Honest Opinions Wanted

Sy'56 : 11/28/2022 1:17 pm
Hi all-

Someone mentioned (and a few agreed) that in the BBI Game Reviews - they skip the game recap and move right to the player analysis.

To be blunt with myself - I know I am more of a scout that is trying to write. I am not a writer that is trying to scout. Professional journalists are much better at that than I am. Completely aware of that.

Personally - writing the game recap is a time/word suck (give or take 1,200 words) and I could switch the format up if you (and Eric) agree it would be better content for you to read. Here are 3 options and any opinions would be welcomed. I have thick skin - you can be real.

A) Keep it as is.

B) Take away Game Recap - add a bit more to Player Analysis

C) Instead of a Game Recap - write the 3 most influential / turning points of the game. This mayget dicey and cause unnecessary disagreements / fights - but maybe could add more discussion.

I am all ears, thanks.

I vote for Option B

Thanks for your work, Sy!

Whatever is best for you.

I kind of like option 3 first, then 2. Thanks for your contributions, they are greatly appreciated.

To be honest, I also skip the recap. The player analysis is what I'm looking for.
I definitely skip the game recap
Dnew15 : 11/28/2022 1:21 pm : link
I would say most of the regulars here watch the game and kinda know what happened.

I like B and C.

I dig a lot of the podcasts out there that break down from a schematic standpoint the key plays in the game, but I would love from a player development/scouting standpoint what went wrong/correct.
option C or B is best for me

And it's nothing to do with your writing

Your recap is something I genuinely look forward to.
But I have the attention span of a fruit fly, and I also watch all the games.

That said , maybe for those who didn't watch the game, option A may work for them
Since A is abundant anywhere else we might look (good and bad),
Beezer : 11/28/2022 1:21 pm : link
I'd enjoy a combo of B and C, especially if it's something that help YOU, and is clearly in your wheelhouse.
I like to read it all as is
X : 11/28/2022 1:21 pm : link
but if you did change, B & C would be nice!

Thanks for the write-ups!

Love your player analysis, more is definitely better in that regard!

I vote C. Can be flexible for anything you want to point out. A super-heady football play, a position battle that didn't play out as expected ... anything that you think had a big Xs and Os impact on the game could be beneficial. Concise but deep.

I read all your reviews but many times because of time constraints I skip over the game stuff and go right to the position analysis. I do like the studs and duds spot too.

Please.

But frankly anything you write is great!!!

Dankbeerman : 11/28/2022 1:25 pm : link
There are big time plays or sequences in games where things tilt one way or the other. You do need to touch on those moments but no need for the full game recap.
Thanks SY
AG5686 : 11/28/2022 1:25 pm : link
I think you write fairly well, but yes i would like to see more of you see from scouting the tape etc.
I also hope you don't take any of the idotic stuff folks say on your posts seriously at all....they clearly have no idea how fortunate they are to have access to what you deliver on a weekly basis.Game recap and what the other team looks like going forward isn't as much of an interest to me,outside of how it effects our team.I guess teams that are division rivals maybe, but generally speaking I enjoy your analysis of how our guys play more than anything.
It's actually X mas morning every tuesday for me...as i await to hear what you see from the tape.
So thanks again!!
I opt for B or C

Sy, I am curious but is the Giants' organization aware of you and your abilities? Love to see you on their staff as a scout.

While the game recap provides some context, I am generally reading for the player analysis. Regardless of the format, I appreciate your hard work in communicating what you’re seeing as someone who knows the game way more than I do. Thank you for all your time.
B or C

I like the idea of hearing what the influential plays are from a scouts perspective, and what you think contributed to the outcome.

Your contribution here Sy is the very best of BBI...

Thank you for what you do. Whatever you decide will be fine with me.

I would agree with many that I typically race through the game recap to get to your insights. But I would not be in favor of just scrapping it without your key takeaways on the game script itself. Your views for example on the game's key turning points, good/bad decisions, etc. are always of great interest above and beyond simply the player analyses.

So A or C would be my preference...

Keep it as it is.
NBGblue : 11/28/2022 1:30 pm : link
I enjoy the recap (good or bad) and it kind of sets the tone for the comments that follow - like studs & duds.
Sy - your writing is terriffic
gidiefor : Mod : 11/28/2022 1:30 pm : link
but I read those reviews to see what you are saying about the players and player groups. I don't bother reading the game description.

I think discussing key points in the game might be interesting -- but I am much more interested in reading about how the players and the their groups performed

this is particularly true now that we are in a rebuilding phase and there are a ton of unknowns going forward on this team -- there is also the aspect of measuring how the players are developing
I prefer

B, possibly some element of C. I never read the game recap . I want to know opinions on players and positional units

mfjmfj : 11/28/2022 1:33 pm : link
But like many I skim the recap (nothing to do with your writing, but I have seen the game so am really looking for the nuggets of scouting that you drop in the recap).

If the recap is half the work you should skip it or adjust it since it is much less than half the value. Said differently, almost any of could write a decent recap, and almost none of us can add the value of player analysis that you do.
B it is

With a bit of C if it in fact changed the game.

Say X player missed an assignment, but player Z made an exceptional play that covered the mistake. Or worse the play was simply blown.
B or a combo of B/C

You are always a great read!
I honestly go right your Player Analysis and hope that

is consistent with how I saw some of those players, and what I missed that your experienced and better evaluating eye picks up.

You do nice work Sy. Thanks.

But as many noted, I too would like option B if somewhat of a fresh take is needed.

to write the game reviews. However, your expertise is in Player Evaluation. I would focus on that, and anything else you feel you want to comment on, can be included in your wrap up section. If people are honest, that’s what they are interested in, and it would save you some time. Win- Win!
