Honest Opinions Wanted

Sy'56 : 11/28/2022 1:17 pm
Hi all-

Someone mentioned (and a few agreed) that in the BBI Game Reviews - they skip the game recap and move right to the player analysis.

To be blunt with myself - I know I am more of a scout that is trying to write. I am not a writer that is trying to scout. Professional journalists are much better at that than I am. Completely aware of that.

Personally - writing the game recap is a time/word suck (give or take 1,200 words) and I could switch the format up if you (and Eric) agree it would be better content for you to read. Here are 3 options and any opinions would be welcomed. I have thick skin - you can be real.

A) Keep it as is.

B) Take away Game Recap - add a bit more to Player Analysis

C) Instead of a Game Recap - write the 3 most influential / turning points of the game. This mayget dicey and cause unnecessary disagreements / fights - but maybe could add more discussion.

I am all ears, thanks.

Fine with B as well.
Ok, putting my editor hat on (since I write & edit that for a living):

There are a lot of good game recaps online from the beats, and you're a scout, not a beat reporter. Your added value is a scout's perspective. If there's a recap or two you think is/are good, you could link to it/them. You don't need to spend your time on that. The only reason to do it, IMV, is to have it for posterity. If you & Eric think that the content you create today will still be available in some form online in, say 20+ years, the recap may have value. For hard core fans, there's value in being able to see how things looked at the time. (Wouldn't it be great to have game recaps from, say, the hiring of Perkins to the Super Bowl win over Denver?)

B is my favorite option, C is also good.

Another option: Someone else could write the recaps, you could review them and add anything you want to flag. It'd be a good exercise for a young, aspiring writer who wants to build up their resume and get some clips to show.

And as others have stated, it has nothing to do with your writing, I just don't feel the need to read anyone's recap of the game. And the same goes for pivotal moments in the game. It's your analysis of individual performances that I value and appreciate greatly. The more of that, the better!

We watch the game and basically see or read the game recap elsewhere.
Your individual player analysis is much more important because I never look at all 22. I’m sure most of us would agree.
I trust your opinion on our players more than anything else I read or what I see with my own eyes.
Kudos to you and your expert analysis!
Thanks Sy!
aGiantGuy : 11/28/2022 4:41 pm : link
I personally do read the recaps, but if I wanted to prioritize my time and get more out of your writing, I’d choose B and C with a much stronger preference for B if I had to choose 1

game recap/scoring plays, strictly speaking, could be scrapped, but in the 'recap' you include valuable insight as to coaching decisions/approach and player execution foibles and wtf? Those are worth keeping.

As others have said, your analysis, insight, and intelligence are superb: we hang on those words.

Thanks, so much
Thank you, Sy, and
Burt in Alameda : 11/28/2022 4:49 pm : link
as I do not read the game recap, I prefer B,
The entire game analysis is a must read for me
kinard : 11/28/2022 4:50 pm : link
If you were doing away with the game summary, I wonder if you would consider replacing it with a detailed analysis of the coaching and an analysis of the special teams.

I know that you will often reference coaching in your "3 things" section, but that is often more of a "big picture" view rather than coaching decisions made in that particular game.

Its all so valuable that I will be reading regardless. I recognize how much work this all is and I just want to tell you how enjoyable and insightful it all is. Thanks
I guess I'd go modified 'C'
Racer : 11/28/2022 4:51 pm : link
Don't knock your writing style, its always a really solid read and I would never skip to game review. Plenty of nuggets in there where you say it if you see it.

That said, you're saying 'time suck' so that tells me if you could bullet your key points/observations/what-we-might-have-missed by drive and feel like that was a better allocation of time, I'd go that way. I guess this is a modified 'C'

More positional content by all means. I had a person curious about why NYG let Landon Collins go and sent them the link to the reviews of his final full season here and got a 'wow, now I get it - thanks' in response.

I also like the 'few thoughts' on the opponents. Hard to evaluate your team without some context. You were sticking up for the way Carroll and Schneider have worked together even as Russ was showing his level of cooking wouldn't cut it at Papa Johns. Please keep these up.

We are a fortunate fanbase in general in terms of content but we can never say too many times how much your work is appreciated here.

This is Eric's site - And it. may provide value for him to have recaps of games in some regard to look back on years from now.

I’d agree with you that Owner Eric should have major input on removing A, for the reason you cited. And then, Fan Eric might have another selection…
He is the Boss, so there’s that!

I would agree that B often has C included, so an enhanced B makes good sense.

I pick up the important bits of A when reading B. Even if I don't watch the game, I still don't read the recap. I just want to know how everyone played.

I enjoy the recap, in part because you may inject a perspective in the description of a play/moment/ situation that we may not have observed as a fan but gave a scouts view of it.
And , living out of the market and getting fewer Giants feeds without streaming, a game recap is helpful without reading the whole BBI game discussion( sorry Eric) because the wife sees a game non network availability as an opportunity to do something else( she does understand that situation and willing to also not push to do ‘something else’).
A mix of B and C
loafin : 11/28/2022 5:14 pm : link
C doesn’t even have to a key play. What I’m looking for is a play you have looked at in making a decision about a player.

An example would be where Daniel Jones made the best play he could have or missed a wide open receiver.

Another might be where Kayvon or Ward held the edge / or didn’t hold the edge on a running play.

With heartfelt thanks to you for your contributions and to Eric for still the best MFin site on the internet.

section125 : 11/28/2022 5:32 pm : link
go with B & C. We will argue anyway. But that is the best part. We know what happened in the game, so analysis of who was great and who screwed up....

Thanks so much to yourself and Eric for these.
B
Daniel in MI : 11/28/2022 5:45 pm : link
I think any key plays can be picked up during the player/position part.

I’d love more of B. It’s what your key value added is. There’s a game summary posted each week. Just link to it.

But I’d love if you paid more attn to special teams, for example.
B absolutely
islander1 : 11/28/2022 5:46 pm : link
I agree with most of the others, I read these reviews to get your professional insight as a scout.

I could write part A. Most of us could.
I could never write parts B and C.

This board greatly appreciates all of your contributions, but if you could save yourself an hour not doing a big recap, I mean yeah, that's no big loss for us :)
B (and/or C)
jamalduff123 : 11/28/2022 6:09 pm : link
Agree with most others that the recap is not essential. Regardless, thanks for all your contributions to the site-- I always look forward to your posts and reviews!
My humble opinion...
Photoguy : 11/28/2022 6:15 pm : link
let Eric cover the game, and you do the rest.
IMO, Write what you are best at writing about.
Marty in Albany : 11/28/2022 6:16 pm : link
If your opinions/analysis are part of your recap summary, I want to know those opinions. I'm a fan, not a football expert. If I were an expert, I would not be on BBI every day. I watch the games and pretty much know WHAT happened. I highly value your opinions on WHY it happened and what to expect down the road.

This may cause you extra work, but I think your reports would be improved if you put the players' names in bold font so that they would stand out.

I think you do a damn good recap
Wiggy : 11/28/2022 6:21 pm : link
But if you took that energy and added it to additional player analysis it would put your weekly write ups over the top.

B&C

Thanks I enjoy your perspective 👍
I read your entire reviews
GiantTuff1 : 11/28/2022 6:24 pm : link
and would keep it the same but also understand how precious time is. If it’s too much to do that part and most of the community feels it’s expendable then Option C.

Also I enjoy your writing style. I read it because you’re a scout and not a “writer”. I want straight to the point and not flowery BS.

christian : 11/28/2022 6:25 pm : link
There are plenty of resources for what happened — what makes your content special is your ability to comment on why it happened.

If Eric gets traffic and SEO from the recaps, you can probably kill that bird with a few paragraphs and then get to the meat.

Your player reviews and when your explanations of key moments, are top notch.
We all appreciate you Sy....
edavisiii : 11/28/2022 6:31 pm : link
But I'm in the group that goes right to the player analysis. Your summaries are the best as is your draft reports. Quick, concise and to the point. I also write. Mainly about education in papers and educational journals. I think your style is awesome. When I come home after a day at work I don't want to read a novel about the game or the upcoming draft. You always hit the nail on the head!

I skip the game recap
thefan : 11/28/2022 6:48 pm : link
because I watched the game. The few times I've read the game recap is when I wasn't able to watch the game. In the last 15 years I've missed watching about 5 games due to either personal issues or Joe Judge.

So yeah, I read everything but the recap not because of your writing or anything, but because I watched the game and am looking for something beyond a recap when I read your reviews.
C, B, A
Giantimistic : 11/28/2022 6:49 pm : link
I think you should do C next week and then B the following week. Then we can really compare all three options.
C and you write very well

Maybe a play or 2 breakdown would be great which would help us learn the game and why you scouted the way you do.

Thank you the writing and whatever saves you the most time while providing the benefits you do works for me

Absolutely agree with this. Sy, your views on the nuances of what happened during the game are special. Your analysis outweighs any recap.

I thank you for every post you've made. So very appreciated.
