Improving ILB: Which way do we go?

Angel Eyes : 11/28/2022 4:26 pm
I am well aware of the problem that inside linebackers have been for this team, complained about it personally. So it isn't a secret that improvement is warranted.

But what type of personnel would improve the quality of play? All off-ball/inside linebackers have to be good tacklers, but there's variety in scheme. In Wink's blitz-heavy scheme linebackers are often taken off the field on passing downs or they blitz, he leaves covering heavier personnel like tight ends to safeties. Tampa-2 linebackers are supposed to be good in coverage, with the MIKE linebacker dropping as much as 30 yards downfield to stick with a tight end.

Finally, can anything be salvaged from our current linebackers?
you're aware
Dave on the UWS : 11/28/2022 4:27 pm : link
that Beavers was going to start in the middle until he tore his ACL right? Injuries can destroy the best laid plans of mice and men!
who are you asking?
KDavies : 11/28/2022 4:34 pm : link
George?

Be tough to count on beavers Hopefully acl tear was clean and he is good to go in sept Will have a full yr to recover so should be
We obviously need another ilb, possibly 2 if u dont thin micah M can be a valuable option as main back up, sometime starter
Would love to draft one in first 100 picks
We had high hopes for Beavers, but
Bill in UT : 11/28/2022 4:51 pm : link
we haven't seen enough of him to know he can be counted on. I think we need a strong tackler, with good instincts and can read plays well, with an ability to fill holes at the LOS. I haven't watched a ton of CFB, but I like Eichenberg from OSU as a Day 2 pick if he's still around
Probably will need to turn over about half of the current ILBs
NYGgolfer : 11/28/2022 5:09 pm : link
we have on the roster this offseason.

Add a veteran MLB at medium priced dollars in Free Agency, and then follow it up and draft another Beavers-type early on Day 3. And then see how Beavers himself looks as summer camp progresses. If needs to go on IR, then so be it.

Overall investment should be moderate.

Ilb is modest investment compared to salarys of other positions
we need close to a full revamp i guy like J smith should be a vet back up type guy or part time starter we need a couple of tackling machines sorta what a blake M was to us pre acl not great but solid
If a Parsons...
Brown_Hornet : 11/28/2022 5:19 pm : link
...is on the board you take him.
Otherwise, positional value/talent equation likely makes ILB 3rd+ rd.
Injuries and the roster
DavidinBMNY : 11/28/2022 5:19 pm : link
The past few weeks, all of the elevations and moves have been about just fielding a team to play. There wasn't much room, especially given the finances of the team, to "do more".

This week, you can sense a handful of players will be available that were not.

Earlier in the season the PS elevations were more match up based then injury necessity.

This week you may see Jefferson and or Collins back on game day which could help. Even though they are safeties they both at this stage of their career are more hybrid.

Jefferson especially, with his knowledge of Wink, Wink's system etc.
The draft
Joe Beckwith : 11/28/2022 5:19 pm : link
and maybe a FA signing.
I'd love to see the Giants sign Vander Esch or
nyjuggernaut2 : 11/28/2022 5:26 pm : link
Kayzir White. I'm all about pouching good players off divisional opponents. Strengthen an area of need while weakening their roster.
I think it’s an ideal spot for a FA pickup
BillT : 11/28/2022 6:12 pm : link
ILB are low cost players. You can get darn good ones for reasonable dollars. We did that with Blake Martinez. Even an older stop gap type would be ok. Gives you immediate improvement and saves draft capital for more high profile positions like WR.
I think
Gman11 : 11/28/2022 6:40 pm : link
Blake Martinez is available.

Once a Giant, always a Giant
Great topic very interesting

I didn’t see the whole game but have noticed in a few games the play of two players at ND that I think would be great 2-4 round picks for ILB
JD Bertrand and Jack Kiser, both very athletic and fast both seem to hit really hard and to me that is the most important thing we need. Speed hitters at linebacker, run and hit through the ball carried physicality is been missing for so long at the linebacker position. We will not win anything until we get some good linebackers.
Draft ILB on day 2 of draft
Rick in Dallas : 11/28/2022 8:07 pm : link
Really like Jack Campbell of Iowa
Campbell is on my watch list
JerrysKids : 11/28/2022 8:22 pm : link
He is highly rated and has good size 6’5 / 240
Campbell
shocktheworld : 11/28/2022 8:38 pm : link
is one of my fav prospects of this upcoming draft. I think we could get him in Rd. 3
Kids gonna be a stud….his position hurts his draft value, (and helps us)but this dudes a baller. Please let him be a Giant!
Yep… Campbell a thumper

Just what the doctor ordered
Need a draft pick
Dankbeerman : 11/28/2022 8:57 pm : link
and a Vet. Beavers could be something but he could also never be the same again.
Lavonte David
Doubledeuce22 : 11/28/2022 10:33 pm : link
and Tremaine Edmunds are both UFAs.

Pouching?
I'd re-sign Jaylon Smith and have him compete
Anakim : 11/28/2022 10:42 pm : link
But McFadden is a backup, at best and Crowder just flat-out sucks.

Beavers is a wild card, but I'm not relying on a Day-3 pick who never played an NFL snap to start for this team.

David too old

Rather run with a lower cost FA , a fairly high pick and beavers
I think the Giants can improve ILB with a competent vet...
Walker Gillette : 11/28/2022 11:39 pm : link
You draft the best player available but I'd like to see the draft picks go towards the higher impact/higher paid players like a WR or CB. You can get an above average or better ILB for a reasonable sum in FA, but CBs, WRs and DEs cost a ton either in FA or to resign and are better developed while they are cheaper.
Weren't there 2nd round ILB prospects
Spiciest Memelord : 11/29/2022 10:53 am : link
bbi was high on last year? Sigh probably would have gotten injured anyways.

Likely the thinking that wound up with Toney.

Or with Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson, Tee Higgins, Jaylen Waddle, etc. Sometimes you get Andrew Thomas, sometimes Eric Flowers, you do your due diligence and hope for the best!
