Time to shine Sunday is the biggest game of quarterback Daniel Jones’ four-year career. It’s fortuitous for Jones that Washington is the opponent. Jones has a 4-1 record in five career starts against Washington. Jones had a 4-16 record over a 20-game stretch early in his career, with all four of the wins coming against Washington. Jones has nine touchdown passes in the games against the Commanders, which is four more than his next highest total against any opponent. Jones has been particularly effective against Washington with his legs. He had seven carries for 74 yards in a 20-19 win over Washington in the 2020 season and nine carries for 95 yards and a touchdown in a 30-29 loss to Washington last season. Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka said defenses have been scheming to deter Jones from keeping the ball on zone reads lately. Jones was averaging 8.3 carries for 49 yards in the first seven games of the season compared to 5.3 carries for 27 yards in the past four games. He hasn’t been wearing the brace on his left knee in practice this week that had been a fixture since Week 5. The Commanders have a stout run defense, but they were exploited by zone reads by Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota (six carries for 49 yards) last week. Sunday is shaping up as a perfect opportunity to unleash Jones as a runner. |
I agree. Jones needs to lead the team to the playoffs. I don’t care how it looks, he needs to make enough plays for this team to get in the tournament.
With a longer break and getting some guys back, I expect the Giants to win this week, and I don't think it will be particularly close.
The Giants absolutely NEED this win. It is chance to see him perform in a big meaningful gam, that is winnable. I think it shows something for him and the offense to come with a win in this one.
I agree, but this is the game to stop the bleeding. They lose this and they are staring down the barrel of 7-8 before the Indy game. Jones HAS to step up. No excuses.

It was a close game until Dallas WRs started snatching Dax Prescott ducks out of the air with their iron eagle talons away from our street FA DBs.
2021 he was 1-1
W vs PHI = 19/31, 202, 1 td, 30 yards rushing, 94rtg, 53 qbr
L vs WSH = 22/32, 249, 1 td, 95 yards rushing, 1 td, 90 qbrtg, 68 qbr (dex offsides)
2020 he was 3-1
W vs. PHI = 21/28, 244 passing, 64 rushing, 1 rtd, 101 rtg, 89 qbr
W vs. WSH = 23/34, 212, 1 td, 94 rtg, 47 qbr
L vs. PHI (Engram drop) = 20/30, 187, 2 tds, 1 int, 92 rushing, 92 rtg, 73 qbr
W vs. WSH = 12/19, 112, 1 td, 1 int, 74 rushing, 75 rtg, 83 qbr
add all that up and you are at 8 total touchdowns and just 1 int in the 6 games.
his record in the 4 games vs. PHI/WSH is going to define his season. 2-2 or better and they are probably going to playoffs and he has a chance to really show he can win when it matters. anything worse and it will obviously be a big disappointment.
I didn't post his rookie year because that's long enough ago an all different coaching staffs so who knows how relevant it is, but he did also go 2-1 in that year and he had 2 of his career 300 yard games. He had 7 tds and 3 ints in those 3 games so his career record vs both is 6-3.
I think we know who Daniel Jones is by now .
It is big from the standpoint of Jones needs to show a lot more in these last 6 games than he has shown to date. A big game against Washington means he needs another big game against Philly, and then another big game against Washington again.
A mediocre game against Washington likely seals his fate with the Giants. So yes, these last 6 games are his last gasp and it starts this week.

Sean, no disrespect intended to he idea that this is a huge game for the Giants and Jones.
But he and the Giants have had some nice wins this year, and relative success against Washington and Philly the last two seasons. Was it last year or the year before with the game about to get out of control vs Philly he took them 98 yards for a score; followed by what should have been a game winning drive sans a drop by Engram
I just have the feeling that even if the Giants win Sunday, and Jones plays a similar game to Baltimore, Tennessee and Green Bay, it won’t be enough to satisfy his detractors
I think we know who Daniel Jones is by now .
My view, too.

That’s fair, Joe. But, the team started 7-2 and really should make the playoffs. This game is the biggest game since 2016.
Jones has had some nice wins, but it feels bigger now.

Agree with all that

This exactly. We know exactly what a Regular Jones game looks like. He does it almost every week. The chances are very high that it's exactly what he's going to do on Sunday.
Whether we win or lose will be based on whether we can run, who scores TDs in tbe red zone, random stuff like bounces, FG misses, etc. Same as its been all year.
Is there a chance he lights it up? Sure - he usually does it 1 or 2 times per year. Is there a chance he stinks it up. Sure, but given how conservative our offense is and his track record of limiting turnovers this year that's not likely either

I have a similar feeling. If Jones gets nothing done in this game yet the Giants win 6-3, the Jones apologists will simply say "He won the big game!" If the Giants offense played the same way and they lost 9-6, they would say "Can't win with this Oline and WRs."
At some point we all need to agree to evaluate Jones on how Jones plays, not give him credits for win and hold him blameless in losses.
Is this the most important in terms of whether to give him a big long term contract? No. We know who he is. He’s had individual very good games before - hopefully he has another one on Sunday —and followed them up with mediocre and sub-mediocre spans of play.
a concise, accurate summary

Agree with this. I don't think you can base your entire opinion of a guy who has been inconsistent across three years as a starter based on how he does in a 6 game window. This idea that the majority of Jones history in the NFL has to be forgotten to fairly evaluate him is odd to the say the least.
I can't think of another example of a QB who was consistently mediocre across three years in the league who people on BBI would say "Well it's too early to pass any kind of judgment yet."

The problem with using Philly as the ultimate measuring stick is that its possible our line gets dominated. In that case its not really fair because very few / no QBs could look good. A game like Washington, and even game with lots of the line, is I agree a very good measure
They need to put the offense on their backs for sure.
I'm more concerned with the play of the OL/TE group. If they play well that will help the both Jones and the WR's out.

The Giants are getting back more than a handful of starters on Sunday. That should help in what will be a playoff-like game for them.
#Giants #Commanders
So, it's an opportunity for Jones to make chicken salad.
However, Jones isn't in that stage of quarterback development anymore and should be showing his value even on a roster lacking quality targets. I personally don't see Jones as a difference maker type of quarterback that can shoulder an offense. I think he is a decent quarterback with some good skills. I am ready to move on from Jones, however, if Daboll and Schoen plan to retain him, I won't throw a fit.
Let's remember, the Giants WRs will be playing with a QB who would be the backup on most other teams in the league.

Jones will be Jones. He will make some throws and will make some plays with his legs. He will also be late and miss some easy throws and not see potential big plays right in front of him .

+2 ... he might not see a better situation on a rebuilding team.

I think a lot of people are right in this wheelhouse. Jones is soon to potentially become expensive and I agree that as of right now I would not be paying those dollars. I am open to seeing how these last 6 play out.
In addition to the Jones evaluation the as important evaluation imv is the OL and front 7 and we face 4 more teams in the NFCE to measure where they stand. I have yet to see a NFCE team stand at the end in four decades of watching. Rarely has a team stood at the end without this support unless one things the different between Mahomes two SB appearances was he just had a off day.
Agree, Iv'e been a DJ supported since day one and still am, but he has to win this game. Even if no run game and he has to take the team on his back by making big plays him self. It is on him.

He wouldn't backup bbi QB cargo cultist's messianiac savior figures Trubisky, Wilson, Glennon, Mayfield, Willis and Taylor.
ASk Phil Simms that question.
We've been arguing what to do about QB for 2-3 years. What would be different about 5 more months.
Receivers DJ won't see open, receivers DJ will see open but not throw to, and receivers DJ throws to inaccurately
If Jones throws for 350 / 4 TDs / no turnovers and we lose 41-38, then Jones played great
If we win 9-3 and Jones throws for 120 with 2 turnovers then he played awful.
Of course in all likelihood he'll throw for 185 yards and 1 TD and the score of the game will be something like 20-16, similar to most of our games this year.

Judging by how the Giants fared without him last season, and the 7-4 record this season, a case could be made that he s pretty much been doing that for the past 20+ games

Well if he doesn't beat Washington - after losing two in a row -- beating Philly may be irrelevant

How would that be irrelevant? They’d be 8-5 and fully in control of their own destiny under that scenario.
Fair or not, that resency bias will play a huge part on where he plays and how much he makes next year.
If the Giants split the next 6 games, and Jones plays well, he's making a bunch of money for himself.

Some things are like clockwork...DJ will throw for 175 yards, run for 25 more, and throw or rush for a TD like he does every game. The score will be 21-17 and who knows who will win. If the Giants win, it'll be all about how great DJ played, if we lose, it'll be about how Saquon didn't do enough, and the OLine, WRs, and possibly the defense sucked.
I'm falling calling this Sunday's game the biggest of his career. It's just sad that, as usual, he will have to play it with a subpar supporting cast, as has been the case literally his entire career.

At least it should allow Jones to really differentiate himself from all those subpar players in the eyes of Schoen & Daboll.
And then Jones (and Saquon) make a lot more money and the Giants will have to grow the cast subpar players on the roster to account for that.
Does that cheer you up?
It may be make or break with the Giants, but I believe no matter what happens he will be in the NFL next year and he will be playing. Mara was right, the kid has not been given the weapons to succeed in NY and I can see a team with an aging QB picking him up right away if the Giants let him walk.
