NFT: Question about Gas Fireplace conversion - propane

DC Gmen Fan : 11/30/2022 10:32 pm
We are in the process of converting our unable-to-use-due-to-chimney-liner-cracks wood fireplace to a gas-insert using propane since we don't have natural gas where I am.

To do so, there will need to be a 400 gallon propane tank stored next to the house. I've never had a propane tank before, but is it generally safe to have it next to the house on the outside of our attached garage? WE really don't have much space elsewhere to put it.
Is it cheaper to convert it and buy the tank and do all the work

Then just to fix the fireplace? Not judging just curious.

And propane tanks are perfectly safe to mount just outside the house.

A little unsightly maybe but safe.

Maybe you can add a run to the back of the house for your bbq.
Yeah the convenience of gas

is what we're after and the efficiency too.
Vented?

If this is ventless think twice about installing it. There is a reason they are banned in Canada.
It’s safe

But there are rules that the installer should know.

Distance from windows etc. see attach link below. Being a garage they may not apply unless it is an attached garage. Read up on it or ask the installer.

I've had a propane tank for my fireplace and stove...

for 23 years with no issues.

The company you rent/buy your propane tank from will safely handle all the connections after your fireplace is installed.

It’s an insert so it’s vented with its own liner
I know this sounds crazy....

but before you move ahead with propane, just LOOK at the electric fireplaces.

Compare the difference in the experience vs the cost.
It might not matter with a relatively

small fireplace, but propane is ridiculously expensive right now. Prices fluctuate of course. Just a consideration.
I would look

I'm thinking of replacing my wood burning stove with

how do you fill a 400 gallon tank?

,
Suburban propane comes out once or twice a season

I did. I've done a lot of research online and in person. Electric just doesn't cut it for me. It would be for aesthetics only - not a whole lot of heat coming out.

I did but we're also looking at moving away from a traditional wood burning to either propane - fueled gas insert or a wood burning insert, both of which come with their own integrated liners.
