NFT: Songs you despised when you were young

Tom from LI : 11/29/2022 3:29 pm
What are some songs you despised when your were young but actually like now?

I would have to say mine is True by Spandau Ballet (1983).

Back in the day of Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Judas Priest I used hate when this song came on MTV.

Fast forward to today, I kind of like it. I have even gone as far as singing along with it in my car and having it on one of my playlists...

If young Tom only knew what old Tom was up to in his 50's.. he would be so disappointed.

My 17 year old self loathed Sultans of Swing. Somewhere in my 20s, it became and remains an all time favorite

Me too. A lyric like that which just ticks off a series of historic events and people which were current at the time of it's composition immediately dates itself in the years after.

Having a recap list of historical events does not date a song. Talking about putting a dime in a pay phone or learning to play guitar in the summer of '69 or driving my Chevy to the levy on the day the music died is what dates a song. Plus, BJ says in the song that those events had nothing to do with his generation.
I hated Bowie and the whole glam thing

It wasn't until Gene Genie, Rebel Rebel and eventually Young Americans that I finally got hip to the fact that he was a great artist.
I really dislike every Bob Segar song
sb from NYT Forum : 11/29/2022 4:50 pm : link
...but I really freakin' hate Old Time Rock & Roll.

Only reinforced like some Clockwork Orange torture experiment by the MTV video having the Tom Cruise underwear scene throughout.

and it didn't start out that way, I love Soundgarden, but holy shit if there is ever a song that epitomized corporate rock radio overplay from the 90's it is Black Hole Sun.

Sometimes after it came on in the car I'd just turn the radio off and drive in silence out of fear it would come on again. It reminded me of Jason or Michael Myers, I would change stations and it was on every single one or might have been my imagination but sometimes my radio would be off and I swear I'd still hear it.

Fucking great album... easily one of their weakest songs

By Starship, formerly Jefferson Starship formerly Jefferson Airplane.
But honorable mention to Old Time Rock & Roll. Besides the aforementioned MTV overplay, it’s imposed on our ears by every DJ at every wedding, etc.
Also Disco Duck by Rick Dees.
Most of Bob Seger's catalog

It was a favorite of my parents and I couldn't stand it as a kid. Fast forward and I genuinely like a fair bit of it, even if I don't seek it out to listen to (with the exception of Ramblin Gamblin Man, which is a gym staple).
Can we do tv shows too?

I gotta say. I was "younger" in my early 20s, but all those songs I despised on the radio back in 2007-2011 or so sound like musical gold to me when I hear them being played.

Music on the radio (for the last 10 or plus years) irritates me so damn much I cannot listen to a second of it.

Meh. It's only music. Not that important to me like others.

To me Geddy Lee sounds like that 80-year old lady that lives next door and will confiscate your wiffle ball if it lands in her yard.

I thought they were for old fogies. Now I very much appreciate particularly their good later albums and solo work. The early stuff I still don't like as much.

I cannot stand music anymore. I just don't understand how that's someone's main ... thing.

Those people mainly who sit around in 2022 and blast the radio in the summertime and wait for someone else to play their favorite songs .... that they've heard thousands of times, from 40 years ago.
