option price of $22.4M isn't outrageous, but in my view he isn't displaying enough to want to continue investing in the relationship. As noted by Sean, it's just delaying things and would hate to miss out on any opportunity to improve the position, even with taking on some risk.
This question reminds me of how unsure they were of Jones.
They weren't even willing to risk 22 mil for him for 1 more year. I'd be surprised if they offer him more than that for next year now unless I m missing something and I was not a negative DJ guy by any stretch. The Dallas game took a lot of wind out of my sails. The only thing I would add is what Sy said. The Giants need to know his replacement is before they toss him aside. Someone might step up and offer him a three year deal which Giants won't want to match and I just don't see the Giants doing that unless it's team friendly. Going to be a real interesting off season.
Status had to be a consideration with missing the final six games. The same issue and concern would arise if something happens to end this year. It didn’t even have to be a concern about his talent.
I like Jones. I think had Daboll been his coach two years ago, he may have developed. But even though he has gotten better, he still just does not get the job done. Thursday's game underscored that for whatever reason, he does not come through enough times when the game is on the line. He did lead 5 GW drives. But on Thursday had he completed that pass to Barkley it likely goes for a TD, and it is game on. He had a few other fairly short throws that he botched. He is just inconsistent.
For $22 mill they can get some good players at different positions of need. I think it is time to change directions and move on.

okay, what do you think they will need to pay for some other journeyman QB? All of these guys are getting paid. So, unless you are okay with starting Tyrod next year, we ARE going to spend up for a QB. Not unless we just draft a JAG.
I wish "the guy" was out there but I just dont see it.
We don't need another bridge quarterback on the roster when we already have one at the proper going rate for such a role. The plan should be to draft a quarterback(s) and sign a quality backup ala Colt McCoy. Davis Webb can move on a to more fruitful career in coaching.

i ve been on the same page as you on Jones right along. I agree with this the only thing I would add is if they don't sign him who's the QB ? I doubt they want to take a step backwards with Taylor. And I could see the Saints or Commanders going after him. There's always someone who thinks they can fix his flaws.
He’s a bridge QB; we can find others at better value until we pull the trigger in the draft, probably in ‘24.
And have some dog of a QB for the next 2 years? How about what happened last year in the second half of the year? People I hear mention Gardener Minchew with his great stats. @ years ago he had 17 TD's and 6 ints and led his team to a 1-15 record. Unless the QB to be drafted is looked at as almost can't miss lets see what DJ can do with a healthy and improver offense. The last thing anyone wants to see is the team ging 3-14 the next 2 yrs

It’s all about value. I like DJ, but he’s not. ‘the guy’. Buffalo laid the blueprint when they took a step back in year one with Allen. We can’t shell out big bucks for Jones now; we take a step back, build up core of team, and go for the QB in ‘24. We don’t have to have a ‘dog of a QB’; we can get a comparable guy for better value than Jones. He is not the future.
$22.5 million these days for a QB is a mid level salary
I’m neutral right now on DJ. Waiting for the season to be finished before I make a decision .
I do think Schoen made the right decision on not exercising the option .
it's worth the risk. he's shown he can be some level of a starting QB and he's still 25 (so next year is his age 26). OTC values his play at 29m and all it is going to take is 1 team to model values similarly and need a qb for him to have had positive value on that number.
22m is basically going to be a bottom salary for starting QBs not on their first 4 years of rookie deal and nothing about that option exercised stops them from drafting bryce young if they can get him.
it's spilled milk but for the price of tagging jones (which i still think is a pretty high likelihood) they could have had Jones on his 5yo and tagged Barkley at the very reasonable $10m and have had more leverage in an extension.

When you can't make easy throws consistently after 4 years it tells me you lack a certain level of composure and decision making.
I just don't think he consistently makes good decisions. I don't think that is changing.
It's a shame because he has all the right attributes to be a top ten QB. But when you are slow to process and consistently make good decisions it limits you.

I don't see Jones as "The Guy" (Franchise QB for the next 10 years)
But he could be the right guy for right now (a QB that can win for the next 2-4 years while you find The Guy)
I actually think a few of his bad games make him more likely to come back as his cost probably won't be so astronomical in Free Agency.
Huge game next Sunday, December 4. That is a place where almost no one thought they would be, even the most optimistic of us.
Here s what I know. Daniel Jones is the quarterback for the Giants against Wash next Sunday, I m really excited about this game, and a chance at the play offs.
No one has engaged more in the Daniel Jones situation than me, but I m am shocked at how much energy is being spent on this site about his situation when the Giants are playing games that really matter in December, something we have all been pining for. I mean that s obsessive even for this place
It seems some really are more to focused on being right about this situation than the team s success.
I m done with the Jone s discussion, at this point it is what it is, win Sunday and let Schoen figure it out
Sorry to derail your thread Christian, yours is a legit question for a fan forum, but I just don’t care about the past or Jone s future with team right now.
All I care about is Daniel leading team to victory Sunday.
For $22 mill they can get some good players at different positions of need. I think it is time to change directions and move on.
This X infinity.
How many more years of data do you need? We are deep into Jones's fourth year. And while he has played better than years two and three, has he not shown anything more - to me - than he's hitting up against his ceiling: a game manager plus.
It's more than worth the risk to let Jones go in 2023. Let another team see if they can squeeze more out of Jones's limited talent.
The ball security is better. Everything that we knew before is still in front of us. Needs to run to affect the game. When he doesn't, they don't win. Misses some gotta have it throws. Not productive enough as a passer. Doesn't elevate players around him with his passing.
I think the above is forgotten by many. There were questions whether Jones would be able to play again. I think the “prove it year” for Jones included the health of his neck.
Yes, I pick up the 5th year option with what we now know.
Because I don’t know whom the replacement would be, and it’s cheaper than we could likely get him. Picking too low for Stroud, Young, or Levis.
Those that say no, I’d love to hear some names. Not pragmatic to have no plan behind the “no” answer. Your committing to a more traditional rebuild. Which I think to this fan base would be painful.

The team is also 7-4 with our current roster of WRs. By your logic we should hang on to all of them since they are playing winning football.
I will never understand this idea that when the team is losing for three years, Daniel Jones is the victim of a poor roster and poor coaching, but when we win it is Daniel Jones who is the primary reason (despite an anemic offense). He is either responsible for win and losses directly or he isn’t. He can’t be blameless for losses and solely responsible for wins.

They already have a journeyman QB in Tyrod who can win(I am not a fan, btw). He IS NOT as good as Jones. And I think he is a lot more fragile than Jones - but he was signed with an eye for holding the fort should Jones not be deemed "THE guy". If they move on and nobody signs Jones to a big deal, I would not mind a low level contract for a couple years.
It is my contention that Daboll can coach up a kid with a good arm, brains and good wheels. Jones has all those, but there is a disconnect - he looks brilliant and then clueless.
I think they can find a kid out there with potential to coach up. Like I said, I like Jones, but he is what we have seen. Lots of potential with out fully developing it.
Sign a quality backup who can compete for the starting job with Tyrod. Guys like McCoy, Minshew, Keenum et al are inexpensive and can win games in the NFL. Any of these guys would deliver results comparable to what DJ has done this year. Use the cap space for the must have extensions of AT and DL and then in free agency to acquire the best available WR and ILB. With this coaching staff, this will again be a playoff contending team in the coming years even if they have to franchise tag and trade Barkley.
Draft a quarterback who falls to them like Hendon Hooker in 2023 and then trade up to get a quarterback like Drake Maye in 2024. Create the proper competitive dynamic so that a young quarterback emerges and takes the brass ring rather than ceremoniously giving it to him based on the less than optimal "full bloom in love" quarterback assessment criteria.
It's possible that we might be stuck with him for another year if the draft doesn't break our way, but committing to mediocrity and delaying the rebuild a year ahead of time is lunacy.
If we want to keep him, he'll probably be available for less $$ anyway

Depends on some market factors, but I'd expect 12-15 for 1 year. I think he's on the higher end of the placeholder class.
1) Besides me just not thinking he's worth that much, you can't overlook he had a neck injury to end his season.
2) I don't believe he showed anywhere near enough to warrant the extra year
3) Even much improved this year, I haven't seen anywhere near enough to think we should invest multiple years and/or the market $
4) On the cheap, sure. Over $20M, I'd take my chances elsewhere. I think this staff can coach a rookie or other FA
5) I don't deny he's had a shit time here in terms of WR, OL, Barkley injuries, etc. But, at some time I still want to see a lot more from a #6 pick in year 4. The last 2 games were examples of this, for me. I just wouldn't pay the kind of $ or years to hope they both guess rightn him AND can build a top OL AND get multiple weapons at WR AND can have a solid running game all for next season. That's too much that needs to go right for over $20M
With what we had seen the prior few years definitely not. He hadn't shown enough positive to warrant it nor had he stayed healthy. If he had shown promise definitely. You can only go by the facts at the time.
The team doesn't run on what ifs
It's time to move on from a replacement-level player
The right move at the time. In hindsight I would have picked it up. It’s a really cheap one year contract for a starting QB. Between how he has played this year and the lack of good options where we will be drafting is my reasoning.
I've seen on BBI that jones is no better than Taylor, Trubisky, Case Keenum, Mike Glennon and a myriad of other QBs and while I'm still not sure what he is, I am very confident that he is better than all of those guys, many people want to play Madden football, well we'll just go and get another "bridge QB". Well who is that guy, we'll just get him until we can get our own Patrick Mahomes. If you really want to see QB hell, lets start Taylor or bring in Andy Dalton or Trubisky or Trevor Simien. If the Giants want to move on from Jones they better have a plan where they can replace him with someone better. Otherwise they run the risk of improving the team around the QB position and lets be honest, that really shouldn't be too hard to as there are positions on this team that are dreadful and the injuries have been catastrophic, so with a tiny bit of luck there should be improvements at WR, TE, LB and a heck of a lot less injuries next year. Then they will be faced with Andy Dalton or Taylor at QB on an 8 or 9 win team stuck without a QB. Some want to say that Jones is a replacement level player, but yet many people figure he'll get other offers to start, probably from teams that want to improve the position because they have replacement level players.
I am very confident that he is better than all of those guys
Why?
Because I've seen them all play many times, Joes has a better arm, is more accurate and can do more with his legs than most. All of the guys I've mentioned have serious flaws and make a ton of mistakes. Daniel Jones is far from perfect and I'm not entirely sure what he will become because call them excuses or not but he has really been up against it with the skill position guys and the absolutely awful OL, but he is tough and makes plays to win games, not every time and no not as much as Mahomes, but those guys don't/ We saw Glennon last year, do you want more of that? The Giants obviously think more of Jones than Taylor or Trubisky. Dislike him all you want, want him to leave that's your opinion, but he is better than the guys I mentioned by a lot

but I don’t think it matters. Schoen doesn’t seem like the type of guy that will delay the inevitable. I think he rips the bandaid off or signs him long term.
If the Giants had picked up his option, you don't think they would have let 2023 play out on it?
I meant that now he can rip the band aid off should he not see him as a long term answer. We either get to move on a year earlier or we already have our franchise guy. The 5th year would have been fine I guess but if they aren’t sold on him now then it’s technically a good thing we aren’t committed.
Yeah, if they aren't sold on him it's good they aren't locked into a deal. I guess they could have tried to trade him line Darnols or Mayfield, but that's a gamble.

We already have a cheap bridge QB on the roster in Tyrod Taylor.
For $22 mill they can get some good players at different positions of need. I think it is time to change directions and move on.
Yet, talk to me again if they make the playoffs.

I think the quarterback decision is Schoen's, and I think he'll wait to be very confident in the player before he commits big money.
I don't think Jones has earned a big time contract. But I don't think 22M qualifies as a big contract.

Dallas’ #1 defense, and nothing at WR, TE, and RB with saquon having nothing has swayed yall.

Why?

I’m with you.
Because Joe Schoen didn't pick up the option I am guessing DJ is gone.
The 5th year is a very cost effective move even if you're undecided. I was undecided so I would have picked up the option.
Hey dude! I haven't seen you post in a long time. Maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

but I don’t think it matters.
