I'm worried about our not having a striker on the U.S. side. A draw is an acceptable result for Iran today against our guys who absolutely must win to advance out of the Group stage. I can see Iran dropping back defensively and making us beat them. That's the style I would deploy If I were Carlos Queiroz. We're gonna find out a lot today. This makes the draw against Wales all the more frustrating.

Iran is a team that parks the bus, plays physical, and counters as is. This is going to be like a typical away CONCACAF game for US, just with better field and less bullshit ref (ref today won’t put up with that level of shit - looked him up). So at least they are well experienced in that. It’s gonna take a moment of brilliance from someone and I get the feeling Pulisic is that guy if it happens (he was about 3 inches away from glory against England)
The real question is how aggressive they go on counter with our inability to score and the results in CONCACAF weren’t great against this style of play.
Iran is not the team that played England. Watch their game against Wales to see what to expect--bunker defense and play for the counter. They have a very good coach who understands that their is no glory in trying to play on the front foot against a younger and more athletic team from the US.
Patience is the operative word for the US and some creativity from Berhalter is needed in putting together a lineup. I would give Ferreira a shot for about half and then absent a score put in Reyna. Do not expect Iran to give Pulisic or Weah the room they have had in the first two games to attack, which makes the task for Ferreira more important and also will make set pieces critical. Against England, Pulisic did well for a change with his set pieces but no one on the US could take advantage. US needs McKennie to ge5t a head on the ball.
If the US scores first no matter how "risky" they cannot get too conservative and pull back into a defensive posture and concede the other 2/3rds of the field. If Iran scores first this becomes an almost impossible task for the US as they struggle to score even one goal against major competition much less a team well-schooled in playing with 11 behind the ball. .
If Iran shuts down Pulisic, the US just doesn’t have the attacking talent to break defenses down.
I think that you may be right about the result but do not underestimate the value of McKennie in the box and the skills of Reyna and speed and power of Weah. I see a strong likelihood of a frustrating tie or a 1-0 loss with Iran scoring late on the breakout, but that is simply because after 4 years of qualifying and 2 WC games, I still am waiting to see a legitimate striker particularly against a team focused on playing for the tie. Lots of wings and a very good midfield but no finisher in a crowded box. Still I hope.
but I really hope they get one to go in the first half.
It's really going to feel like it's getting late early if they come out of the half with a gun to their head for 45 minutes.
Of course, if you get one then Iran needs to really start playing ball, but I'd rather be defending and counter-attacking than battling against the clock with the Iranian bus parked in front of the net.
Our set pieces once s strength in the past is now a weakness. Set pieces were where the US would score goals not anymore
Pulisic has not been good at all delivering the ball on corners
In 2 games we have 2 shots on goal. The worst stat in the WC.
Iran is going to bunker down on defense and counter attack.
This is going to be a very difficult game
Is not fouling when Iran wins the ball in our attacking third. Contain, keep them under pressure, and we'll get it back eventually. We are going to be amped up but staying calm in those situations is critical because a foul kills 30-60 seconds, relieves pressure, and gives their D a rest.

I agree with Jeffrey, who posted this at 8 a.m.:
"Against England, Pulisic did well for a change with his set pieces but no one on the US could take advantage."
Still, can't argue that it is no longer the strength it once was ... and can't claim it won't be a difficult game. I feel like Dempsey half an hour ago ... my legs are jumping beneath the desk.
That's in case anyone needs one. I'll put one in for England and Wales as well, even though it doesn't matter what happens in that game. Our guys jus need to handle their own business and win.
packing it in defensively as expected and trying to score on the counterattack. We are dominating the ball and have had a few decent chances off of crosses. I would normally like to see players shoot more from outside the box where it's less crowded, but that could be difficult given how defensively Iran is playing.
lack of a good striker really hurts the U.S. Weah should have let the ball bounce instead of jumping up to hit a weak header the Iranian goalie easily caught. We also continually shoot the ball 20 or more feet over the bar. Good strikers are more composed and finish their chances.

Yeppers. If the U.S. doesn't go on, that has to be a point of emphasis going forward in terms of player development and selection. Weah kicked a field goal basically, lol. Definitely shouldn't have headed that ball either.
how was that not offsides? I don't quite understand the rule
When the pass came into Dest, he was onsides and when he headed it to Pulisic, he was also onsides. It would be offsides if they were the ahead of the final defender.

now has to play more aggressively, which will hopefully create more opportunities for the U.S. I'd like to see Wright and Reyna as substitutions, and maybe a substitute for Pulisic if he's in any way inhibited.
playing with a one goal lead and protecting it. Berhalter has to step out of character and play aggressive.
Holden often has solid observations, but his rant on US in the final third wearing down Iran's back line is silly, as if US is not expending as much or more energy in forcing the pressure. To me that was the difference vs Wales, not that we went into a shell, but that the mids wore down, were tired, allowing Wales to even out the game.
Our MF has outplayed every team we've played, in 1H. Now comes the challenge.

Correct. They need to press their advantage now. This is where their youth can potentially can come back to bite them.
some substitutions. Some of our heavy touches may be because of fatigue. We also ran a lot in the first half as someone noted to create chances, and are running a lot now because Iran has to be more aggressive.

sure what Berhalter is doing. The game is 70 minutes old and we've only made two substitutions, and one of those was for an obvious injury. Our players are tired. Fatigue could easily result in the U.S. conceding a goal.
hate this strategy of just packing it in defensively to protect a 1-0 lead. It's like a "prevent defense" in football when you're only ahead by a touchdown. We're just giving Iran the ball.
Berhalter was very lucky. His decision to play defensively for pretty much the entire second half was stupid. A second goal would have made the fatigue we had at the end irrelevant. But we barely even tried, except on counterattacks.
Do all moments of inaction/play stoppage (injuries, throw-ins, when the goalie is holding the ball, set ups for free kicks, penalty kicks) - does all this get calculated and added into stoppage time at the end?
Didn't fall for Iran's bullshit. This was practically a home game for Iran. Berhalter needs a good smack or three after this game. We've got Holland in four days on Saturday (10 am EST start).
Like by all accounts this game should have been 2-0 before the subs but we weren’t finishing our chances and Iran was looking dangerous with space to work. Of course we took a defensive posture there.
I’ve been critical as hell of him, but this is a young team that’s advancing that’s was unfortunate it didn’t win games 1 and 2. You can def make the argument we outplayed our opponents three times. What more do you want?

Home game - no not really except for closeness. UAE and Gulf States do not like Iran, almost terrified of Iran.
It’s not Gregg’s fault we don’t have a reliable goal scorers that can
They played their hearts out. Second half wasn't pretty but sometimes you just need to dig in to get the result. They were on the attack and fluid when they needed to be, and defended well as a unit to close it out.
Technically, we've seen in the first halves of all three games this group has collective talent that the national team has never had. Such a positive step to get out of the group and get that experience.
Referee called a great game too. Would have been easy to get overwhelmed by the Iran gamesmanship

Well done, USA!
We did a great draw in the referee. Well seasoned from a great league. Let everyone play and did not get fooled by the dives. Surprised Iran was not a bit more chippy in the 2nd half.

You don't know what you're talking about. Dubai is full of Iranians. I lived and worked in the Gulf for many years and know. Bought my furniture from them. The politics gets thrown out the door. Lots of people in the Gulf are of Iranian descent as well (the Al Blooshis for instance).
I know Iran was obviously going to press in the second half but the US didn't seem to keep possession nearly as well in the second half as in the first. Obviously not having Pulisic affects that.

I agree, why change what worked in the first half, even without Pulisic?

Way over stated. You do realize that the last 25 minutes or so including stoppage time, McKennie was out, Pulisic out the entire half, Musah was struggling with poor decisions in his fatigue, so a big chunk of your attacking skills is gone. I thought his move to go 5 in the back was timely.
Moore and Wright are awful, so you're going to go balls to the wall on their backs?
last 10 minutes reminded me of watching the Giants
This was a little similar to Wales: we went balls to the wall 1H, then lost three key players up front, you can't play the same style and expect to execute as you did 1H

I thought the possible red card would have been for a clear non-play on the ball to someone's shins I saw in the stoppage time.
No one seems to like Berhalter's strategy, but once Pulisic and Dest are out, everyone else is too timid with the ball up near and in the box. Maybe Berhalter, knowing his players, tossed a coin in his head and decided they didn't have enough chance to score again but could conceivably defend ... even knowing there would be a lot of injury time. The best chance they had late in stoppage time was just given away (Wright?). It was stressful to watch, and one really good opportunity by Iran -- the header -- was simply missed, but that approach did get the result.

Biggest issue today was again his sub selection. If he’s trying to protect a lead why sub on Wright for Sargent? With exception to the first half, we have had troubles linking up with our striker. Wright does not have the ability to drop deep and link up with our mids like Sargent. Bring on an additional midfielder to clog the midfield, retain more possession and take some pressure off our defense. The Shaq Moore sub experience has got to be over. Two poor performances. Shocked that he is the preferred option over Joe Scally.

See below:
Stoppage Time in Soccer Explained - ( New Window )
This answers some of it for me. What was confusing to me was that the announcers mentioned several times about the US players "milking the clock" with throw-ins, etc. If the time is going to be tacked on to stoppage time, is there any point?

Yep I remember him from the 2021 Champions League Final. Called a perfect match. He does love piling on the extra time though!
going to a back 5 was the right call. Iran still ended up with a couple decent chances, but once Dest and Pulisic were out, we almost had to play defensively and force Iran to make low percentage 25 yard passes into the box.
Ideally, you'd like to have continued to pressure Iran, but had we conceded on a counter, that would have been unacceptable.
Berhalter can be questioned about a lot of things in his tenure here, but this isn't one.

I will defer to your great time there, but I was clearly told every time I went there they had deep fear of Iran. I went there for 5 years on ships around the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula - UAE, Oman, Saudi.

I'd have preferred a 4-4-2 instead. Also, I agree with others that his choice of who he used to sub in this game was a bit questionable. I guess he really doesn't like Reyna? (for Pulisic, that is)
Weah's? It was a smidge and I mean a smidge offside...
Maybe, bust it’s crazy that it hasn’t been shown at all. You’d think it would have been a feature at half time and nothing. I’m sure the video will surface but can’t believe they didn’t show it.
I agree with the comments that explain part of the problem in the 2nd half being the loss of key players. Also there is no surprise that players could not maintain the same level of intensity after 3 games in a week and all the emotion behind the England game.
Outstanding play from many players today starting with the US' best player, Tyler Adams. Pulisic was very good along with the usual suspects in McKennie, Musah, Robinson and Ream and surprisingly strong games I thought from Dest and Sargeant. Continue to be surprised that Reyna cannot get minutes and also wondering what Berhalter sees in Shaq Moore over Yedlin. Acosta should have been given the set piece as he is excellent in that area of the game.
Enjoy this moment USMNT fans. Let's hope that Pulisic and Sargeant are able to go on Saturday. Pulisic could be ribs and Sargeant an ankle.
are questionable, but I see Netherlands was 8th to our 16th. Looking at the ranking points Netherlands is only 40 points higher, while England was 100.
Netherlands is usually a very good team, but I do not remember hearing anything about them leading up to the WC. Can we hang with them well enough to beat them?

Separate that stuff (the political stuff is obviously true). I was in the UAE for over 8 years and am probably going back. There are tons of people of Iranian descent in the GCC, especially Dubai. They pack stadiums whenever an opportunity presents itself. Same applies for when their celebs make the jump over the creek. Spend some time in Dubai with people in the know and you'll see. Lots of people are of Iranian descent but choose not to talk about it besides the Al Balooshis (a Farsi surname).

They showed it once, just after the play about a minute before the half ended - announcers speculated it could go to VAR - did not - but apparently the ref was told it was offside - some sort of automated system that judges the play. But yes, I have never seen it since. I guess they just decided to move on and not dwell on it.
picture of the called off goal was circulating on social media. It was close but the right call. The angle of the TV camera on the replay was deceptive

Rob Stone showed a simulation result at halftime, and you could see that the knee was offside.
They become a serious threat. They are desperately lacking a goal scoring striker. If they find it, they become very close to upper echelon.
Their midfield is young and legit and getting better every year. The team is not as far off anymore as one might think.
Agree, as noted, MF clearly outplayed Wales, Eng, and Iran in first halves. McKennie still not quite in form but had a very good game. Need better depth, though Aronson was solid and then some.
For as many big, athletic (American) football players turned footie players, you'd figure we could come up with a couple of decent strikers of skill and size.
All this w/o Miles Robinson, whom I considered their best CB, though I liked Carter Vickers demeanor, game was not too big for him coming on in WC debut.

I don't believe they are as lethal up front as previous Dutch sides, but Gakpo has emerged with goal in each of the matches. Their biggest name attacker Depay has battled through injuries and lack of playing time at his club Barcelona.
They've been going with a very strong, three man backline (Ake-VVD-de Ligt) allowing them to push their wingbacks (Blind/Dumfires) up to clog the midfield led by the versatile de Jong. They are more than capable of reverting back to their 4-3-3 which they had used earlier in the qualifying cycle.
I worry about our starting midfield going a full 90. Musah was exhausted tonight. McKennie was rightfully subbed off today and will hopefully be ready for a full 90 and sharp come Saturday.
Pulisic will get the headlines, but Tyler Adams is the heart and soul of this team. I can't wait to see him square off against de Jong who will pick his spots advancing forward to create scoring chances for the Dutch.
We will need Dest to continue his strong run of play especially with a three man backline. Should be motivated even further given he chose US over Netherlands and grew up in the Ajax system.
Tough challenge. I'm not sure how we score without Pulisic and Sargent on Saturday. Scoring will be difficult as it is with them. Will need to eke out a 1-0 or 0-0/1-1 PK victory.

It is never the people. Dubai full of Pakistanis too, who seemingly run every business(with Indian peeps too) - nice people.
Used to watch the smugglers in speed boats running the Gulf to and from UAE and Iran. Pistachios one way and cigarettes and booze the other - small boats, 30 footers.

Thanks for the pre-view. This is an extremely young team - the more the experience, the better.(Obviously - duh)
They said an abdominal injury for Pulisic and being checked at hospital. I thought he was kicked/kneed in the gnads at first.
Hope he didn't rupture something.
Everyone jumping on Berhalter. He’s the coach of the team that outplayed England the other day. I get being annoyed about the defensive mindset but hey, he got the USA through a decently tough group.
Didn't fall for Iran's bullshit. This was practically a home game for Iran. Berhalter needs a good smack or three after this game. We've got Holland in four days on Saturday (10 am EST start).
I liked the ref. One of my complaints about soccer is of course the flopping. Neither the US nor Iran did much of it, thankfully, and I thought the ref did a really good job of letting them play through light contact and thus not injecting himself into the game.

The Dutch are football royalty with a great legacy. And they qualified for this WC with ease. They'll be deserving favorites. Our smaller stature players might get exposed on set pieces. We have a shot but it will be an uphill climb.

van Dijk is a monster on the backline for the Dutch and he can be a force on the set pieces you describe.
I've seen him score some great goals in set pieces for Liverpool.

That is how I remember the Dutch - always a top team. Yet, they always seem to not get over the line - close but no cigar.
Tyler Adams was man of the match again
The midfield has played really well. It’s very noticeable that McKennie can only go hard for about 60 to 65 minutes.
Dest ,Robinson,Sargent and Weah played very well
Team has been our best defender … very solid
Finally, the last 2 subs Moore and Wright were very disappointing
Netherlands will be a tough test for our team
Go USA
Is "pelvic contusion" the PG way of saying "cleat to the nads?" Even with this prognosis, is he really listed as questionable (as opposed to OUT) for the Netherlands competition?

I watched the replays, my original thought was he took one to the sack. But I think he caught a knee in front of the area of the point of the hip. It was a pretty hard collision. Wish he had more than three days rest.
After the Wales game, there was some controversy as GB said Reyna still had some muscle tightness (it's true he's been injured a lot) and Reyna denied that. He did get in against England. Against Iran, I think GB just wanted to go with more physical players, even if not as skilled as Reyna.
Reyna's not a #9, so who would he replace as a starter? If Pulisic can't go, perhaps he'd take that spot, keeping Aaronson as a super-sub. Or, Weah could move to striker and Reyna could start on the right where Weah was. But I don't think GB wants to mess with the chemistry more than necessary.
This is success. We can have issues with lack of goals and 2nd half performances, but making the knockout round is the bar for this program right now. Getting another game, having a chance to advance deeper in the tournament- this is what it's all about.
We're underdogs on Saturday, but the Netherlands is a pretty friendly draw, considering we're basically guaranteed to play a group winner (top 8 team)
One of these times we'll make it a little further and things will get really exciting. Could be this year.
Even with the issues we have, we've only allowed 1 goal, zero from open play. And it hasn't been last ditch defending either. We keep the ball pretty well and have been very solid on D - not a lot of huge chances for our opponents.
I do have some concerns about our mentality playing with a lead and obviously putting the ball in the net. But overall, this is the best football playing US team ever, by a wide margin. We are really slick in midfield, dynamic attackers. Just need that #9 ideally that scores pr at least does a ton of holdup/hub stuff.
We should all be pumped though. Good play. Good results.
so many observers, here and in Europe, are banging on about
the Yorkshire Evening Post (Leeds) has Adams' and Aaronson's roles in the win as their #1 story, even over England's win, given that Leeds is their focus. The London papers are also all over Pulisic given that he plays for Chelsea.
Each of them are very good players. World class individually? Not really. Musah just turned 20, so there's still upside there.
Collectively though it's easily the best midfield we've ever had. They've completely bossed huge portions of these games. The way those 3 plus Pulisic and Weah play is a paradigm shift from what we've had in the past. The ball control, ability to beat a man, quickness, creative passing- previously we had 2 guys like that max and a bunch of ball winners.
with Sarge hurt will we turn to Jesus as our savior

Adams was man of the matches for England and Iran. I think you'll see his stock rise. McKennie is already on his way. And Musah is just 20 and Southgate was upset he didn't play for England.
Something incredible is happening in USA's midfield.
I hate to throw cold water on this- but the US has no punch upfront
They need a few more finishers. This is going to cost them against good sides. Remember England scored 6 on Iran and 3 on Wales.
I think Iran and Wales turn out to be a pretty easy group. The USA seems to have the athletes, and look to be good defensively, but the final third is really lacking and will cost them against good teams in the round of 16. For example England would not play the US the same way in the knockout rounds. They would attack more. I believe in the group round they played a pretty conservative match vs the US. They knew that the USA was good defensively but couldn't hurt them offensively, and a draw there was fine.

Nobody thinks we're winning the world cup. We know we'll be very lucky to get past Holland.
I think if Berhalter played the same tactics but had charisma/personality, the fan base would be cheering him now. He suffers because of his demeanor and because he was apparently given the job through inside connections rather than pure merit.
This is the best team we've ever had. The evolution of the sport and it's development has been excellent, with the arrow clearly pointed up. Before, we knew that American keepers were the only ones that were good enough to play well internationally. Then it was the defenders. Now our midfielders are bringing it. The final third is the next step: we need finishers and a striker. This team is young and will get better. The game needs to continue to keep moving forward so we can become complete. No matter what happens going forward, this has been a successful World Cup.

I think the Iranians will park the bus also....
If Iran scores first this becomes an almost impossible task for the US as they struggle to score even one goal against major competition much less a team well-schooled in playing with 11 behind the ball. .
Saturday
The Iran team has been signaling support for the protest movement. They must feel like they have a real purpose and are playing for their people.
It's really going to feel like it's getting late early if they come out of the half with a gun to their head for 45 minutes.
Of course, if you get one then Iran needs to really start playing ball, but I'd rather be defending and counter-attacking than battling against the clock with the Iranian bus parked in front of the net.
Pulisic has not been good at all delivering the ball on corners
In 2 games we have 2 shots on goal. The worst stat in the WC.
Iran is going to bunker down on defense and counter attack.
This is going to be a very difficult game

I agree with Jeffrey, who posted this at 8 a.m.:
"Against England, Pulisic did well for a change with his set pieces but no one on the US could take advantage."
Still, can't argue that it is no longer the strength it once was ... and can't claim it won't be a difficult game. I feel like Dempsey half an hour ago ... my legs are jumping beneath the desk.

Yeppers. If the U.S. doesn't go on, that has to be a point of emphasis going forward in terms of player development and selection. Weah kicked a field goal basically, lol. Definitely shouldn't have headed that ball either.
Looks like he got hit in the nuts
When the pass came into Dest, he was onsides and when he headed it to Pulisic, he was also onsides. It would be offsides if they were the ahead of the final defender.

Roj
Exactly.
Just watching box scores this doesn't seem to be true. ENG-Wales even look almost as one sided as this.
Basically. The technology is uncanny. Gotta time these runs JUST right with this Stark tech shit, lol.
Because they have the tech that gives you automatic instantaneous calls

you go. Nice finish by Pulisic, and a good through ball. Hope Pulisic is OK.

Think so.
All Iran needs is a draw and they're through if the England-Wales score of 2-0 in favor of England holds.
need.
Ramin Rezaeian was trying for an academy award there, lol.
Magic spray.
Yup.
Yeah he can't move.
For the normies I guess.

Agreed. I despised that.
Berhalter was very lucky. His decision to play defensively for pretty much the entire second half was stupid. A second goal would have made the fatigue we had at the end irrelevant. But we barely even tried, except on counterattacks.

Ah yes thought you meant the play in the box
I’ve been critical as hell of him, but this is a young team that’s advancing that’s was unfortunate it didn’t win games 1 and 2. You can def make the argument we outplayed our opponents three times. What more do you want?
Home game - no not really except for closeness. UAE and Gulf States do not like Iran, almost terrified of Iran.
On the bright side, they left a clean sheet on the pitch by holding them at nil!
(I’m getting the lingo down)
It's a bummer they couldn't score vs England. Would've gotten a much better draw.

This was a little similar to Wales: we went balls to the wall 1H, then lost three key players up front, you can't play the same style and expect to execute as you did 1H
+1 Next phase of their evolution as a team.
Berhalter was very lucky. His decision to play defensively for pretty much the entire second half was stupid. A second goal would have made the fatigue we had at the end irrelevant. But we barely even tried, except on counterattacks.

Weah's? It was a smidge and I mean a smidge offside...

This answers some of it for me. What was confusing to me was that the announcers mentioned several times about the US players "milking the clock" with throw-ins, etc. If the time is going to be tacked on to stoppage time, is there any point?
Quote:
Like by all accounts this game should have been 2-0 before the subs but we weren’t finishing our chances and Iran was looking dangerous with space to work. Of course we took a defensive posture there.

Wasn't Sargent injured just before that?

They played their hearts out. Second half wasn't pretty but sometimes you just need to dig in to get the result. They were on the attack and fluid when they needed to be, and defended well as a unit to close it out.

Yep I remember him from the 2021 Champions League Final. Called a perfect match. He does love piling on the extra time though!
Ideally, you'd like to have continued to pressure Iran, but had we conceded on a counter, that would have been unacceptable.
Berhalter can be questioned about a lot of things in his tenure here, but this isn't one.
Their midfield is young and legit and getting better every year. The team is not as far off anymore as one might think.
Yes, this cost us the decision against Wale and almost cost us advancing today. Not a fan of this guy.

I'd have preferred a 4-4-2 instead. Also, I agree with others that his choice of who he used to sub in this game was a bit questionable. I guess he really doesn't like Reyna? (for Pulisic, that is)

It's probably the best midfield I've ever seen for the US - their creative play in tight spaces is a huge difference.
On a separate note, Dest had a fantastic game.

Maybe, bust it’s crazy that it hasn’t been shown at all. You’d think it would have been a feature at half time and nothing. I’m sure the video will surface but can’t believe they didn’t show it.

Rob Stone showed a simulation result at halftime, and you could see that the knee was offside.
Netherlands is usually a very good team, but I do not remember hearing anything about them leading up to the WC. Can we hang with them well enough to beat them?

I'm glad Dempsey pointed out the Shaq Moore stuff is terrible and we've seen it for multiple games.
USA can beat the Netherlands. Stay on Gakpo and get behind Dumfries!

That is how I remember the Dutch - always a top team. Yet, they always seem to not get over the line - close but no cigar.
Tyler Adams was man of the match again
The midfield has played really well. It’s very noticeable that McKennie can only go hard for about 60 to 65 minutes.

Adams was man of the matches for England and Iran. I think you'll see his stock rise. McKennie is already on his way. And Musah is just 20 and Southgate was upset he didn't play for England.
Something incredible is happening in USA's midfield.
