Most underrated QB in college - Michael Penix Jr.

Mattman : 11/30/2022 11:27 am
What are your guys thoughts on this guy’s pro prospects? He seems to have franchise traits and really isn’t talked about. He should arguably be in the heisman discussion.

Would anyone think about taking him in the late first? He could be a steal there or the 2nd round.
Yes, there are 2-3 other threads about him

Great prospect, but terrible injury history
My buddy has been his qb coach in high school

Still May train him some offseason
I am gonna run it by him
I've watched a few U Wash games this year and

he's looked great to me. I'm not familiar with his injury history, though, and apparently that's an issue.

Thanks, I just saw that other thread. I was going to post this the other day.

Latest I think he goes is the 2nd because of injuries. It’s a risk but the talent is there. And He was healthy this year. If he stays in and stays healthy and has another good year he is going near the top. I just see the guy moving in the pocket and making nfl throws

Bad mechanics, weak arm. Probably available as a 4th rounder or even possibly an UDFA.

But he plays hard
Looks like a very good prospect,
Simms11 : 11/30/2022 11:50 am : link
however injuries will be a concern and we’ve experienced enough injuries over the past 5 years to last a lifetime. If he leaves school, he‘ll most likely be drafted on Day 2.
Link - ( New Window )
I believe Cam Ward...
bw in dc : 11/30/2022 11:55 am : link
is the most underrated QB prospect. Same state as Penix. different school - Washington State.

I'll also toss in Cameron Rising of Utah. Not sure if he will come out, but he was unbelievable against USC and Caleb Williams when Utah beat USC in a shootout. I would argue he outplayed CW, too...
Watched him a lot when he was at IU
BillT : 11/30/2022 12:00 pm : link
In person a couple of times as well. He has talent. Good arm and good mobility. Good size. Certainly, a good college QB. Whether that makes him a legitimate pro prospect with the upside to be a starter if don’t have a clue
Bring him in as an UDFA and see what he has. Do not waste a

no way
jnoble : 11/30/2022 12:19 pm : link
just based on his easily made fun of last name
I definitely think that both Penix
santacruzom : 11/30/2022 12:20 pm : link
and Ward are worthy of consideration, and at least one of them (and probably both) should be available outside of day one.
Cameron Rising is interesting too
santacruzom : 11/30/2022 12:22 pm : link
and his last name is great, but his photo looks like it was taken from a police lineup for a particularly unsavory crime.
The other name to watch due to his ACL
Tony in Tampa : 11/30/2022 12:24 pm : link
is Hendon Hooker of Tenn. He was in the Heisman discussion before the injury. Is he a late one or a two? He turns 25 in Jan, so there's that.
I have a feeling it will be Richardson
Sean : 11/30/2022 12:24 pm : link
That Schoen/Daboll are intrigued on. He might be the perfect high upside QB to pair with Jones at a 2 year contract.
Penix and Hooker

The draft should be interesting to watch this year.
Gotta tell you
joeinpa : 11/30/2022 12:53 pm : link
Really not keen on drafting guys with history of injury. One goal for next season is for the Giants to have less injuries.
I’ve seen
Daniel in MI : 11/30/2022 12:57 pm : link
Penix play at IU and in Washington. He’s accurate as hell. Like Drew Brees accurate. Not sure about how smart he is or the injury history, but he can make all the throws.

I heard he shows up small in cold weather.
Cam Ward has pro tools
JonC : 11/30/2022 1:02 pm : link
Rising is like a combo of Ward and Minshew, two interesting prospects. Penix was dreadful vs UCLA but better vs Oregon, and injury history is a concern. Tough to get a good read on PAC QBs because defense in the conference isn't great.

He won't last to UDFA. His injury history will drop him out of consideration for the first couple of rounds, but he'll go somewhere in rounds 3-5 is my guess.

You're settled on Jones and it will likely prove to be a mistake.

I think you and I exchanged notes a few months ago on Rising. I've gone back and watched more video. My interest has grown. Not sure he's coming out, but would definitely be on the radar as a day two or three prospect.

Real fearlessness to his game.
Rising is a nutter
JonC : 11/30/2022 1:25 pm : link
tough to not really like him, he did indeed give USC hell.

Some of the throws Ward made last week were elite. I’d love to have him in round 2
I don't know how anyone...
bw in dc : 11/30/2022 1:29 pm : link
watches Ward and doesn't see similar playing styles with LJax.

I have to imagine LJax is Ward's idol. It's uncanny the similarities. Same side arm, sling throwing motion and same looseness with ball security.
Ward's got some Steve McNair in him for sure
JonC : 11/30/2022 1:32 pm : link
His movement in and out of the pocket, feel for pressure, finding the open target and zipping the throw to them, all fun to watch. Unlike so many other QBs in this class ...

Says something, too, that he transferred in from a 1-AA program (Incarnate Word) and has adjusted this well to the Power 5 level.

Really good year for Pac12 QBs: Williams, Ward, Rising, Nix, DTR (who could be an interesting late prospect,btw)...

I was intrigued by him and started looking up his stats and watching some videos and I was feeling positive about him as a potential Day 2 pick, but then I came across the interview linked below, which was a real turn off. It wasn't so bad that he kept looking down at "his" notes in order to give canned responses to the questions (not a good look, but not the end of the world); it's what I read in the comments section that had me shaking my head...

Great game plan? Softball questions…guy can’t throw down field….5 yd screens over and over and over. Paul Wulff here we come.

Cam you deserve to be benched and return IRL monies. You do not have what it takes at this level. And no Coach Morris did not have a great game plan. You and Coach Morris are not ready for this level. The results show this. There was a ton of hype around you. Not so much now. I could go on all day about what you need to do better. I don't think you have what it takes. You should be benched starting today.

The interview was from a month ago, so maybe he's improved a bunch....
Cameron Ward interview from October 27 - ( New Window )
I can’t find the tweet with the clip
ajr2456 : 11/30/2022 9:05 pm : link
But there’s one of him throwing 35-40 yards down field toward the sideline from the opposite hash. He’s got the arm to throw downfield
Milton...

I had zero problem with that interview. I don't care if he was referring to notes or whatever was on the sheet. He sounded sincere, calm, and accountable.

Big nothing burger for me...

As I said, it was not a good look, but not the end of the world. It was the comments below the video that was a turnoff. Of course, this was from a month ago, maybe things improved a bunch since then. I don't want a QB who turns every play into a broken play because he can't make up his mind fast enough.
