This next game is a must win game for both the Giants and Washington -- both NY/Washington games are. The question is can the Giants beat Washington right now? Both teams are playing a similar kind of game right now. How do you measure them?
At this point, with Robinson AND Gibson, along with a relatively healthy OL I think they have the better ground game. They have a more dynamic receiving corp, as McLaurin is a true number one guy.
I like Jones over Hoenicke but it’s not a wide margin. Hopefully DJ makes an impact with his legs. KT is coming on and Azeez might be back; hopefully that will help the pass rush as Hoenicke can be forced into errors; he has a gunslinger mentality.
Game planning - we might have an edge but that’s predicated on our ability to stop the run. If I were Washington I would just run it down our throats until we proved we can stop them. Both of their backs run downhill. Giants should probably go heavy RPO and let’s see if DJ can do some damage on the ground. It will help A LOT if Bellinger is back and playing at his prior level
Keep their running game in check, pressure Hoenicke effectively and we have a good shot at a W. I know, that could be the recipe for any game…but we need to make Hoenicke sling it, make them one-dimensional. This game rests on the D from my perspective. Let’s get ‘em!
I don't think that Jones has been much better than Henicke since the bye - or that Barkley has been much better than their two running backs combined. McLauren is head and shoulders above any or our wide receivers.

I am struggling with 'greed' a bit here concerning the Giants. I never thought they would play well enough to be in this position coming into this season. The problem is, I always want more. It seems right to appreciate what the team has given me (us) this year without getting sour when they lose a couple of games in a row or even if they don't make the playoffs. That goes against what I have always been as a fan, but I think the old way may not be the best way.
Obviously a bit off-topic, sorry about that.

I don't think this is irrelevant to this discussion at all.
Have to hope they get some guys back on the field, and they collectively get up for this game. They've look awfully flat since coming out of the bye. If not for this WASH game, then for the rematch in DC.

I would argue that it is relevant in that the Giants could easily lose this game which would be three in a row, and a tough loss in the division and conference that could seriously hurt their chances of becoming a playoff team. So if the Giants were to not make the playoffs I would be disappointed, but how disappointed should I really be considering they were dead men walking before the year started.

yes -- both things are irrelevant -- the Giants early season performances have definitely raised expectations; but there is also a reality factor in that this team has some real holes in the roster that the coaches masterfully schemed around, and which are becoming more apparent with McKinney, Jackson, Shepard and Neal taken off the field.
I was encouraged by R. Williams performance in the last game, however. I am appreciating the player development that is taking place. I do think the future will see this team develop well, and rely more on player development through the draft, which is exciting.
But there is also a DNA factor -- in not wanting to see the Giants lose, and wanting to see them perform despite the odds or reality. : ) I can't help that is part of who I am.
Before the McKinney injury and after. Another selfish player derails another season. But they were never as good as their record said. Still stings a lot.
I fully expect them to beat NY. I’m thinking 23-16. Hope I’m wrong. WAS defense has a lot of play makers and their DLine is playing much better. Robinson and Gibson are formidable and McLaurin is one of the best WRs in the league. I think we have the advantage in special teams but they are just getting all the breaks right now.
Commanders offensive line isn’t anything close to Dallas or the Lions. We should be able to get after the QB. We need to see a lot of Jihad ward and kayvon at edge. Iand kayvon. This game is all about containing the running game.
I think McFadden will be limited this game. More snaps going to crowder and smith. Need to keep safeties deep can’t let mclaurin kill you. Need to stuff the run without creeping extra guys in the box. Can’t give heineke 1 Vs 1 downfield.
Offensively I expect a big run game. Getting 2 guards back and neal will be huge. Bellinger might be back as well. Bumps cager down a peg which is perfect. It’ll open the offense up a bit and Barkley getting the extra days rest should help his tired legs. I also expect more breida then what we’ve seen.

Why are people assuming we can win 2 games vs Washington let alone one. They are playing really well right now
I was bummed when I saw the schedule and saw both our games were against them in December, Heineke was always starting by then from either performance or injury. Wentz trade made zero sense and was a total desperation move. Heineke might not get you a SB, but he'll keep you competitive in all games with a solid team like they have. He's a great bridge QB until you find the guy, he just has a pop gun arm, but overcomes it with great anticipation and accuracy. He really only gets in trouble when he tries to push the ball down the field unless its a simple 1 v 1 matchup.
It will come down to both sides run game after watching them a few times this year
Robinson is a house and their 1-2 duo makes Heinecke look like a rock star. Unless we can tackle better and stop their run game , they could easily win. It give heniecke play action and easy throws to some talented WRs
If our run game doesn't get back to the first half of the season form, we won't win this game. They ahve a very good DL and we need to pound them into submission. Getting an early lead (which we struggle with) and the run game going well is the recipe
Going to be a tough one. I thought Dallas would have blown us out too so who knows
their offensive line has been suspect this year, so if we can get pressure going, we got a chance. Both offenses are not exactly juggernauts, so a lot will come down to who wins the complementary football (I cant believe I just used that term). Field position and turnovers and some luck. Washington is a better team than us, but not much better where we can't win if we play well. Heck, we could have won last Thursday against a much better team if our coaches did a better job managing the game (Wink's Coverage on the third and goal from the 15. Going for it at your own 42 etc etc).
will likely have Chase Young back next week (was ready WRT injury yesterday but did not play due to illness). He could be rusty so may not be at the top of his game but is still a concern. He wasn't great last year but he was a problem his rookie year. Hoping the Giants have a few key players back. I have been thinking that the Giants and Washington split their two games. That said, the Commanders (I really dislike that name) are playing well right now. I wish the Giants played them before Wentz got hurt. Having just played on Thursday, I am hoping the extra days of rest and prep will be helpful.
to those two RBs. Teams have been using our agressive blitzing against us and those screen passes have been successful as a result. Tackling is going to be huge in this game, as in most games, but can’t let receivers or backs get extra yardage due to missed tackles. Maybe this is a game to get Collins into, as well, for obvious reasons. He’s also a good tackler around LoS.
WFT has invested a lot of resources in its front 7.
We have made our own investments on the DL and OL. We need to win some of these matchups.
Probably close games and turnovers and who runs the ball the best wins. Hopefully Jones makes a few more plays then the other guy.
All these division tests are great to see where the team is and what needs to be done moving forward. We have not competed favorably along the LOS for a long time. It now gets even harder as WFT is progressing as well.
Overall, I like the that the NFCE is reestablishing its reputation a bit.
can win this game, but Washington should be favored. They are trending n the right direction. We are not. They are the only team to beat the Eagles, and did so on their field.
We absolutely have to pressure Heinicke. If we don't, he and his receivers (McLaurin, Samuel, Dotson, and Brown) will shred our depleted secondary. We also have to stop Gibson and Robinson on short outlet passes in the flat that they can turn into big gains.
On offense, I think we could have a real problem moving the ball, not only in this game but for the rest of the season. Teams know they just have to stop Barkley and Jones from running, and can pretty much ignore our WRs.
We should use Breida and Brightwell more and split Barkley out as a slot WR to get him into space immediately. Jones is likely to be pressured a lot by Washington's formidable DL, so short throws should be favored. Deep drop backs should be limited. Can anybody emerge as a viable threat at WR?

I watched the Falcon game wire to wire. Playing really well is a gross exaggeration. Washington is a middle of the road team with a QB who can be had. The Giants absolutely can win this game. The game pits two extremely average teams against each other very similar to the Falcons vs Washington.
Recipe is simple. Don’t shit the bed and they can win. Play the way they have ever since the line was decimated by injuries and they will lose. Hopefully we have the Thomas/Ben/Gates/Glow/Neal line for this. They will need it.

Good OL - but as usual, it will be a new combination that has never played a game together.
has all the confidence in the world right now. The giants seem to have lost the mojo. If you asked Dj to throw to what Heinecke has, you would feel much better about him. At some point not having quality NFL targets matters. MY only hope on offense is that they have figured out having multiple running back on the field take some pressure off of Saquon. They had something going with that last week.
They need to sweep Washington because a split means Washington most tiebreakers over the Giants
It’s pretty close to a must
Because if we lose and then again to Philly, we will be on a 4 game losing streak
Going into next Washington game
Would be possible to if we then win vs wash, colts and either vikes or a Philly team that may be resting some starters or playing them sparingly
It’s really health. Bellinger, Neal and ojulari need to play
Wouldn’t mind some of jihad snaps being at DT to give some guys a blow. Ojulari will need to hold edge and might be better off as 3rd down guy for the first week or two
Hopeful X and adoree back for second Washington game.
I would consider putting feliciano at OG to run with gates and glow. Not that he is great. But experience may help over ezueda. Maybe BB back too
I rewatched dallas and man … we ran out of horses. Just swimming upstream with no room for error.
The biggest problem I saw was IOL. Jack whatever was (predictably) destroyed but glowinski was fucking terrible. Gates was imo a significant upgrade and overall a plus player. The 2 guards derailed so many plays including some that could have been huge. I know LG has been in flux but glowinski has to g go and gates has to stay. Bredson has been a whipping boy but he was playing pretty well (outside 1 maybe 2 games). If he can play right I would put him there and ezuda at left
That might be the best we can do this year
Obv. Gotta get Neal and belly back and I think the offense will look a lot better
The receivers are what they are but slayton is playing well. He will drop probably 2 passes but he gets open and scared the defense with speed. James is ok. Hodge podge knows where to be.
they played very hard. They are flawed at some positions but seem to get their handful of playmakers involved on both offense and defense very well. They came up big in several big moments in that game.
We are facing them at the wrong time of the season.
With Washington coming into their building playing well.
Seems like some of you have been trying to figure out for a while now how the Giants can get into the playoffs without having to beat any good teams. (This won’t make sense to anyone but me, but you can’t win without winning)
This is the perfect scenario for this team. There will be no backing into the playoffs, if they get there they will have deserve it and it will be a tremendous step going forward.
If not, then they just weren’t good enough and after a good start settled into what they are
Good Lord. Since when did the '22 WFT become the '89 49ers? Yes, they've been playing well lately. Yes, we might lose. Yes, one could argue they're more talented. But making them out to be some juggernaut? Please. Some of y'all are probably afraid of your own shadow.

It's okay for us to be cowards, we don't play.
And no one said juggernaut, but Washington has won 6 of last 7 games and only lost on a last second field goal to Minn during that same time period.
They're playing pretty well at the moment, and safe to say the Giants are not.
They also barely beat the Bears, Colts, Packers, & Falcons. Yes, I'm aware they're hot right now, but we're coming off rest, should have reinforcements, & are at home. And we usually own WFT. I'm not saying it is a gimme win, but some of the posts here are sorta UFB when one takes a step back.

We barely beat everybody we beat too. And expect our reinforcements to be rusty if they make it back for the game.
I like the home field of course and, as a result, like our chances.
And this team will never have a gimme win, not this season.

I find the first and last two sentences in your comments to be over the top. The only person on this thread that referred to them as a juggernaut, or the '89 49ers, is you. Other than that, what people are stating is exactly what you stated after the first sentence and before the last two sentences. I don't think anyone here is afraid of their own shadow. We are mostly facing what we see.
throws at three or four nalls up for grabs a game. He should have 5 or 6 more interceptions than he does. We need to capitalize on those.
100% correct here.
I particularly "liked" the post to Samuel that was 10 yards short, but the ref blocked the GB defender from the INT and it turned into a TD.
Wash has been using the defense, run game, don't turn the ball over plan with great success. The issue is when are Heinecke's
50/50 balls going to come back to haunt them...if ever?
The matchup that scares me is the Commies front 7 against our OL.
That Adoree Jackson injury is huge. We may look back at that as a pivotal mistake in the 2022 season. I am still 100% behind Daboll and think he will emerge as the next great Giants coach but that decision to use Adoree on returns was clearly a mistake even before the injury.
Just happy the season wasn't over Columbus Day.

Obviously a bit off-topic, sorry about that.
I guess this depends on your viewpoint -- when I say must win - that is for a playoff spot
If you think that the Giants should be playing for a draft spot - then winning is not as important
Obviously a bit off-topic, sorry about that.
I don't think this is irrelevant to this discussion at all.
I don't trust Heinecke, but Jones has not played well last two weeks even if you try to argue or introduce a factor/issue with the passcatchers.

PS: Damn it feels good to have a week leading into a big game again
That is a concern as well as McLaurin and Samuel against the secondary.

If you get two "No" answers, the Giants won't be very competitive this Sunday.

We should use Breida and Brightwell more and split Barkley out as a slot WR to get him into space immediately. Jones is likely to be pressured a lot by Washington's formidable DL, so short throws should be favored. Deep drop backs should be limited. Can anybody emerge as a viable threat at WR?
Well said.
They've done a nice job investing very little, and getting good results.

Why are people assuming we can win 2 games vs Washington let alone one. They are playing really well right now

Good OL - but as usual, it will be a new combination that has never played a game together.
Maybe BB back too
The biggest problem I saw was IOL.
If we lose it will be self inflicted, not because Washignton does anything particularly well.
We are facing them at the wrong time of the season.
This means the football gods will smile upon us this week and we win.
Book it.
If not, then they just weren’t good enough and after a good start settled into what they are
If we lose it will be self inflicted, not because Washignton does anything particularly well.
Maybe "afraid" is not quite the right word. But they are playing better than the Giants right now. A lot better.
It's okay for us to be cowards, we don't play.
And no one said juggernaut, but Washington has won 6 of last 7 games and only lost on a last second field goal to Minn during that same time period.
They're playing pretty well at the moment, and safe to say the Giants are not.
