NFT: Eaten anything terrific recently? 11/28 edition

Bill in UT : 11/28/2022 5:24 pm
Over the years, I've mostly made osso buco with lamb because I can't find veal shank locally. I ordered some veal from Wild Fork recently and made it last week. Tender and delicious. My recipe includes a gnuddi with it, which I've never made, but I had some leftover butternut squash gnocchi, so I heated that up in some butter.
Saturday, I made an OKC smashburger, which was great, but I don't really see how it's taste is different from a smash bacon cheeseburger.
Sunday, we had some leftover turkey with gravy, but I made a side of dirty rice. I made that many years ago, from a Prudhomme recipe, and didn't love it, but this time I used an ATK recipe, which is really very similar, and loved it. I used Japanese short grain brown rice, which is nutritionally like brown rice, but cooks like white rice, instead of long-grained white rice. Maybe that made a difference? Maybe my tastes have changed?
What about you? Something terrific you made, ordered in, had at a restaurant or friend's house recently? Beverages included

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving Bill.

The chestnut soup was great. As was the whole meal really.

Sunday Mrs. in CT made a great turkey soup with the carcass. It was a perfect meal for a rotten, rainy day.
Stuffing.

Lots of stuffing. Carb Nirvana.
White bread, celery, onions, butter, pork sausage, turkey stock, and Bell's Poultry Seasoning.
Sunday was a really good spicy turkey & Andouille soup. It had all of the gumbo ingredients, except for the roux, and I didn't serve it with any rice. Plan on finishing that off tonight.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
we all went out to eat on thanksgiving

to a nice Mediterranean restaurant that offered the pre fix turkey dinner with all the usual sides. That was fine. The dirty/dry bombay sapphire gin martini was perfect. Glad I have found my perfect drink to order when out.
This is a small thing...

but my son brought some really amazing cheeses to have on Thanksgiving. I will get the names of them and will share later.

I guess most people's week was heavily dotted with turkey. Glad you put yours to good use.

lol, stuffing used to be like Entenmann's cake- I could just sit down with a fork and eat a whole box. I'm just starting to put some winter comfort foods/soups on the upcoming menues.

I'm a big martini fan. Vodka, tho. Haven't had gin in forever, I'll have to give it a go.

I love vodka for bloody Mary’s and vodka club, but the one time I tried a vodka Martini it didn’t work for me, but this was long ago not even sure if it was dry as dirty nor am I sure that even works for vodka. I do know the best tasting martini I ever had was the Bombay gin dry/dirty variety. I’d be curious to see if I like the vodka version.

One could probably spend years just sampling cheeses they're never had before.

I'll make you a deal, you try the vodka, I'll try the gin, and we'll report back next week :) Actually a really dry vodka martini (no vermouth), clean and on the rocks, has become my non-wine drink of choice. Oh, throw in 3 green olives.

Yes old school, don't waste anything. We had enough turkey for the 2 of us to have dinner on Saturday, the kids took the majority of it home with them so it went a long way.
Not as exciting as you Bill,

but since Mrs Section works, I end up making supper a lot.

Did a spaghetti in red clam sauce. Not difficult, but it was good(love clams). Used the Food Network recipe, left out the parsley(useless in my view) but added sliced bella mushrooms. They said to use canned whole tomatoes and the dice up...I just bought diced tomatoes(save a messy step.)

I did think the red sauce was a bit too watery - not sure how to reduce that unless I were to boil off some of the liquid. Wonder if dicing the whole tomatoes contains less liquid then the diced - I did of course drain off.

I am amazed that adding just a tiny bit of crushed red pepper(1/2 teaspoon) adds a touch of zing to the sauce.

I took what I wanted to keep first and offered the kids the rest. I was shocked they left a little over. They did take all the leftover desserts.

It sounds exciting to me. Every dish is an adventure :) I'm with you on parsley, I just don't feel like it brings anything to the party. I'll throw some dried parsley in my spaghetti sauce sometimes. I'll make 2 sauce varieties- for just spaghetti, I'll leave it a little watery. But if I'm doing a parm, I don't like water in the dish so I both boil it down more and add tomato paste to help thicken it and intensify the flavor. And yeah, crushed red pepper goes a long way, if cooking for 2 I usually just add about 1/4 tsp.

Had a stay over in Strausbourg and wound eating at a hole in the wall brasserie. Once I saw Veal Cordon Bleu with spaetzl on the menu I was hooked.

The perfect showpiece for the country- Germanic veal schnitzel cutlets stuffed with French ham and Comte’ cheese (which I’d never had before) was awesome with the pan fried spaetzle and topped with a creamy mushroom gravy. Literally one of the top meals of my life.

Now I’m back home, sick, and the Giants stink again. Sigh.

Martini - vodka or gin
section125 : 11/30/2022 8:04 pm : link
good stuff. Always need olives - sometimes stuffed with blue cheese.

Of course Vodka and Tonic or Gin and Tonic are pretty good, too.

I'll do a wine spritzer with seltzer every once in a while. Mrs in UT has a carbonating machine in the house now.
