Giants Failure Against the Run All Season Long

M.S. : 11/27/2022 11:04 am

Only twice in eleven games have Giants held opponents to under 4 yards per carry. And these numbers do not exhibit any pattern that I can discern in regard to when players were out due to injury. It has been pretty consistent all year long -- the inability of the Giants Front 6 to slow up an opponent's run game:

Opponent/Rushes/Yards/YPC

TEN/ 26/ 93/ 3.6
CAR/ 23/ 146/ 6.3
DAL/ 30/ 176/ 5.9
CHI/ 32/ 149/ 4.7
GB/ 20/ 94/ 4.7
BAL/ 24/ 211/ 8.8
JAX/ 21/ 142/ 6.8
SEA/ 25/ 87/ 3.5
HOU/ 19/ 101/ 5.3
DET/ 37/ 160/ 4.3
DAL/ 39/ 169/ 4.3

Total/ 296/ 1528/ 5.2

IMO, Joe Schoen needs to address this issue in the 2023 Draft. And while he needs to expend serious Draft capital on the WR position, as well as his interior offensive line, not to mention TE, CB and maybe QB, he also needs to address his defensive front 6 where there is a significant talent deficiency against the run. He needs to find 2 premium ILBs and new talent at DT to spell the tandem of Leonard Williams/Dexter Lawrence. Or, to eventually replace one of them.
Davidson was a big loss IMO.....

seems like the times we have Dex or Leo a breather, the other teams seemed to gash us even more. I agree that we need to look at better depth right now, however ILB has been a much bigger issue IMO. We need to draft a stud at the ILB position. That will help stop the run too.
A lot like cb & lb & wr
GiantsRage2007 : 11/27/2022 11:11 am : link
We have no DL depth. A few injuries & we either have to leave Leo or Law in there all game or bring in a scrub. Neither is ideal.

We need another couple Drafts & FA periods.
Our ILBs are terrible
Bill in UT : 11/27/2022 11:15 am : link
at filling holes. We need to draft one the first 2 days. Hopefully Beavers can be the second, or else we need another. If Gates holds up down the stretch, we have enough other OGs coming back to be decent. IOL probably not a Day 1 or 2 priority in that case. We need a WR early, probably another Day 3 or round 3. Probably a CB also, depending on how some of these guys who have been thrown into action look.

Davidson will be back, Moreaux may come along, and grab a big body Day 3. Might pick up a DT in FA, also, for not too much.
I really wish that Martinez worked out.

Him not being who he was was such a kick in the nuts.
I'm wondering if one of the issues
M.S. : 11/27/2022 11:24 am : link

is Wink's 4-2-5 base formation? That's at least one less big guy out there. If we had a real live breathing 2-way ILB with uber-talent (which we haven't seen in a decade and more) maybe we could run a standard 4-3 more often.

Yep. Another injury in a long line of injuries that have decimated this franchise for almost a generation.
That’s one way to look at it but lowest 4 rush yardage games, Giants
Ivan15 : 11/27/2022 11:26 am : link
Held the opponent to 4.3 yards per attempt or less and the Giants are 1-3 in those games. Maybe low rush yards per attempt is not a good indicator of wins.
A few reasons
Matt M. : 11/27/2022 11:34 am : link
First, we only have 2 really reliable DL after a couple of injuries. Dex and Williams wear down. Two, our base D generally only has 2 legit DL with Ward and KT outside. It's not a 3-4. It's more like a 2-4-5 or some variation. Three, and maybe most important, is our ILB are terrible most of the time.

Dead on!
No Doubt About It

It’s DJ’s fault.
Agree M.S.

also agree with Simms.

Let's hope JS recognizes its a big issue. The teams in the NFCE are not going to give up the run anytime soon. The division has always been this way for the most part. With the current QB's in the division the best path seems to be to put the ball in the hands of the QB.
Inside linebacker is a huge need
Hammer : 11/27/2022 12:10 pm : link
and I expect Schoen to address it on day two. (with a WR taken on day one).

ILB. The point for Dex and Leo to clog up the OL so they close holes and don't allow OL players to get to the 2nd level. This in theory frees up the LB's to get free shots at the ball carriers. This is why Martinez got so many tackles. Our ILB just can't do the job.

+1
I’ll tell him to

bring his Harry Potter wand - he will need it to resolve all those issues. Oh yeah, Davidson, Beavers, Ezeudu we’re drafted to solve some of those issues. If your solutions get injured you will have problems.
Beavers was a big injury imv
Rick in Dallas : 11/27/2022 1:00 pm : link
Crowder and Smith are not capable of plugging holes near LOS
They make tackles 5 yards off LOS and both are awful in pass coverage
Definitely need to address ILB day 2 of draft.. big fan of Jack Campbell
If Ojulari played this year Ward could have been moved inside a bit to help Dex and Williams

Yes, "Defenso Tackeless" spell
Beavers’ injury

Also set the team back at the ILB spot.

Feel better about the possibility of some younger guys securing the IOL but we desperately need ILB’s and WR’s. Those are the biggest holes on the roster. After that we there is a couple secondary needs like. CB and IOL. Depth is an issue

I don't know where he's projected, but Tough, Smart, Dependable- Tommy Eichenberg- OSU. Played yesterday with both thumbs heavily taped- says it's made him improve his tackling technique, lol
Another season with lousy ILBs

This is a HUGE problem. I am grateful GB Packers didn’t use their ground game to punish us, especially in that last drive inside our 5 yard line.

No doubt, we need to find guys who are good at this besides the guys on our IR who may or may not be qualified to do such.

It has pained me to watch these teams beat us up on the LOS.
This is a good area to spend some money in free agency...
Walker Gillette : 11/27/2022 4:08 pm : link
Competent ILBs and a rotational run stopping DT do not cost that much money in the general scheme of things and you can be reasonably sure if the teams pro scouting department does a good job that there will be a significant improvement against the run in the center of the defense. Imagine the difference if the Giants had a trustworthy DT against the run to spell Williams and Dex and even average ILBs. This is one of the areas on the roster that is severely lacking, they should be able to improve it next year significantly without breaking the bank. This is what is so intriguing about the rebuild, if done correctly there are some positions that can be a lot better next year, WR, TE, ILB, etc.

the eras of Sam Huff and Harry Carson know how much an inside backer who can really fill and hit with authority contributes to the swagger and aura of a team.
