BBI Giants-Commanders Preview (Including Injury Status)

FYI...

Preview: Washington Commanders at New York Giants, December 4, 2022 - ( New Window )
Great preview that lays out all the major issues
M.S. : 12/2/2022 3:40 pm : link

For both teams.

I’m torn about this game. On the one hand, I never thought Giants would be playing a meaningful game this season come December, so this is really a special treat!

On the other hand, we haven’t really seen for at least a month the team that actually made this game meaningful in the first place. And we are still missing practically our entire starting secondary, we have a perpetual diminishing WR unit, and a Saquon Barkley that is running into more and more quicksand as the season winds down.

Translation: Sunday will indeed feel like a “play-off” game. I’m just hoping our team plays well and doesn’t experience a beat-down by a team that right now is on a different trajectory than the Men in Blue. A win and maybe the Giants flip that trajectory.
Really well done Eric

I am mostly in line with how you see football and you really hit on just about everything. From Jax, Neal/Bellinger to pointing out Phillips as 6th OT (I missed this benefit).

W/o the running game magnifies all the flaws. 3rd down conversions also have been lacking but maybe with a better effort running it takes some pressure off Jones. I understand he's missing some throws but the pressure to have to hit these throws is magnified with all the pressure these last few games have presented.

You nailed the D side as well imv.
spot on Eric

preview.

I think Washington wins pretty easily. We simply have too many holes on both sides of the ball.

Teams know that stopping Jones and Barkley from running is the way to beat the Giants. Washington should be able to do so as well, especially given their defensive front. As you note, “Washington is 10th against the pass and 8th against the run. They are also 10th in points allowed.” Our lack of receiving targets in the passing game means that teams can commit even more players to stop the run, which is one reason why Barkley has been seeing a lot of eight man boxes. I don’t see Bellinger making that much of a difference in his first game back, and even at this best, he’s a possession TE. He doesn’t have the speed to beat defenders down the seam.

On defense, we have to pressure Heinicke or he and his receivers will tear apart our depleted secondary. I also expect Washington to exploit the continued inability of our LBs to cover the middle of the field, especially on crossing routes.

Washington as you note is averaging “over 121 yards per game rushing and lead the NFL in time of possession.” We “are 26th against the run, allowing almost 139 yards per game. Worse, the Giants are allowing 5.2 yards per rushing attempt, one of the worst figures in the League.”

I think Washington will just wear us down over the course of the game.
This game is basically their season

Lose, and you’d have to go 2-0 vs the Redskins (in DC) and beat the Colts. Very unlikely they win one of the other 3 games (Philly twice and at Minnesota).
I am looking at this game through

Two lenses:

The first is strictly about the overall team and what this game means to the 2022 season. Win this game and we are moving forward with a serious opportunity to make the playoffs.
If we beat Washington that locks us into at least 8 wins (my summer prediction was 8-9). This game also feels like an old school game against Washington- 1984, 1986, 1989, 1990, 06 etc .

The other lens is Daniel Jones centric. Jones has had some of his better games against Washington and I have an odd feeling that continues this week.

Washington has been winning games but very little of it has been impressive and even less had to do with their QB. The Giants winning or losing this will week will have a ton to do with the play of Jones. Jones needs to hit receivers accurately and quickly ( go back to the way the offense looked in a few drives this year- quick passes, multi threat looks from rpo/run fake looks, threats of Barkley or Jones running etc..

Daniel Jones can change the narrative of this season, his possible career here ( or elsewhere if the decision here has already been made) and honestly the NFC playoff picture.

I believe Jones will get multiple TD's ( pass and run) and will put on a performance similar to his Washington game last season.

Giants 30 Wash 21

you re spot on, the Commies win in a blow out! The Giants defense has no answer forthe Commies run game and Heiniecke has the best game of his career with 4 td passes. Commies 42 - Giants 6.
I'm not sanguine about this one

Guys.. we are just too beat up and Washington did a hell of a job against Philly
I am hoping for a win

But think we have too many injuries, no receivers.

I think Jones will play well given what he has to work with.

Barkley , not sure how he will play. Is he going to fall down on contact or is he going to run through contact? I think his play will be the key to the game.

If I had to bet I would pick Washington, as a Giant fan I pick the Giants.
Maybe the Giants win Sunday?
M.S. : 12/3/2022 7:22 am : link

But how are they going to score against a top tier defense? So many WRs for the Giants are out; this is Bellinger's first game back (along with Evan Neal) and Saquon Barkley isn't the same player who ravaged the Titans in Week One. Throw in the loss of our two best defensive backs (Xavier McKinney / Adoree Jackson), as well as an extremely thin D-Line after Leonard Williams / Dexter Lawrence and it looks like the Giants are going into battle short a brigade or two.

Sorry jvm, the Giants scoring 30 points is an oxymoron
Honestly, this doesn’t look good for us
5BowlsSoon : 12/3/2022 1:35 pm : link
They beat Philly while we lost to Detroit. How can one feel good? And like Eric said- when X and Adoree went down, so did Wink’s defensive game plan.

I really don’t expect anything from Olujari…just hoping he can leave the game healthy and play next week.

No doubt we need Barkley and Jones to rise up like they did when we were winning. Can they? I don’t know, but can’t wait to find out.

They lost to Detroit to....
I am guessing not a lot of people
nygiants16 : 12/3/2022 1:41 pm : link
have actually watched the Commanders, Heinecki has been ok..7 tds 5 ints, he turns the ball over, takes a lot of chances..

They got lucky last week to pull out that game, everyone falling in love with thwir atreak but they havnt been some dominant team..

They beat rhe Bears, Packers, Colts(barely), eagles and Falcolns..Hardly a tough schedule
I think we win only if, somehow, we rack up 2-3 more timely turnovers
CT Charlie : 12/3/2022 10:26 pm : link
than they do. Losing McKinney, Jackson, and Robinson has changed us from being more or less competitive to more or less not.
There is virtually nothing left of the Giants

Even with getting some players back we’re a shell of what we were. Missing four of our top six DBs, a couple of LB, a couple of DLs, starting like our eighth different OL, our starting TE hasn’t seen the field in more than a month and missing our top four or five WR. Come on man.
