OBJ and the cap

mfjmfj : 12/1/2022 9:29 am
It looks like the OBJ sweepstakes (whether you think it is a lottery or a booby prize) is down to Bills, Giants, Cowboys. Assuming he wants more than a rest of the year deal, the Giants are in by far the best cap position to sign him. The Bills are $10MM over the cap next year, the Cowboys have about $2MM of space (which includes rolling over the $7MM they have right now) and the Giants have about $50MM of space (which includes rolling over the $3MM they have in space now - not sure why this shows up that high since I thought they had about $1MM.) Numbers are from Spotrac - one of the five best websites of all time!

It seems to me if we want OBJ, we can have him. I am in favor of making it happen, as long as he is healthy and the downside risk in guaranteed money is limited (say no more then $10MM). We will see. Keep in mind that if we draft a wide receiver in the first round it will cost us between $15-$20MM of guaranteed money. Less if we win the Super Bowl.

Obviously, the reason the Giants have so much more space is that we do not have a starting QB on the roster for next year.
Love OBJ.

Do not want him. You can draft a college WR that will be better and cheaper probably through the 3rd round. If he was healthy and ready to contribute next week, then I would be for it. He will not be ready. I do not want to pay a 30 y/o WR with reduced ability and 2 ACL surgeries $10 mill AAV for two/three years, not for a retooling team.
Yes the Giants are currently in good cap space next year
Jay on the Island : 12/1/2022 9:34 am : link
but much of that will disappear quickly if they extend Jones, Barkley, and Love. They can always create more space by extending Lawrence, Williams, and Jackson but I don' t love the idea of committing a somewhat high cap hit on a 30 year old WR with his injury history.

The signings of Jones, Barkley etc. wouldn't necessarily kill the cap space next year (those deals will have bonus $$'s etc.) but, we do have a ton of players coming off contracts so many positions will need to be signed and or filled.
signing OBJ would be repeating the mistakes of the past

where Mara wants to win so bad we make bad signings.
If OBJ were ready to go tomorrow, I'd consider it.
CT Charlie : 12/1/2022 10:08 am : link
He'd help make the playoffs, which would be a valuable experience for a young team. However, with his uncertain fitness, medium-term health, and high cost, I doubt he'd be worth limiting our ability to sign other players.

I don't think Schoen, Daboll, and Mara will take the risk, either.
No thanks,

Depending on how this season plays out, if Giants make. Decision they can get my keep one of Barkley or Jones, I think they keep Jones

Tough to justify a second contract for a running back when there are so many good ones found n later rounds

OB's camp doing their damnest to create one last significant NFL contract for him, but the knee requires close examination. While still productive before the 2nd ACL, he was no longer the player you remember wearing NYG Blue. Buyer beware.

the mistakes of the past have been letting all the talent walk out the door, not adding it

i'm for him signing here. and we could still add a WR in the draft. but it wont hurt having multiple talented WR on the roster. Isnt that what yall have been complaining about all year??

do you not remember how good OBJ looked in the superbowl??
I think he goes to Dallas
Rjanyg : 12/1/2022 10:43 am : link
I don't like Jerry Jones but he is smart. He knows he has a team that can win it all this year. Adding a healthy OBJ to a team that has Lamb, Gallop, Schultz, Pollard and Elliott with that improving OL is a good investment. Even if he is a decoy it will make that offense very dangerous. Add that their defense is the best in the league and they have a shot the Superbowl.

NYG is not close to being a superbowl team so if OBJ is 100 percent healthy but wants outrageous money, he ain't coming here. We are young and rebuilding and the fact that we are 7-4 at this point of the year with meaningful games is just proof that we have the right GM and the right head coach and coaching staff. We are ahead of schedule and trending up.

I like OBJ and felt he was the most exciting player we have had since Shockey. I think the idea of him coming back would be fun. Just might now be the right move.
I'm OK with it.
mittenedman : 12/1/2022 10:49 am : link
And I'm OK if they decide against it.

Initially I just wanted him for a Playoff run this year, but now it almost makes more sense as a multi-year deal. There is plenty of room here for a veteran inside/outside WR with good hands. He is admittedly a poor man's version of Diggs at this point, but I think he's a good fit in this O.
I'm kind of sure Schoen
Spiciest Memelord : 12/1/2022 10:55 am : link
isn't a bonehead and would spend any of that wonderful precious vast cap space Gettleman set up the Giants with for next year on OBJ.

his worst quality.......
thrunthrublue : 12/1/2022 11:17 am : link
is he has been, over the years, dainty. almost afraid to kick the tires, cause there is a chance he goes right onto IR.

This is a fair take. The reason to sign OBJ is, yes, he can hopefully be a contributor next year, but you can get a similar contribution elsewhere and for less, and probably with less risk.

That risk and money is worth it if he can help this team make some noise down the stretch and maybe in the playoffs. I'm starting to think that is less and less likely a realistic scenario.
He is a #2 WR and that should be the compensation
PatersonPlank : 12/1/2022 11:40 am : link
IF we think he can recover from a 2nd major injury. There is no saying that he will be able to come back completely, or lose another step, as a result. Plus he does have an injury history which needs to be taken into account.

Overall for the right price I'm neutral on this because we need WR help so badly.
Signing this guy long term is absurd
BillT : 12/1/2022 11:49 am : link
At his age coming of two knee surgeries looks like a typical DG move. Overpaying for a guy who used to be good. Golladay/Solder anyone.
You can shove it up my ass if I am wrong...
DefenseWins : 12/1/2022 11:57 am : link
but there is no way in HELL that John Mara will allow OBJ to step on the field as a member of our team ever again.

OBJ got paid the largest contract ever at the time, and he thanked Mara by saying immediately afterwards that he would like to play elsewhere. (paraphrasing).

As an owner, you just do not forget that.
Beckham makes no sense
Sean : 12/1/2022 12:00 pm : link
Both Barkley & Shepard who he is close with may not be back next year. Jones may not be back next year.

I look at this visit as more of an olive branch on both sides than anything else. Get some closure and be on good terms going forward. I think both sides probably realized they screwed up.

Reason to franchise saquon unless
He may not want it but then u trade him for more than a 3rd rd comp ( might be a 4th rd comp depending on salary)

I actually look at it as a PR move for the Giants. Showing the fans they are "trying" to do whatever it takes to win this year knowing we have a depleted WR roster. There WOULD BE fans asking why the Giants will not even talk to him when they know the QB has little talent to throw to. They are just going through the motions.

Based on games played.

A certain base salary + so much for every game you suit up.
NO OBJ

Please no OBJ he is a great talent but can also destroy a locker room soon as things don't go his way. IMO crazy to sign him.

AcesUp : 12/1/2022 1:28 pm : link
Trust your docs. Green light from there? If you can get him for WR2 money I wouldn't write it off. The Giants need about 2-3 strong WRs, odds are against all coming through the draft and an ascending UFA comes with additional commitment and cost. He'd be an alpha here this year out of necessity but longterm, but provided you trust his, which is implicit with this FO if they're signing him, he's likely a veteran complimentary guy.

That said, I doubt he signs for Gallup money even with the injuries, especially with an all-in Bills and Dallas trying to make SB pushes.
