Ben spoke to league sources who expect the DT market to explode this offseason. One source projects the market to blow past Leonard Williams’ $21M annually. Great news for Dexter Lawrence…

Great for Dexter not so great for us. The Giants have a lot of cap space for 2023 but a lot of holes and many contracts going bye bye. We could create a lot more space by doing new deals with AJ, DL, AT and basically letting Barkley leave (which is the smartest play here) and either keeping Jones short term or acquiring a QB elsewhere.
IMV, Lawrence is a must sign

Yep. If the DT market is going to explode then it should make Williams very valuable to other teams in a trade. Sign Lawrence and deal Williams
Lawrence and the Giants will both have a decision to make.
Big Blue Blogger : 12/2/2022 10:00 am : link
He's a bargain in 2023 on the fifth-year option. That gives the team some leverage in negotiations, if Schoen is willing to take on an additional year of injury risk. Lawrence will have to decide whether to take the security of a long-term deal or bet on himself to stay healthy and repeat his 2022 performance.

I'm not sure which players would drive the projected "explosion" of the DT market. Da'Ron Payne will get rich as a UFA. Who are the others? Javon Hargrave is playing great, but he'll be on the wrong side of 30. If the explosion happens in 2023, it will be in re-signings: Lawrence, Q.Williams, Oliver, Simmons are all 2024 UFAs who will get big offers from their current teams. Now, one or two of them could let the others set the market with huge extensions, then ride that tide to an even bigger extension or a massive UFA deal. That's a gamble, though, with some elements of the "Prisoner's Dilemma".

Why would you make a strength a weakness? you can have both..

You have cap space going forward and a lot of this team is going to be draft picks next year
If they are able to go with a rookie QB

I expect they extend Williams and keep extend a few other players on the D side (including Dex). If they are keeping Jones things get tougher imv.

When Wink came in he told both Williams and Dex he is doing something wrong if they are not both Pro Bowlers. They may not be quite that but both have certainly been plus players imv. Not so sure they look to spin off Williams but that is depending on other factors.

Having two DT @ over $20M/per each is simply not good resource allocation. Having both would be great. It’s just not very likely. The cap situation also gets a bit exaggerated here. Sure it looks like the next couple of years there is a bunch of space. But they will have a ton of roster spots to fill. Most of the players they signed this past offseason were one year deals. They have a ton of FAs after this season. That space will be eaten up very quickly just to fill the roster

Based on what I've seen this week at practice, Giants should have Azeez Ojulari, Daniel Bellinger, Evan Neal, Fabian Moreau, Jon Feliciano and Tony Jefferson all back in some capacity for biggest December game in six years vs. Washington on Sunday.

WR Darius Slayton (illness), OL Shane Lemieux (toe), OL Josh Ezeudu (neck) and CB Adoree' Jackson (knee) not spotted at practice. Safe to assume Lemieux, Ezeudu and Jackson will be ruled out.

Daboll said Slayton is participating in meetings and he's "hopeful" for Sunday.
Consensus among beats seems: Ojulari and Jefferson will be activated.
Big Blue Blogger : 12/2/2022 2:19 pm : link
Meanwhile, Bredeson gets another week to heal.

For all the commotion about Feliciano and Gates, the real decisions about the interior offensive line come when Bredeson and Ezeudu are available. Lemieux might re-enter the picture as well. For now, Coach Johnson will try to muddle through with what he has. Gates-Feliciano-Glowinski may be sub-optimal, but it's a reasonable deployment of the available assets.

I think Tony Jefferson is an underrated addition. While he obviously lacks McKinney's range, he's not completely baked and he is a literal coach on the field in Martindale's defense. The secondary should gradually strengthen down the stretch , with Jefferson and Moreau likely back this week, Jackson getting closer, and McKinney still a December possibility. Even Aaron Robinson hasn't been ruled out altogether.

The key, as always, is to keep getting healthier and not suffer any further attrition. Although the awful WRs, ILBs, and rotational DL will continue to set this team's ceiling, they could be a tough out if the positive injury trend continues for a few weeks.
Varnett would be a nice addition

How I expect the roster to shake out over the next 48 hours:

• Activated from IR: OLB Azeez Ojulari, S Tony Jefferson

• P-squad elevation: TE Nick Vannett

• Inactives: WR David Sills, TE Tanner Hudson, OL Shane Lemieux, OL Josh Ezeudu, OLB Elerson Smith, CB Adoree' Jackson
If they are ready to elevate Vannett and make Hudson inactive...
Big Blue Blogger : 12/2/2022 5:30 pm : link
...I think it makes more sense to sign Vannett to the roster and waive Hudson. Since Hudson isn't vested, the money they would save by cutting him would cover Vannett's salary (after applying the Minimum Salary Benefit). Assuming Hudson cleared waivers, he could replace one of the lower-priority practice squad members. If he were claimed, it would be no great loss.
